Given that the guy who paid the bribes has been convicted and is in prison it's hard to see how the guy who accepted the bribes can be found not guilty. Then again, I'm sure the Japanese "justice" system will come up with some way to rationalise it.

The article says that the mayor "overwhelmingly" won re-election, even though he was the only candidate. Why bother holding an election at all in that case? It shows how useless the opposition parties are when they cannot even find someone to stand against a convicted criminal.

So the guy that offered the bribe goes to jail for 4 years and the other guy gets a suspended sentence?

one gets 4 years, the other was acquitted. sounds a little suspicious. the guy in prison should be released immediately if the mayor was acquitted...you need at least two people for a bribe to take place.

Since I don't have any guilty feelings, I will continue to do the mayor's job at full strength," he added.

That in there lies the problem.  You took a bribe and don't even feel guilty about doing it.

exactly.  The election in this case is a waste of taxpayers' money.  Just let the guy continue.

The alleged bribe-giver was arrested for other crime, and was persuaded to make a false testimony of the bribery to set up the Mayer, in return for lenient sentence. This is what the district court found based on evidence, and the court awarded the Mayer not guilty verdict. There is no evidence of bribery except the false testimony.
