Interesting, Europe, China, Korea an Japan, all beholden to Russian energy.

That's scary.

Unfortunately, Japan rejected China's one belt and one road program 3 years ago, otherwise Japan would be very different now, better of course.

I think a peace treaty and long term cooperation should come first before you literally divert money to a hostile.

If Russia was as rich as China we’d be trouble.

I wouldn't like to be dependent on Russia. Too many risks. Look at Europe.

Not good for Australia at all if this plan transpires. Although I suspect it will be some time before it does.

Need to look for new markets.

Maybe he is happy too early!

I like these layman's comments XD

You'd be surprised but it was a Japanese idea to lay gas pipe from Russia to Japan some 3 years ago.

While the gas line to Koreas seems feasible, laying gas pipe on the sea bottom with high seismic activity is a big risk and no one simple has such technology. If Japan would want to get gas from the Korean pipes, they'll have to scratch their heads, not Russia.

Even if there was no lack of technology problem, Russia probably learnt from the EU case, and wouldn't singlehandedly build such pipes. More so, if these pipes are to connect Korea and Japan.

Shikisai, your 3 years idea is 7 years too late. If Moon was born 10 years earlier, it might be possible, but right now, questionable.

If you missed the boat, you missed it, as simple as that.

It took Vietnam 27 years from $6.2 billion in 1989 to $202 billion in 2016, no one paid for it. For NK, it will take only 10 years to reach your $7 trillion goal, admitted that I didn't check your arithmetic.

Read the politics behind Moon's words.

He wants to unite with NK and do not want Russia to impose anything on that union. By calling on Russia's favor he is trying to prevent China from influencing the united Korea.

He does Not want Japan to get the gas. He just wants Japan to "help pay for it".

NK and SK has Coal which NK sells to China. But optional energy source other than coal or oil makes sense for both NK and SK that needs energy to grow their industrial capabilities and energy needs without nuclear.

K.J. is preparing to step down and let the South Koreans to takeover the entire north Korea !? Keep dreaming Mr.Moon !

Moon doesn't seem to know that Russia is Japan's next door neighbor.  Putin has proposed a gas pipe directly to Japan through the Nothern Territories.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

was I informed that SK already gets gas from Russia?

Japan should pass. It would be better for Japan to continue to restart the nuclear reactors and invest in wind and solar power. Japan also invest in Fire Ice( Methane hydrate). Both Korea and Russia are totally unreliable.

@Akie

Shikisai, your 3 years idea is 7 years too late. If Moon was born 10 years earlier, it might be possible, but right now, questionable.

You should probably re-read my comment, you have some attention problems.

First of all, the idea is not mine, but even more important-its not Moon's either. The idea to build pipelines from Russia existed for decades and was lobbied mostly by Niigata and Hokkaido-coz in both cases these prefectures would become more important and maybe create some new industries. 3 years ago it was again on the agenda proposed by the Japanese side. But from the point of feasibility its a pie in the sky.

Meanwhile, building gas pipeline from Russia to South Korea was not possible previously due to NK regime, the problem that might be resolved sometime soon. If the NK and SK governments build enough trust by then, they can run it as a joint project. Obviously, there are economical reasons why such project is proposed by Moon-that is, pipe gas is cheaper than LNG.

Will Russia do it or not is a different question-they just recently built a huge PL to China, pumping most Siberian gas in that direction.
