The abductee issue is the only part Japan can play in the negotiation.

Trump said he promised Abe during a meeting in Washington last week that he would work hard for the return of Japanese abducted by North Korea.

Never before, and probably never again, will I see the words Trump and "work hard" used in the same sentence!

Abe better not hold his breath!

Abe is using a hell of a lot of political capital in getting these leaders to push this issue for him. He must be betting on a positive outcome that would boost his popularity and get him over the cronyism scandals!

The Moon has set on this issue, get over it.

Japan so petulant. The world is on the doorstep of denuclearizing NK and you bark like a chihuahua about this 4 decades old problem you did nothing about when it happened

And then he will tells K.J. : Don't take it seriously! Just for gesturing!

-11 ( +2 / -13 )

This is a mistranslation.

Moon said his administration would raise the issue when it is appropriate in the future, but NOT during his summit.

Japanese abductee is the least of Moon's concerns, and Moon actually believes NK's accounts of Japanese abductees, that all are accounted for.

They’ve said they died. How are they going to say they’re really alive now?

8 ( +11 / -3 )

Is Abe going to raise the issue of 5.4 million Korean abducted by Japan???

-5 ( +11 / -16 )

Do they really want to resolve this issue? If they do...what else can Japan play the victim on with NK?

-9 ( +5 / -14 )

@melon...

Brilliant comment sir!

Good for Moon, glad to see cooperation here.

10 ( +13 / -3 )

Er...isn’t the meeting about ending the Korean War? Nothing to do with japan.

-7 ( +6 / -13 )

3 points.

Point 1

Japan isn't pushing the abductee issue as the only issue. To suggest so is beyond ridiculous.

The world is on the doorstep of denuclearizing NK and you bark like a chihuahua about this 4 decades old problem you did nothing about when it happened

But the successive people in power over the years have been constantly active, since at least 1991, when is when I arrived here and started watching and reading the news. Do you even live here or are your eyes and ears defective? Or perhaps you think the MSDF, coastguard and/or police should have magically predicted the abductions in advance and had all of their members line up along the entire Japanese coastline?

Point 2

As mentioned on this site the other day, several South Koreans, and people of other nationalities, have been abducted too. Moon is doing the right thing by them, as showing responsibility as a member of the triple alliance. Without reciprocal cooperation by all members, the alliance loses meaning.

Point 3

North Korea can score some brownie points by making sincere efforts by trying to resolve the issue as a matter of goodwill. It would definitely be beneficial in re-establishing diplomatic relations that would help the North Korean shake off it's pariah image and lead to economic recovery.

It always is a good news when both JP/SK governments (politicians) interaction still exists. So many negative issues have passed and it's time to go forward to the future and not stagnate with past events. BTW, about the abducted JP citizens, even if it's a little late I think first to finish the armistice to start the real peace treaty between them. The major conditions should be ASAP but the rest will take time to be realized. Hope those abducted people will be released within the time they are still alived or it will be too late, I know that in NK there are thousands of them from whole world, especially from South Korea.

11 ( +11 / -0 )

If Moon has offered to bring it up, then fine... it will provide a bit of a buffer than Japan just bringing it up and angering NK. It's the best that can be hoped for if the issue is to be mentioned at all. In return, Japan needs to avoid addressing said issue when it comes to talks of denuclearization. It's got to be good enough for now, with bilateral meetings later.

Japan isn't pushing the abductee issue as the only issue.

Actually they are

Do you even live here or are your eyes and ears defective?

24 years and counting, ears are fine

Or perhaps you think the MSDF, coastguard and/or police should have magically predicted the abductions in advance and had all of their members line up along the entire Japanese coastline?

No, I think they should have looked for them years ago instead of using Trump's meeting to denuclearize NK for this non-issue that nobody but Japan cares about

Your points 2 and 3 are absurd and have nothing to do with Japan, who is raising this silly issue that nobody else cares about

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

Japan isn't pushing the abductee issue as the only issue.

Actually they are

You seriously believe such fluff? The people of Japan don't care that nuclear missiles can be fired at their country?

Hang on, I'll just ask my co-workers... um, apparently you're wrong. I'm shocked.

Your points 2 and 3 are absurd and have nothing to do with Japan, who is raising this silly issue that nobody else cares about

Both Trump and Moon have acknowledged the issue publicly as mentioned on this website. Try scrolling up and reading the article again, assuming you did in the first place.

I do not hear reports about Abe wanting to talk to Trump about missiles, Trump is handling that part fine with Japan the Chihuahua on the sideline

Nothing to do with Japan which was your point

Sincerely hope that one day soon all families of the abducted and families separated the 38th parallel on the peninsula are able to find comfort in the arms of their loved ones. And for those who have passed - I hope the families will find solace in the memories of their loved ones.

I hear that the mountain where the North Koreans conducted five nuclear tests has collapsed, and THAT'S why Kim has decided no more. It wasn't his choice. The thing that is worrying is that radioactive stuff could leak. And worse, I hear that the area could erupt (are there volcanoes?) That place is close to the Russian and Chinese borders. Vladivostok isn't too far and neither is Japan. Creepy.

I do not hear reports about Abe wanting to talk to Trump about missiles

So you seriously think the issue isn't addressed? What else do you assume due to not being privy to it? The mind boggles thinking how absurd this line of "reasoning" is.

Nothing to do with Japan which was your point

See the above comment.

Either you lack imagination or are so focused on badmouthing Japan that you've lost touch with reality.

Just like your reasoning that these are happening and nobody reports it

I have lived here 24 year why badmouth? You do not need "imagination" to see what is happening. Japan wants to bring up a silly issue nobody cares about when more important ones are out there
