Tiny little Kim rattling the cage yet again, trying to stay relevant. Let's hope he is doing all this due to internal pressure in the hermit kingdom - and that the sick, evil regime is under threat. We can all only hope.

Was it a biplane ?

7 ( +11 / -4 )

The frequency of the launches talks about some degree of desperation from NK, if we were talking about a country with rational leadership this would mean it would be by now much more open to negotiations and cooperation with other countries.

Unfortunately that is not the case here, and this is dangerous.

15 ( +16 / -1 )

The south better launch tests also tobshow their readiness

5 ( +10 / -5 )

Straight out of the old NK playbook, in a few months they will be all "wanting to talk" in order to remove sanctions.

When Japanese pm popularity is down, NK pops up in the news. Japanese people scare easy.

Japanese people scare easy.

Risks of nuclear war scare most 'reasonable' people, but seem to delight the warmongers, especially the warmongers backing the warmongering North Korea/China/Russia/Iran bloc.

Come on guys Get It Over With while the world is in a WAR mood.

The cruise missile looks very much like the Iranian Ya Ali cruise missile. Same wing shape, same arrangement of three flight control surfaces at the rear instead of the cruciform flight controls of Chinese cruise missiles and Tomahawks Block I, II and III. Same scoop shaped under fuselage air intake. Ya Ali is a distinct looking cruise missile associated with the IRGC.

I wonder what would happen if a North Korean missile malfunctions and unintentionally and genuinely crashes in South Korean or Japanese territory. It could happen.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

With this insane and unprecedented escalation with N.Korea and flying that plane so close to SK and the Chinese aggression towards Taiwan, I just worry that they might be planning something sinister with the Chinese by taking advantage of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

When Japanese pm popularity is down, NK pops up in the news.

That is very very true. And its not something recent either.

The North Korean launches, part of its record-breaking run of weapons tests this year, were seen as an attempt by Kim to acquire a more intimidating arsenal to pressure its rivals to accept his country as a legitimate nuclear state and lift economic sanctions.

"Were seen" are about the vaugest words the writer could have used.

So there's no chance Kim is doing this to distract attention from Putin's desperate bid to stay in power in spite of losing his ill thought war with Ukraine?

Maybe, but I would not rule it out. These "strongmen" both are obsessed with showing the US they are in control.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

In addition to the fact that it was the South who fired artillery for ten minutes, there's a lot of documented info which clearly demonstrates why NK is firing missiles etc.

One reason is that more bombs were dropped on the North than in the entire Pacific theater of WWII and twenty percent of its population wiped out in the Korean war, which itself occurred as a result of those Koreans who had collaborated with Japan during the Japanese colonization of Korea being restored to power in the South in 1945, as well as the massacre of tens of thousands of South Koreans in 1948 on Jeju do by US trained ROK forces.

Time for the US to station medium range misses armed with nukes in S. Korea like we have in Europe.

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

Don't pay attention to him, he's the Fatty..

Time for the US to station medium range misses armed with nukes in S. Korea like we have in Europe.

Time for this, time for that... And that's why we're in a nuclear missile race, we're going straight to extinction...

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

The North Koreans are not about to forget the horrors of the past as many in the west do.

Unfortunately, this point is emphasized daily to allow the regime to stay in control of the population and the US certainly continues to live up to that stereotype in the present.

China doesn’t seem to conduct artillery drills on its border with North Korea so why do the US and South Korea?

It might be better to engage than be belligerent as we know that belligerency has not achieved anything for many decades!

2 ( +5 / -3 )

I wonder what would happen if a North Korean missile malfunctions and unintentionally and genuinely crashes in South Korean or Japanese territory. It could happen.

The spooks would be jumping for joy! It would be an intelligence bonanza.

In the 1950s the US had a 24 ton nuclear armed intercontinental cruise missile the size of an F/A-18 called SM-62 Snark. They were prone to malfunctioning and disappearing during test launches. It was so common that the waters off the US east coast were ruefully called "Snark infested waters". A 1956 launch of the most recent model was supposed to fly out from Florida to Puerto Rico and back. These missiles were notionally recoverable by landing on water. Instead of following the intended flight plan it ended up flying south. It failed to respond to commands to bring it back on course and later failed to command destruct when it was too far off course to be recoverable. I was last seen off the coast of Venezuela and eventually ran out of fuel over the Amazon! A Brazilian farmer found pieces of it in the early 1980s.

Interesting that China stays silent on this, abstain on Russia vote in the UN, supports Iran in UN votes AND still think China stands for peace. LOL

3 ( +6 / -3 )

That’s amazing since North Korean pilots fly only an average of 20 minutes a year due to fuel shortages and budget constraints

2 ( +3 / -1 )

that's why we're in a nuclear missile race, we're going straight to extinction...

no, it’s because all the regimes that you support have crazy leaders who are constantly threatening other nations with their nuclear weapons

0 ( +2 / -2 )

China doesn’t seem to conduct artillery drills on its border with North Korea so why do the US and South Korea?

Because China is busy doing military drills on their border with Taiwan

2 ( +4 / -2 )

"The North Korean moves suggest it would keep up a provocative run of weapons tests designed to bolster its nuclear capability for now. Some experts say North Korea would eventually want the United States and others to accept it as a nuclear state, lifting economic sanctions and making other concessions."

Am I missing something in the logic here? NK thinks that aggressive flexing will get the US to ease sanctions and acknowledge them as a nuclear power? in what world would that ever happen? why would the US do that? That's like applauding a kid for punching their brother in the face, then giving them some cake

1 ( +2 / -1 )

The North Koreans are not about to forget the horrors of the past as many in the west do

The west has not forgotten which nation refused to allow UN sponsored national elections in 1947, choosing instead to create a separate communist government out of the Soviet occupation zone in the north, nor has the west forgotten that after all the suffering of WWII it was the very same North Koreans who invaded the south and created the very horrors you now whine about.

When DPRK invaded the south, the south had no combat air force and no armor. It's army was small and the US had by then withdrawn its own post war occupation force, leaving only 500 military instructors to help the ROK build a national army. The north meanwhile was armed to the teeth with over 2000 modern Soviet tanks and the latest versions of the MiG-15, many of which were flown by WWII combat experienced Soviet pilots. DPRK got what was coming to them for invading the south. Maybe that is the lesson DPRK ought to learn, don't invade your neighbor.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

China doesn’t seem to conduct artillery drills on its border with North Korea so why do the US and South Korea?

Excuse me but it is the DPRK conducting missile firing drills and flying their aircraft close to the South Korean border unannounced.

Time for the US to station medium range misses armed with nukes in S. Korea like we have in Europe.

The US has no medium ranged missiles in Europe, nuclear or conventional. The INF treaty banned from Europe, US and Russia land based missiles with a range greater than 499 km and less than 5000 km. That forced the US to remove Pershing I, Pershing II and GLCM-N, the ground launched nuclear armed version of Tomahawk. China was not a signatory to INF and was not bound by its limits, which is why they have so many different IRBMs and land based cruise missiles.

INF is now dead but the US has not yet brought missiles like these into service. The Army is buying a ground based version of TACTOM and will soon have an IRBM with a hypersonic glide vehicle as the warhead, both entering service probably next year. The replacement for ATACMS will have a range greater than 499 km and have a new guidance system designed to target moving targets like ships at sea.

$10 bucks says Putin asked Chubs over there to try and create some distractions from Eastern Europe.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Kim is miscalculating. He thinks that the US is so distracted by Ukraine that it’s incapable of dealing with his antiquated, hungry army.

He very well may do something stupid that instigates a conflict. He will recognize and regret his mistake, but by then it will be too late.

The west has not forgotten which nation refused to allow UN sponsored national elections in 1947..

These are local/regional matters, the west via there UN or directly cannot interfere wherever they please, now going by the same logic NK or say China should directly intervene in western regional/local matters, right.

nor has the west forgotten that after all the suffering of WWII it was the very same North Koreans who invaded the south and created the very horrors you now whine about.

This is nothing compared the western intervention in NK, which wiped out 20% of the population, and this horror is very subtly never mentioned.

Dear Leader is jealous of the world attention Moscoe Midget is getting.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

The North Koreans are flying within their own air space, are they not?

Why do they need permission?

And there are historians that claim that the South Koreans were antagonists in initiating the war.

Still, that hardly matters as 4 days after the US started carpet bombing anything and everything north of the 38th parallel leading to where we are today…

-6 ( +2 / -8 )

Thanks Iran, you’ll get WWIII started, one way or another

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Lil Kim seems to be doing this for the benefit of people forced to watch TV news at bus stations everywhere.

Just tests. Nothing to be worried about.

Moscoe Midget! LOL Brilliant!

Oh god, the muppet show and propaganda continues.

Let them waste their money with all these pointless missile launches, but dont show any attention to this now embarrassing attempt to scare people.

Like the fat bully in the playground, he will soon get bored and take up a new pastime.

I recommend bungy jumping , but not tied to any structure

Part of huge money Unification Church exploited from Japanese seem to flow to also North Korea.

And, LDP, Partner of Unification Church, uses North Korea threat to increase military budget.

The west has not forgotten which nation refused to allow UN sponsored national elections in 1947

The majority of South Koreans also oppposed the UN elections, which may have led to the US-installed Rhee Syngman to start massacreing ROK citizens who were not viewed as pro-US, starting with Jeju do in 1948 and then continuing with the massive Bodo League incident, which was based on the fact that the majority of ROK citizens were anti-US in 1950.

N Korea fires another missile, flies warplanes near S Korea:

The world does not know the exact living condition of people in the hermit kingdom. They could be just eking out a living with Kim's burning away enormous sum of money in missile launchings.

Is he paranoiac, extremely?

These are local/regional matters, the west via there UN or directly cannot interfere wherever they please,

They can and do directly interfere whenever they please, but yes they shouldn't

Kim is miscalculating

Attempting to portray you actually have any knowledge of kims calculation abilities is amusing.

I majored in this region at University for my undergrad studies. I wrote a paper (pre-digital. Sadly long gone) on N.Korea’s nuclear ambitions in 89. I’ve lived in the region since 90 and studied this since 94.

So I am at least semi-qualified to speculate. (At least as much as the average Joe Blow who cannot seem to navigate the US Embassy web page on entry rules. Cough cough)

But I’m glad you’re amused. Given your record for accuracy, it gives me faith that I’m on the right track.

This is nothing compared the western intervention in NK, which wiped out 20% of the population, and this horror is very subtly never mentioned.

How about mentioning that it was North Korea with significant help from the USSR and later from PRC that invaded the barely armed South Korea and nearly crushed it. If the US and other UN partners had not fought back under UN command then all of Korea would be under the rule of the Kim family. Fortunately that did not happen, but it appears some retrogrades on this site would have preferred that outcome.

Moreover, that the DPRK exists today is only because of the massive intervention of the PLA. were it not for Chinese intervention, the penininsula would have been reunited as the N. Korean Army had been destroyed as a fighting force.

Hey Kim, You can catch more bees with honey than vinegar! Try promoting some positive humanitarian effort and see if attitudes change about you.

Seriously, all you warmongers and yesmen, ever heard of Nobel prize for peace?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

No one mentions why China felt compelled to intervene.

Also, if they hadn't intervened, yes it is true the whole peninsula would have been united, under the leadership of US-installed Rhee Syngman, who massacred tens of thousands (those which have been confirmed by exhumed skeletons; the actual number is likely ithe hundreds of thousands and possibly even surpasses a million) of SOUTH KOREAN citizens because they were viewed as not being pro-US.

Seems to me that Mr. Kim is wasting a lot of money with all these missiles flying off to nowhere. The money could be better spent raising the living standards of the poor saps living in North Korea.

One less missile.

Fighto!

Tiny little Kim rattling the cage yet again, trying to stay relevant.

By the way - Kim Jong-un is a respectful lider of independent state.

unlike South Korea or Japan

Ironic, isn't it?

The world does not know the exact living condition of people in the hermit kingdom.

I would not say that. Many nations have normal diplomatic relations with DPRK. They host tourism as crazy as that sounds (there is a major tourist area on the beach adjacent the international airport at Wonsan). Many nations maintain some legal trade relations as not everything they do is prohibited. You might be surprised to discover how many watch movements for famous international brands like Swatch are manufactured in DPRK. here are analysts who study DPRK in great detail. Start reading a website called 38 North. Here's the link:

This is what happens when a spoiled brat gets expensive soldier toys. The best strategy is to ignore his tantrums. If there's a miscalculation and one of his toys hits either South Korea or Japan, North Korea is toast.

Unfortunately, this may set off a chain of events worldwide. It's been a while since the last big event.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

The best strategy is to ignore his tantrums.

The best strategy is well armed patience. Possess sufficient military power such that DPRK never gets any ideas they could prevail against the ROK and US alliance, and be patient. Historically hereditary dictatorships do not last past the third generation. Kim Jong Un and his Krypt Keeper sister are that third generation. The chances of there being a fourth generation of Kims ruling DPRK are slim. He won't live forever and the horrific casualties the ROK would suffer by a resumption of hostilities are probably not worth any possible gain. The Kims and the CCP both probably will not last forever and many of us may still be alive for their demise. People always want action, which can make patience a tough sell but patience is essential.
