Good call.

Israelis should not be welcomed at an event which seeks to promote peace.

3 ( +25 / -22 )

It's been several months but no sign of cease fire, well done Nagasaki!

3 ( +22 / -19 )

An article about Israel / Palestine and the atomic bombings of Japan? I’m sure this comments section will be lovely

-16 ( +7 / -23 )

At last a decision of morality and honour , and feel proud citizens of Nagasaki.

Restores some hope in humanity lacking in Israel

2 ( +20 / -18 )

So where are all the usual "Japan is a vassal state of the US" posters?

-1 ( +17 / -18 )

Should have invited them and then publicly shamed them in front of everyone.

-12 ( +9 / -21 )

Paragraph 2. Obviously, Mr. Suzuki is worried that the solemn ceremony would be disrupted by protests or even violence. He his using caution to be sure the ceremony is about Nagasaki. This seems to be a judicious action.

2 ( +11 / -9 )

Good for Nagasaki. Hiroshima is Kishida's constituency.

4 ( +17 / -13 )

Nagasaki's call to make.

Good to see fascist Russia and puppet state Belarus have not received invites from BOTH the Nagasaki and Hiroshima ceremonies for the 3rd consecutive year. Warmongers and killers of innocent civilians not welcome.

9 ( +18 / -9 )

It would be like inviting Hitler to a memorial held at Auschwitz

0 ( +15 / -15 )

Not inviting the only democracy in the Middle East is a slap in the face to Israel, which has the right to defend its people against terrorists.

-3 ( +16 / -19 )

It would be like inviting Hitler to a memorial held at Auschwitz

The current Israel government used atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945? My history teachers owe me a refund

-15 ( +8 / -23 )

Good!

-2 ( +11 / -13 )

Incoming sanctions from daddy USA

-18 ( +5 / -23 )

Israel was attacked and Hamas knew how Israel would respond. They wanted Israel to respond as it has because they knew they'd get bad press for it. Hamas didn't care about those living on the Gaza Strip, they are just pawns in the game. So here we go, Hamas is getting their way because a feeble minded Mayor in Nagasaki is falling for it hook-line-and-sinker.

6 ( +19 / -13 )

Gotta love how every single comment here is insta-downvoted no matter the stance xDDDDDDDDDDD

-24 ( +4 / -28 )

It's as if Nagasaki thinks it has some kind of moral superiority. smh

-6 ( +12 / -18 )

Tariff rate just hit 20% on Champon Ramen

Incoming sanctions from daddy USA

-14 ( +2 / -16 )

Doesn't make any sense and is bare of any logic, to exclude someone from peace and A-bomb talks, meetings or memorials when you exactly want that, more peace and less A-bombs from that someone. One city inviting but another not, that's just adding up to show that there is not even a minimum of logical thinking and coordination involved.

5 ( +14 / -9 )

If yer gonna commit genocide and brazenly murder civilian women and kiddies can't really expect to be invited to a peace event.

0 ( +12 / -12 )

Sounds like the mayor of Nagasaki hasn't read How to Win Friends and Influence People.

-8 ( +6 / -14 )

It’s like attacking a country and then being outraged when they fight back.

Who woulda’ thought ?

7 ( +14 / -7 )

@Sven Asai Exactly what you said. It's like having peace talks but refusing to invite the people you are fighting. That's the opposite of seeking peace. It's just showboating.

2 ( +8 / -6 )

Good to see Nagasaki is not following in the despicable path of Hiroshima and the IOC, which have employed racial discrimination against Russians.

-11 ( +5 / -16 )

The mayor of Nagasaki is just following the current herd. The Iranians, Hamas and Hezbollah will applaud.

-2 ( +11 / -13 )

Nice to see the mayor of Nagasaki has some moral integrity! Inviting a genocidal regime to attend the memorial about another genocide is ludicrous!

Well done Mr Suzuki!

-5 ( +9 / -14 )

Mayor Suzuki evidently has an exaggerated sense of self-importance.

-8 ( +9 / -17 )

Sanjinosebleed

Inviting a genocidal regime to attend the memorial about another genocide is ludicrous!

Recommend you look up the definition of genocide. Applying it to either is ignorant to say the least.

1 ( +8 / -7 )

It's more about this mayor than anything else. He's full of himself.

-7 ( +8 / -15 )

Nice to see the mayor of Nagasaki has some moral integrity! Inviting a genocidal regime to attend the memorial about another genocide is ludicrous!

So the atomic bombs were genocide now? Is everything genocide to you? Is the genocide in the room with you now?

-2 ( +9 / -11 )

Protesters gonna protest anyway

-6 ( +3 / -9 )

It is a wrong decision not to invite Israel, the victim of a terrible terrorist attack. Israel is still trying to rescue its citizens taken hostage by Hamas since the first day of the attack in October last year. Hamas should liberate the Israelis hostages and stop using the innocent Palestinians people as human shields.

-3 ( +7 / -10 )

Yeah Roberto, you are a bit late to the cause....Hamas has repeatedly offered to release all the hostages if Israel withdraws its military.

And the largest release of hostages was by Hamas, who NEGOTIATED with Israel.

Over 100 released.

Now, maybe turn your attention to the thousands and thousands of Palestinian hostages Israel holds in "administrative detention "

-1 ( +9 / -10 )

Hamas has repeatedly offered to release all the hostages if Israel withdraws its military.

Who cares about what Hamas has to offer. The only desired goal is for all of Hamas to be killed so that they can't make any more "offers", or launch rockets, or slaughter civilians like on 10/7, or generally be the primarily impediment to Palestinians achieving peace and prosperity.

-5 ( +6 / -11 )

Has the Russian ambassodor been invited?

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

With the demise of Hamas' political leader, says a lot about security in Iran. Seems there is validity in the saying "you can run but you can't hide." Iranian security personnel might be missing a few numbers shortly.

Not inviting the only democracy in the Middle East is a slap in the face to Israel, which has the right to defend its people against terrorists.

Nobody denies that Israel has the right to defend itself. But Israel's operation in Gaza is producing a disproportionate amount of civilian casualties and damage. Which why much of the world has turned against them. And there are many Jews everywhere including in Israel who object to Netanyahu's methods.

Hamas took advantage of Netanyahu's hardline policies, knowing they could carry out a terrorist attack and scurry back into Gaza forcing Israel to kill many civilians in the process of trying to eliminate them. As as they calculated, the world would see Israel as being in the wrong.

Exactly, this is why we have a problem with Israel. They don't care about how many they kill

3 ( +9 / -6 )

Good !!!!

2 ( +9 / -7 )

Excellent!!!!...

-5 ( +8 / -13 )

Hamas and Hesbolah attacked Israel and kidnaped and killed innocent people, and then hided out in school, hospitals and general population. People only blame Israel for retaliating, but they totally forgot why and how the did that.

The hipocrisy and callousnes of some posters blaming the Israel is ridiculous.

-6 ( +7 / -13 )

Bibi and his war mongers have taken Israel to a whole new lever of Anarchy, Hypocrisy, and well set on a course to self destruct.

Israel has ben hijacked by blood thirst war criminal and it is about to drag it's allies with it.

It is beginning to look like Nazi Germany in the early 40's.

1 ( +8 / -7 )

Well done Nagasaki, War criminals and children murderers shall never be rewarded.

-2 ( +8 / -10 )

"Takeshi Yamakawa, an 87-year-old survivor of the Nagasaki bombing, said he is furious over Israel's actions but still wants all countries -- whether it be Israel, a de facto nuclear state, Russia or Belarus -- to be invited to the ceremony to "show them how cruel things happened in Nagasaki 79 years ago."

It seems Takeshi Yamakawa San is better in decision making than the mayor of the city of Nagasaki.

-6 ( +3 / -9 )

Ignorance about the Palestinian situation since 1948 reigns supreme on this forum.

Hamas is one of a long line of resistance groups fighting an oppressive Israeli occupation.

Dont take my word for it.

Read every UN resolution and every esteemed author, including Israeli Jews, and you'll see the same conclusion.

Might want to discard IDF and zionist rubbish though.

1 ( +8 / -7 )

Things don't need to be and usually never is 100% black or white. Hamas definitely did something horrible, and Israel had the right to defend itself, but the amount of justified damage passed around day 1. At this time it's more like evil vs evil with a huge number of innocent stuck between.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

Well done Japanese. Invite the main heroes of this celebration, the USA, and that will be enough.

-9 ( +5 / -14 )

JJEToday 03:29 pm JST

Important to keep in mind the American political class hosted an indicted war criminal in their senate, gave him a standing ovation. But insist the Russians are pariahs.

The Russians are actually led by an indicted war criminal. Slightly worse.

2 ( +9 / -7 )

nikToday 03:31 pm JST

Well done Japanese. Invite the main heroes of this celebration, the USA, and that will be enough.

If you think you are ever going to get more than a statement of regret, you are welcome to try. I suspect given the fact your are Russian you actually don't give two figs who attends, though, as long as you can make hay out of it.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

Well done Japanese. Invite the main heroes of this celebration, the USA, and that will be enough.

One thing is 100% certain and unanimous.

Russians have not been invited to either Hiroshima nor Nagasaki. And won't be invited - indefinitely.

3 ( +7 / -4 )

JJEToday 04:20 pm JST

Inviting the collaborators and enablers of the Israeli genocide is just as shameful.

And we all know that is the US.

Nope. Being a war criminal is worse than inviting one over for dinner.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

The Russian Federation and the Russians and I personally don’t give a damn who will participate in this. Whoever bombed Japan, let him take part. The Russian Federation has its own view on. happening.

-8 ( +4 / -12 )

What will dear guests from the USA say at this “holiday”? “We regret, but we had no other choice, that’s the question. And who will be invited there and who won’t is of no interest to anyone

-6 ( +5 / -11 )

Japan is indeed a US vassal state.

That is the key fact explaining why the LDP supported mayor of Hiroshima did not think twice about inviting Israel.

Hiroshima always grabs the spotlight during anniversary ceremonies and there is some resentment about that in Nagasaki. That is useful for the US, since it easier to control things in Hiroshima.

Notice the Nagasaki mayor is worried about protests. Of course the protests against Israel would also be directed against the US.

-6 ( +5 / -11 )

War criminals!

That is the kind of criminal that intentionally targets civilians in a war.

Who intentionally targeted civilians in Nagasaki? Hiroshima? Tokyo? Nagoya? Osaka?

If you go to Nagasaki or Hiroshima, be sure to talk to the school kids. There will be many around. They're just like the kids who were bombed in 1945.

-8 ( +5 / -13 )

Unlike the sell-outs in Hiroshima, this guy seems to back his convictions. Good on him.

Pro-tip: you don't rack up 10 million dead in China without targeting civilians.

9 ( +11 / -2 )

"10 million dead in China"

The Tokyo War Crimes Tribunal somehow managed to miss many of the key Japanese war criminals and they ended up in the LDP with the backing of the US... a kind of war criminal coalition.

Naturally war criminals have each others back.

-4 ( +6 / -10 )

Both Russia and Belarus should be invited to the Hiroshima and Nagasaki ceremonies.

The Japanese media simply recycles US media lies about Ukraine. The media cynically plays on the pacifism of most Japanese who know nothing of the US 2014 sponsored coup in Kiev or the decade of attacks on civilians in Donbass by US-backed forces.

Russia has gone out of its way to avoid civilian casualties in Ukraine. Russia has the military capability to do what the US did to Japanese cities, but has NOT done so in Ukraine. Israel on the other hand is coming to Hiroshima after carrying out a US-funded bombing campaign of genocide in Gaza.

-4 ( +7 / -11 )

Russia has gone out of its way to avoid civilian casualties in Ukraine. Russia has the military capability to do what the US did to Japanese cities, but has NOT done so in Ukraine.

You are seriously praising fascist Russia for not using nuclear weapons during their illegal invasion of sovereign Ukraine? Am I reading this correctly?

SMH.

1 ( +7 / -6 )

Yeah Roberto, you are a bit late to the cause....Hamas has repeatedly offered to release all the hostages if Israel withdraws its military.

And Hamas has also said that attacks like the October 7 one would be attempted again and again. You weren’t reading the news that day?

0 ( +6 / -6 )

Yes Fighto

Everyone praises Russia for its restraint and tradition of not using atomic weapons. But the same cannot be said about America. America used nuclear weapons against Japan without warning, or you don't know it. Go to your Ukraine and defend your territories before it’s too late.

-4 ( +3 / -7 )

It’s disappointing that Nagasaki chose to indulge those who support Hamas. However, this decision is understandable. Recently pro-Hamas demonstrators in Washington, D.C. engaged in violence against the police, engaged in destruction of property, and engaged in thievery.

What mayor would not want to avoid such violence.

0 ( +5 / -5 )

Important to keep in mind the American political class hosted an indicted war criminal in their senate, gave him a standing ovation.

Netanyahu hasn’t been indicted

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

Who intentionally targeted civilians in Nagasaki? Hiroshima? Tokyo? Nagoya? Osaka?

Nobody. The US specifically targeted key military targets and issued evacuation orders to civilians

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

An act of cowardice in the face of fear?

"due to the risk of "unexpected situations" such as protests, amid international condemnation of the country's war conduct."

0 ( +4 / -4 )

Israelis should not be welcomed at an event which seeks to promote peace.

My guess is that the Israelis are too busy ensuring their citizens are no longer slaughtered by blood thirsty terrorists to pay it much mind.

1 ( +6 / -5 )

Yeah Roberto, you are a bit late to the cause....Hamas has repeatedly offered to release all the hostages if Israel withdraws its military.

GuruMick, you don’t get it. Late to the party. Hamas will be obliterated root and branch. “Peacetalks” with with these scum is meaningless. They would just rebuild and rearm and strike again. No way GuruMick. Hamas goose is cooked. Feel free to cry if you want to.

Imagine keeping both of these thoughts in your head at the same time. Sorry, but Russia's war of aggression on Ukraine is the ultimate war crime.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Everyone praises Russia for its restraint and tradition of not using atomic weapons.

Only because they know the consequences would dire for them as well. Russia should not be praised for raping, looting, and murdering.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Japan is exercising its full right and moral obligation to defend itself and its citizens and will continue to do so.

Keep those war criminal Zionists away from this land!

0 ( +4 / -4 )

It’s disappointing that Nagasaki chose to indulge those who support Hamas. However, this decision is understandable. Recently pro-Hamas demonstrators in Washington, D.C. engaged in violence against the police, engaged in destruction of property, and engaged in thievery.

Japan could’ve pulled it off. Thankfully this part of the world isn’t a hot sport for hothead activists and protesters . We should never remember this simple golden rule . Never flinch for a second to the mob. It has a ripple effect for the worse, like every time.

No matter which side of the fence you fall, they should’ve listened to this fellow, who holds the wisdom of age and actual experience. He actually lived through the hell. Others want to see it again.

Lest we forget.

Does two wrongs make it right? Hardly ever. You can't claim discrimination by discriminating.
