Yoichi Miyazawa, the newly appointed trade and industry minister, on Saturday visited the disaster-stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant.
Miyazawa, who took the job after his predecessor Yuko Obuchi resigned over a political fund scandal last month, was making his first visit to the stricken plant.
Miyazawa met Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) workers at the nuclear power plant and praised their efforts over the past three and a half years since the disaster struck.
Miyazawa said that despite many setbacks, it was vital that work to control contaminated water and decommission the plant remain on schedule.

It's interesting that every new minister has to go up to Tohoku to inspect and be clued in to what's going on in Tohoku.
Haven't these govt. officials already been up there? If not, shouldn't they have been?
I keep hearing from these "caring politicians" that this is supposed to be a national disaster that needs immediate attention and action.
I'd love to have one step in and say, "I know what's going on. We need to (fill in actual leadership activity here). Let's do this."

Better than sending his aides to S * M bars but he should check Obuchi's inspexction report and NEC recommendation, Travel money can be donated to Fukushima victims shelters. Redundant trios as he is not an expert in nuclear energy plant operations except he has TEPCO stocls.

Do these guys ever visit the "temporary" housing complexes? Perhaps they should take up residence there this winter. Perhaps things will move faster.
