Let us all hope that this prime minister is for the people and not against the people. Let the truth come out for the benefit of all nations.

You can't really blame the Japanese government for getting false information from TEPCO.

Noda conceded that Japan had overestimated its preparedness for tsunamis.

Shouldn't that be 'underestimated'?

Japan overestimated its presparedness and underestimated the strength of tsunamis.

Noda tells U.N. Japan will provide accurate info on nuclear crisis

Yes as usual, faithfully to their secretive nature when they don't provide any info even on minor insignificant things where they could afford it without any consequences.

Well, there was a disaster they lied to the world and suddenly Noda came and Japan made delicate adjustment on her nature, changed in no time and became a truth-teller .

How fascinating.

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda said Thursday that Japan was working to complete the “cold shutdown” of the stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant by the end of the year and promised that Japan would disclose to the international community all information related to the accident in a swift and accurate manner.

By repeating the lie about the "cold shutdown" he already failed his promise. Well, at least the world knows now what to expect from him...

Weedkla@,

Good links. It is an utter disgrace that they want to send that poison to people in poorer countries. They should reject their radioactive fish and burn it in effigy!

Noda ... also told the gathering that Japan is determined to raise the safety of nuclear power generation to the highest level in the world

But not the public's safety?! The government recently stated that they're removing radioactive debris from the Tohoku area to burn at waste disposal plants all over Japan. This is actually a brilliant idea! When cancers and other illnesses start to rise in other areas of Japan that'll make it more difficult for the parents of ill children in Fukushima, Miyagi etc to sue. You can check the following link to see if there's one near you.

On a similar note, in order to dispel rumours about radiation contamination of products from Fukushima and neighbouring prefectures, the Japanese government is going to offer these products along with canned fish from the affected areas to developing countries like Pakistan as part of its ODA. They're 'kindly' donating this aid for free. Well at least the government has been more forthcoming about presenting accurate information.

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda said Thursday that Japan was working to complete the 'cold shutdown' of the stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant by the end of the year

Lol -- I agree with beangry's comment. To achieve a cold shutdown means inserting rods into the fuel to stop the reaction. How is that possible when the fuel has already melted, along with the rods, the zirconium cladding etc to form a molten mess called corium. To make matters worse it's already made its way through the bottom of the containment vessels. Good luck with a cold shutdown by the end of the year, Tepco.

I believe him, but he won't be in power to see the cold shut down finished.

promised that Japan would disclose to the international community all information related to the accident in a swift and accurate manner

Six months and way too many lies too late. This is completely laughable.

"Noda, making his diplomatic debut on the world stage, also told the gathering that Japan is determined to raise the safety of nuclear power generation to the highest level in the world,"

How, by following Hosono's lead of reneging on promises made after the initial disaster occurred and watering down other promises, like letting international teams inspect the plants?

"...but stopped short of saying whether or not his government would phase out nuclear power."

Yeah, we saw through that promise a long time ago. Guess Noda got the padded envelope from the power companies.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Swift and accurate, eh? Same thing they said 6 months and another PM ago. The J-public may accept this lie being told to them over and again, but other nations and agencies should not -- time to put the crunch on Japan and start a massive ban on imports until they start showing results and not just making promises they never keep.

some14some: politicians lie with a straight face.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Lip service, the truth would put egg on too many peoples faces and people don't want to lose their jobs

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Accurate information? They'll have to beat it out of TEPCO first!

Noda conceded that Japan had overestimated its preparedness for tsunamis.

Shouldn't that be 'underestimated'?

Anyway, regardless of being under over, the facts are, this plant was bult with minimal safety measures 40 years ago and despite warnings from outside parties and recommendations the plant was not upgraded. his is what lead to the disaster. Mother nature just pointed out how inadequate the Japanese safety standards were. There are more plants in Fukushima that are exactly the same as Dai-Ichi. What have they done about them? Nothing, of ourse. It is just talk Noda-san! We are all waiting to see some action!

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Will Noda begin by relating to the the evacuees in Fukushima just how safe they are in their current locations and in their planned relocation Will he in all honesty inform the people in Japan the full extent of radioactive pollution, airborne, groundwater and soil contaminents? Will he be able to foretell just how many of the population will in all probability develop cancers in the future due to too close contact to contaminated areas? The people want the truth, the global community want the truth, but most of all we want action in regards to the safety of the population of Japan

In a similar vein to Borscht, I want to quote this and speak

"Japan will provide accurate info"

a) This is an admission Japan has not told the truth b) Why should we believe people who lie?

As to talk of the "cold shutdown", this is a red herring, as even the Japan Times had an expert submit an article on it last week saying so. Why? The fuel is in a melted state, possibly in or out of the reactor. Shame on these despicable liars for creating false hope that merely cooling that fuel will mean things are safer. According to Asahi yesterday, the plant is STILL giving off 1/4 of the radiation it was in March - every single day! Simply cooling that fuel - which may in fact register lower temperatures because it is melted through the containment (which is highly possible), and woud not be an improvement at all.

Japan screwed up. Japan repeatedly lied. Noda is re[eating the Nuke industry lie that "safe" nuclear technology is possible, it isn't, and he's not planning on phasing anything out. He's business as usual, which is why Kan had to go - in part.

Noda seems too sincere, too good to be true?!

promised that Japan would disclose to the international community all information related to the accident in a swift and accurate manner.

Two questions.

Why did he (or the translation) include "to the international community"? Because in Japan 'the international community' implies 'not Japan' as Japan is unique and different from the rest of the world. Also, if the Japanese government hasn't disclosed all information in a swift and accurate manner to the people of Fukushima, why believe they will to the 'international community'?

Will this be the first time the Japanese government discloses all information in a swift and accurate manner?

If Japan could provide accurate info to U.N., then J-goverment should promise and provide full transparency on speedy compensation to people that live near Fukushima. The real victims are these people that lost everything and they deserve a full disclosure of the actions that J-goverment is taking.
