There are shop in ASAKUSABASHI who sell ivory products and supplies openly with only a sign warning tourists not to buy their products . Ivory is still very much sold around Japan !

Japan should follow own customs and ignore that Libacrite who is running NYC to new lows. Cultural tolerance should be taught to those nit pickers.

de Blasio really needs to take more of an interest in the city he’s responsible for running. Pedestrian and cyclist deaths are skyrocketing and the subway system is a disgrace. It’s unbelievable that he thinks he deserves to be president.

WTF! We sell ivory?

I completely agree with @yokohamarides. Of the zillion problems and challenges NYC (and their taxpayers) have, having time to even care about someone in Tokyo selling ivory is laughable and stunning.

So the people saying "hey NYC also isn't perfect" agree with killing an endangered species in order to make trinkets from it body parts? Bizarre logic tbh.

Ah yes! Play the 'custom' card! If you have a barbaric & destructive commercial practice and you need to hide the odium of its shame, rebadge it as a 'custom' or 'tradition'. Those carved tooth trinkets on your mantelpiece are vital to the nation's soul. The elephants must pay! Our custom, our right, their problem.

How is this relevant to an article on Japan's ivory trade? Oh, you just wanted to attack de Blasio. Mission accomplished.

Very clever to throw in the Olympics and tarnishing the reputation. Might lessen the knee-jerk reaction of "none of your business" despite Japan helping the poaching of elephants and other animals world-wide by trading in ivory.
