I am not sure there was even 100 million living in Japan at the time.
10s of thousands or hundreds of thousands is more like what would have happened depending on how much longer the war was if there were no Hiroshima/Nagasaki bombings.

"might have, could have, and would have" are excuses frequently told by scoundrels, but if there's any consolation, they might not be reprehensible as an outright denial :P

Bit like homer simpson defending his nuclear record.

Obama doesn't need to offer an apology for sure, coz what "many Americans" say is 100% correct: "it hastened the end of a brutal and bloody conflict". If not the nuclear attack, hundreds of millions of more people might die. In view of that, Japanese government should offer gratitude to this bravery decision Truman has made: it saved their country. As for apology...it is Japanese government that should offer constant apology for invading almost the entire east Asia/west Pacific during the WWII, including the US, China, Korea, Southeast Asian countries, etc, causing tens of millions of casualty, of many die of the most brutal torture and gang rape way beyond what a civilized man can ever imagine. And both Japanese government and Japanese people should feel ashamed those class A war criminals are still memorized in the high-end shrine in the center of Tokyo. It is exactly equivalent to Germans memorize Adolf Hitler in the biggest cathedral of Berlin.
