He pointed to the various brands of Japanese-made cars filling the streets of Washington compared to a lack of GM, Chrysler and Ford vehicles in Tokyo.

Japanese-made car in USA?

Does he mean Japanese people make cars in USA or Made in Japan?

Those are made in USA cars. Not made in Japan. These Japanese brand cars have left-side handle. GM, Chrysler and Ford cars are also left-side handled cars in USA. If they make divisions that make right side handle cars in Japan, they will be selling in Japan where streets are wide. Then they might be able to export to other Asian countries.

"He ( Rep. Sander Levin, the senior Democrat of House Ways Means Committee) pointed to the various brands of Japanese-made cars filling the streets of Washington compared to a lack of GM, Chrysler and Ford vehicles in Tokyo."

First of all, like toshiko said, most of those "Japanese-made" cars are manufactured in the U.S., second, they sell well because they are well-designed and well-made, third, GM, Chrysler and Ford vehicles aren't selling well in Tokyo mainly because, heck, why buy them when we can buy a Toyota or a Nissan or a Honda or a Subaru or a...

Yeah, it's funny how many of those "Japanese" cars were built in the US by American autoworkers Ford and GM had no use for.

Have any of these idiots in congress ever been to Japan? Nobody wants to drive the gas guzzling cars that those companies produce. There is not a need and there is no call for them. unlike in the unites states were any manufacturer of vehicles is fine to use and drive around. Maybe if the US made something people wanted they would buy it, funny how that works.

In Japan, US made PC, Iphone, Music, Medical machine, Medicine, Produce, Soldiers, Fighters, Aircraft, English teachers, USBonds, on and on. Even Japanese cars are made in USA. It is Japan that should be whinning, not USA.

all this japanese car talk. what's really needed is cheaper japanese trucks in the US. will the trade agreement ensure that the taxes on japanese trucks become fair?

If you start talking about fairness, there are many things what US does to Japan are not fair. It's not fair for POTUS to bring up only one aspect and demand fairness. The Japanese would be laughing at him.

@tinawatanabeAPR. 18, 2015 - 11:28AM JST In Japan, US made PC, Iphone, Music, Medical machine, Medicine, Produce, Soldiers, Fighters, Aircraft, English teachers, USBonds, on and on. Even Japanese cars are made in USA. It is Japan that should be whinning, not USA

Are you sure they are made in USA? HP is only the company barely survived in ISA but other makers are Japan Inc in USA. Toshiba and Sony competition Toshiba won. Japanese brand made in USA dominate USA market. Olympis IUSA dominate medical equipment marketing in USA. Only defense industry is left in USA and others are Japan Inc in USA. But even Boeing is in trouble as Mitsubishi and Hitachi and other contractots skip Boeing now. In USA, linens and clothes market are dominated by China, This is why USA wanted TPP to export Mich based US auto to nrbexported to Japan. .

BTW, Japanese in USA that create left side handled cars also create trucks, too. As their sister factories in Japan make right handed trucks in Japan, and Japanese brand cars are not included in TPP negotiations, they are not interested their USA created left side handled trucks to export to Japan. companies

toshiko, PC's OS is US company, and other pc software like facebook or twitter, etc. through which, US is dominating the world and its intelligence. US Music is the top of the world and Japan is its largest market. Agriculture is the top of the world, US pharmaceuticals maybe the top too, most medicin in Japan are from US, etc. How about Disney. US is controling many of Japan's market like US military in Japan. But the biggest power is I think USBond.

@tina: You use programming language to produce software products. OS is not a company. Microsoft created OS years ago and now Windows replaced old OS. Need hardware to develop software using programming languages, create .exe files and market. Facebook, google are not called software. We just say Software Hardware. but actually computer program and computer. Laptop maker companies install Window 7 (now 10) and market in Japan. So you thought OS ia a company? fBook and Googles are not software. When you have OS installed computer, you have 80 characters by 24 lines on digital display. So, it is vanished. Used to be desktop. Window installed computers, you can create animation programs. MS retired old programming languages that old programs we had to redo with newer languages MS Windows can recognize. It is like Toyota cars install Goodyear tires. Toshiba laptop installs Window 7. QR codes you see on intro screen, Japanese laptops use Japanese man created QR code. Also, Japanese laptops do not use USA word processors. CD (old now) and HD are Japanese company production and market in USA.

@toshiko, My point is that US is dominating many industries in Japan. I don't like US govt try to give false impression to it people as if Japan were closed and unfair market.

Obama said "the various brands of Japanese-made cars filling the streets of Washington compared to a lack of GM, Chrysler and Ford vehicles in Tokyo"

Japanese cars in Washington have nothing to do with US cars in Tokyo. This has been US attitude for decades: trying to sell US cars by using political clout, not by making cars Japanese want.

In TPP negotiation US is demanding Japan buy US rice. US govt may be nice to its own people, but not to Japan. .

Earlier in the day, Rep. Sander Levin, the senior Democrat of House Ways Means Committee, declared he was “out to defeat” the legislation because, he said, it would cost U.S. jobs and damage the environment. Only a few Democrats in the House, Levin predicted, would support the legislation.

He pointed to the various brands of Japanese-made cars filling the streets of Washington compared to a lack of GM, Chrysler and Ford vehicles in Tokyo.

Obama did not say. Levin said.

Only USA has industry is Mchigan car makers and Boeing. There is no other industries in USA because Japan Inc is dominating everywhere. Which industry in Japan are you talking? Detroit is bankrupting. Not only Japanese but Korean product is popular. too. For clothings, Chinese. You believe there are USA industries. Wrong. Japan Inc subsidialies wiped out US industry quite while ago. That is why USA want TPP (desperately),

@toshiko, Japan Inc subsidialies wiped out US industry quite while ago

Those are made in USA, contributing US employment. Where are US factories in Japan? Japan govt is also contributing employment as US soldiers and English teachers in Japan. J govt is paying 12 Milion yen per US soldier a year and 300,000 yen or so a month to US English teachers who have zero experience in English teaching.

American music and culture are all over in Japan. Where is Enka, Japanese music in USA? USA is dominating and controling the world especially Japan by US dollars, US Bonds, and military.

@tinaL music industry in USA Sony owns CBS Music. TV series and TV channels Majority owned by /SONY Pictire Television company. I asked indsustry, Military is not industry. You haven;t written the name of US ManufACTURERS IN jAPAN YOU CLAIMED. Write corporation names I will ask about English Teacher to Ministry of Education official; abut extremely low paid English teacher existence in Japan. If Govt paid or not and their minimum qualification. . This is TPP talks area and it does not involve military or teachers.
