I suspect Koike is actually battling COVID in the ICU...

30 ( +45 / -15 )

How nice she is afforded that luxury. Tons of her fellow citizens are forced to carry on come what may on the road to death from overwork, the true scale of which has been scandalously covered up.

25 ( +34 / -9 )

These Olympics aren't good for health, told ya !

19 ( +27 / -8 )

"Fatigue" can be cured by a good night's sleep. If she is still requiring hospitalization, it's something else.

15 ( +22 / -7 )

Take all the rest you need, you're going to need that strength to face the media during and after the Olympics.

Deputy Governor Mitsuchika Tarao will continue to undertake official duties on her behalf for "a few more days on the doctor's decision", the Tokyo Metropolitan Government said in a statement.

What this really means: Koike will remain unavailable for media interview for a little longer, please refer your questions to other officials for the time being.

13 ( +23 / -10 )

Literally not fit enough to be Governor…lol !

13 ( +27 / -14 )

"Fatigue" has become a euphemism for what used to be called a nervous breakdown

11 ( +16 / -5 )

In the meantime while she sits on her privileged butt in hospital because she is tired.

I have been waiting nearly 2 months for an MRI because most major hospitals are closed to outside referrals that are not emergencies under their covid protocol.

The smaller hospitals and clinics with the available equipment in Tokyo are over worked trying to deal with the overly high demand because of this.

So as it is now the earliest I can get my MRI is late July. I am on a call list if there are cancellations for 3 facilities nearby but was told by one that I am 105 on the waiting list!

Must be nice to be so well off that one can get such special treatment!

I suspect Koike is actually battling COVID in the ICU...

Impossible to know as you can't get tested.

8 ( +13 / -5 )

The Tokyo election is on July 4 and the party she created, Tokumin first, is going to get easily beaten by the LDP and Komei coalition.

Instead of leading her troops and taking responsibility, she went into hiding, just like Abe when things got rough. Cowardly hypocrites both.

Koike has been talking to Nikai already about a return to the LDP. Abe also waiting in the wings.

7 ( +15 / -8 )

> I suspect Koike is actually battling COVID in the ICU...

Very likely, actually. I wouldn't be surprised at all.

Or a breakdown as the slow-motion train wreak reaches its final conclusion

She’s been up to her eyeballs in crap due to the hunger games

Oh please!

How many aids and employees does she have to help her1 0, 20, 30?

I was a single father low income, many of my children's friend's mother's were single mothers no help from ex-spouse very little from the government.

No helpers, aids, money hard to come by because full time work is hard to find when one has no choice but to be home for the children.

Bills and rent constantly late, few places will to rent to people that are single parents without a very good full time job.

Just one example of people that have 24/7 stress and little or no help or choice in life.

I could go on with other examples of "regular" people that daily circumstances make things 100 times more stressful than anything she could possibly imagine and none have the luxury or money to just "rest" in hospital waited on hand and foot by nurses and her aids.

My wife's coworkers has cancer, surgery and 3 days later back to work because he has a family to support, chemotherapy in the morning, still has to be at work in the afternoon, because he has bills to pay.

If she doesn't have covid and it really is fatigue, she should be the leader she claimed to be get off her butt and back to work.

6 ( +13 / -7 )

So many people with time to waste on this site criticizing the mayor of Tokyo for taking a break from work.

Is she taking a break from getting paid because there's probably more than a few commenters here who don't have the luxury of paid sick leave?

6 ( +8 / -2 )

I would have said this is not a positive thing for her future political ambitions, but Abe made a huge comeback to the Prime minister position even after resigning for health related reasons, so maybe this is not seen as bad by the public as it would be in other countries.

5 ( +8 / -3 )

I have had extreme exhaustion. it is scary to say the least. It takes a lot longer than a week to get over.

5 ( +10 / -5 )

@Cleo,

Pet loss.

I know where you are coming from.

Nobody loves animals more than me.

However,I never signed on to be the leader of the world's biggest city.

She did and she should stand up there and be counted at this urgent time of need.

She is is as corrupt as all of the other Nippon Kaigi members.

Deflect is the name of the game here.

5 ( +8 / -3 )

She was vaccinated though

Quite a number of people in the UK have died from the Delta variant even though they had two shots already. And she's no spring chicken.

4 ( +11 / -7 )

KiwikidToday  10:27 am JST

Not being snarky, does anyone know of another country's Prime Minister, Mayors, or major politicians being hospitalised for stress/exhaustion? Or just anyone outside Japan hospitalised for stress/exhaustion?

I think there is more than a bit of a cultural element to this. Certainly in the UK (where I’m from) the general sentiment would be “you ended up hospital for fatigue? How much do you work…what? Then you’re an idiot for breaking yourself over a job that probably isn’t worth it”. I imagine in Japan, though people may deny it, overworking yourself to the point of temporary infirmity is considered kind of heroic.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

She may very well have 'fatigue', but I suspect it's a symptom of Covid.

Maybe not bad enough to be in an ICU, but a positive test means isolation and she will keep 'extending her stay for fatigue' until she provides a negative test.

I'm not usually one for conspiracy theories, but as soon as this was reported the wife and I both said 'yeah right, she's got Covid'.

4 ( +9 / -5 )

Don't worry! Take a month, relax!

Unlike all those working stiffs whose livlihoods you've wrecked by closing down their shops or limiting by fiat what they can and can't sell, you will get your paycheck whether you do any work or not. Isn't it great being a "public servant"?

Just don't read any newspapers to see how your "lockdowns" are not having their desired effect (even if they do come with plenty of destructive ones!) Ignore that and push on with the only thing that really matters now: the "Games".

Koike to extend hospital rest for fatigue

In unrelated news. Absolutely nothing has changed, for the positive or negative since she took leave.

3 ( +7 / -4 )

@Zoroto

as the first non-healthcare workers 65 or older just got their 2nd vaccines starting yesterday.

That is not correct!

My parents in law are both in their 70s and non healthcare workers.

Both are finished 2 weeks ago with their 2nd shots.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

NipponGlory

too much slanders against Koike-san in this commentary section. VERY disappointing to see this.

Did you hear what Aso said about her?

3 ( +6 / -3 )

@Antiquesaving

I have a question...

Your children's grandparents and your mother in law...where is the different?

Your mother in law is your wife's mother...65 years old.

She is a grandparent of your children....but sometimes they are in their 90s and now she is 65?

Or is my thinking wrong?

3 ( +5 / -2 )

@cleo

I am not sure are you being sarcastic?

If not

"Give the woman time to grieve.

Seriously, I lost 2 direct family members to covid last year 2 aunts plus my sister in law's mother ( brother's wife).

Grieve!!! We haven't even been permitted to bury them or have their funerals, under the restrictions back home and even if we could I cannot even travel home under them present regulations without it taking over a months to get in quarantine, get tested return quarantine, etc...

A pet loss! Sorry loved every pet I ever had including gerbils lizards, dogs cats, I even own a horse in my youth.

If I needed time to grieve every time a pet died, I wouldn't have remained employed long.

2 ( +10 / -8 )

Hope she recovers well although, she is going to jump straight back into the snake pit that put her there as soon as she recovers.

1 ( +6 / -5 )

Yes, ‘fatigue’ does not require hospitalization.

her last public appearance was like a junior employee pulling a sick call...she even put on the ‘weak’ sick voice with panting!

As an avid internet detective I would say it’s one of these two:

Covid...which if mild would need about 10 days in isolation/quarantine.

or

A cynical ploy to avoid the final lead up to the Stupid Games. Straight out of Abe’s play book...she can re-emerge and claim the choices made had nothing to do with her in the end.

1 ( +9 / -8 )

Not being snarky, does anyone know of another country's Prime Minister, Mayors, or major politicians being hospitalised for stress/exhaustion? Or just anyone outside Japan hospitalised for stress/exhaustion?

I notice runners (especially for the Hakone ekiden) here too do these massive Hollywood performances after their leg, too.

I feel "effort" is more verbalised or dramatised than what I'm use to in NZ. What I see I'd just call Hollywooding. Also, if a leader gets sick, and stressed just from doing their job I would expect them to resign. They obviously aren't fit for the job. I feel being too stressed is hidden in NZ for that reason.

I see that weakness/Hollywooding is a badge of honor here. A way to pat yourself on the back and fish for compliments. It feels so disingenuous and self-serving.

So from a non "Kiwi Bloke" perspective, is this behavior/situation normal in other countries? Or does it feel off to you too?

1 ( +10 / -9 )

wouldn't hospital level fatigure be an illness? Otherwise she'd be resting at home

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Who doesn’t get totally sick and exhausted about that planned super spreading event? Good recovery and quick cancellation of the games when back at the desk!

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Sorry not 2 weeks ago, 2 days ago.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

And, I am sure she will take all the time she needs.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

@Monty

My mother in law is an over 65 health care workers in Saitama, still hasn't gotten her first shot.

It will be this week!

Just because your parents in your area got theirs means nothing in the rest of the country as it is all run by each silly little area, some doing a great job others doing OK and other doing a terrible job.

Why do you think Tokyo opened up the Prefecture run vaccination centres or asked corporations to start helping?

Because so many places are doing a crappy job of things.

1 ( +9 / -8 )

What a way to hide! I have heard of going home and not coming out for a few weeks, but to hide in a hospital is a complete other level! This smells fishy...I bet she has COVID.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

@Antiquesaving

As mentioned many times all depends on where you live.

Yes that is correct.

I am not sure if your children's grandparents live in Tokyo, but in Tokyo the vaccine roll out improved a lot, so your children's grandparents will be fully vaccinated very soon.

Even they don't live in Tokyo, finally they got their voucher, so things will be alright very soon for them.

I will get my first shot this coming friday at my company , and my second shot end of July also at my Company.

0 ( +4 / -4 )

So many people with time to waste on this site criticizing the mayor of Tokyo for taking a break from work.

So many people could be infected during the Olympics and may have to take a break from having a life.

But yeah, thanks Koike, get well and come back to keep this aberration on !

0 ( +5 / -5 )

No Olympics,on problem

0 ( +1 / -1 )

I can’t believe so many posts are calling it Covid and stating she doesn’t need hospitalization for fatigue. Fatigue is both physical and mental. It’s half a step away from severe depression. She’s been up to her eyeballs in crap due to the hunger games (hunger for money and fame) and has had no rest. She must be close to becoming yet another ‘karoshi’ case in Japan.

-1 ( +9 / -10 )

That is not correct!

My parents in law are both in their 70s and non healthcare workers.

Both are finished 2 weeks ago with their 2nd shots.

As mentioned many times all depends on where you live.

My children's grandparents are in their mid 90s, our Tokyo ward is so behind that their first shot will be mid July.

They only got their vouchers about 2 weeks ago.

-1 ( +5 / -6 )

Your children's grandparents and your mother in law...where is the different?

My wife isn't my children's mother!

Been married 3 times

Divorce, ( I got the children was a single father most of their lives, their mother had a few issues sort of obvious seeing Japanese family court gave the Gaijin man custody).

Widower (my second wife passed away from cancer.).

Now married again and my children are now adults.

I have pointed this out a few times.

Does that clear up things?

-1 ( +7 / -8 )

Look @falseflagsteve 2:11pm, even though many of us here disagree with Koike’s grandstanding at times and temporarily disappearing at others

the “bitterness” you allude to comes from the frustration with delays on every important issue while still continue with her PR For the Games.

- “Plenty of bitterness to a woman who isn’t [may not be] felling well.” -

@6:56am says it best

*- “Once again, ‘Stay Home’ and “Stay Out of politics” until after you’re better. Sincerely, “Get Well and Do Better” for the people.“*

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Snowy

Don’t matter to me, if someone is unwell let them recover and wish them the best. When it comes to things like this it’s best to leave ones political beliefs to one side. Bitterness and envy are a waste of energy, they just produce negativity within oneself.

-1 ( +5 / -6 )

But, it *should* matter @ffs 3:38pm *if you truly desire the overall welfare of the people* and not just the Games.

*- “Don’t matter to me, if someone is unwell let them recover and wish them the best. When it comes to things like this it’s best to leave ones political beliefs to one side. Bitterness and envy are a waste of energy, they just produce negativity within oneself.” *

Perhaps acknowledging and addressing their bitterness? As opposed to just always saying, “Be positive everybody and Things will get better.” For some, it may. For some, it may never because of the last 18 months setbacks.

Not everyone deals with things like you. In the long run, more empathy will help others may lead to empathy for even those that are supposed to be “leading the people”.

Mind you, it will never lead to empathy for those in power abiding their positions and profiting from the people.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

If she continues her stay until August then her worst worries will be over!

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Well said @ffs 5:03pm agreed, have had similar losses and have had to do similar for business while keeping high spirits when others around continually furl their brows and scowl throughout the day.

Yet, don’t think Ms. K & the IOCLDPJOC have lived any of their lives in the way many have had to sacrifice for in the last 18 months.

Regardless, We ALL want this to end, as soon as possible, and get out to socialize like we used to after Tokyo is finished playing out Their Games. Looking forward again to a day of warm celebratory handshakes and many frosty pints with a group of friends on an open public terrace and NO more masks! - Cheers!

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

She Should Resign !!!

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

@Wobot if you want to go deeper down the rabbit hole, you could question exactly what was in that syringe. Or, even if she was vaccinated against Covid, doesn't mean she can't get it. And who knows with Delta Plus.

-2 ( +7 / -9 )

If she is fully vaccinated, it's unlikely she's in the ICU with COVID-19.

Exhaustion from over-work, as I'm sure you all know, is a potentially fatal condition and a real problem in Japan.

I feel bad for the people working under her who cannot take time off to recover in the hospital. Sadly, you only hear about them after the fact.

-3 ( +7 / -10 )

I am not sure if your children's grandparents live in Tokyo, but in Tokyo the vaccine roll out improved a lot, so your children's grandparents will be fully vaccinated very soon.

I have pointed all this out many times, yes Tokyo same messed up ward I live in and I just wrote their first shot in mid July that was the earliest!.

I know because despite being their ex- son in law I and my children are the ones caring for them, so we did all the work jumping through the insane hoops to even get that early!

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

How about @ffs 3:38pm, starting today at 4:30pm when the daily Covid “numbers” come out”?

Try to ‘acknowledge the difficulty people have sufferedFIRST, then acknowledge the “numbers” as presented,

rather than trying to ‘spin’ them into just promoting the continuance Games.

and “yes” - We ALL want this to end as soon as possible and get out to socialize like we used to.
-3 ( +2 / -5 )

So many people with time to waste on this site criticizing the mayor of Tokyo for taking a break from work

That is so, so true.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

the first non-healthcare workers 65 or older just got their 2nd vaccines starting yesterday.

Got ours two weeks past Friday, and didn't jump no queues.

I understand Ms Koike recently suffered pet loss. That can knock a person for six and make important decision-making, or even ordinary interaction with folk, impossible for a while.

Add on the awful job she has ... can't blame her for wanting/needing some time off.

Give the woman time to grieve.

-4 ( +5 / -9 )

Running the world's biggest city can be very challenging. She should have realized this before running for governor.

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

Plenty of bitterness to a woman who isn’t felling well. Also appears to be a lot of envy re her lifestyle, well life ain’t fair.

May she make a speedy recovery.

-5 ( +8 / -13 )

So many people with time to waste on this site criticizing the mayor of Tokyo for taking a break from work.

-7 ( +4 / -11 )

Probably working hard, due to the coming Olympics . . . we wish her well for rest and health.

-7 ( +1 / -8 )

Once *again, “**Stay Home***” and …*

- Jun 26: Koike's stance may boost LDP in Tokyo assembly election”.

… “Stay Out…of politics” until after you’re better. (stay “hospitalized” IF *necessary.)

Sincerely, “Get Well and Do Better” for the people.

-9 ( +1 / -10 )

Probably just burnout, as per the officially released statement. Covid? Come on! ;)

Now, now, guys. Give the woman a break. ;;)

-10 ( +8 / -18 )

too much slanders against Koike-san in this commentary section. VERY disappointing to see this.
