Edano is right. We can’t start penalizing people for not hospitalizing when there are already not enough beds to accept COVID patients in the first place.

On top of that, he’s right that our attention should be put on containing the virus and protecting what is left.

Trying to juggle social and economic activities just as Suga is now is it working. As they say, “He who chases two hares catches neither.”

Suga rebutted, saying his decision was based on expert opinions.

Here's the problem, if they were experts, it wouldnt be their opinions, it would be their statements of facts!

What a load of Garbage! Since when has the LDP listened to the experts? If they did, the SOE would resemble the first one. Suga is full of Bull

The panel of experts that Suga is referring is the replacement board that was scrapped from the original and placed power in the hands of Nishimura and the LDP. The original panel wanted to control the virus and Abe wanted to open the economy. The LDP did the same with the Nuclear Regulation Authority. Immediately after 3/11 they revamped the corrupt predecessor but since their restrictions were too "severe" they replaced it with a watered down watchdog which is now only a facade for nuclear safety with the main emphasis on restart of the nukes. In short, the LDP want to control the narrative and use so-called advisory panels and regulatory agencies as their mouthpiece.

Yukio Edano said the country's medical system is "not just strained but has already collapsed" due to the government's slow response.

Only country in the world where medical system is collapsed but everyone is living their normal lives, working from offices (no remote working at most companies), packing restaurants, trains, meeting rooms, until 8PM.

Wonder why?...

The government is now planning to make a legal revision to penalize those who reject hospitalization with imprisonment of up to one year or a fine of 1 million yen.

I was under the impression that there is a shortage of hospital beds and facilities??

Generally, I agree with all of points Edano has raised in this article

Go figure, right? Suga's administration is pretty much the same as any other LDP administration: Its the blind leading the blind to the tune of the Benny Hill Show.

dbsaiya is completely right. The new panel replaced a lot of scientists by business people. Japan had Covid licked by summer and as an island country could have kept it that way, same as Australia, NZ and Taiwan, by being extremely strict on people entering the country. But no, they let Japanese businessmen come and go freely. Go to Travel spread it from Tokyo/Osaka to the rest of Japan. So now we are locked down again as new strains circulate rapidly.

Why do businessmen have to travel overseas? Too tech-challenged to use Zoom I suppose.
