The operator of one of the six pachinko parlors in question said it will continue to operate, calling for state compensation in return for closing its business.

Amazing, and to think that some believe all Japanese to be brainwashed robots who automatically obey authority without hesitation. These people just prove that many people around the world care not about the greater good, but about what benefits them.

When people don’t have money to buy food then ‘public shaming’ means little!

Shaming will not work as people have choices to be defiant. The only way is to declare a lockdown to have a full power.

The city should turn off their electricity and water.

Now do the same for the "black" companies, embezzeling exectutives, bribed politicos, and bureaucrats and police caught criminally abusing power.

Yeah well even though they’re not forcing these companies to shut down, I suppose is the next best thing I guess. I mean sure it would be great if these companies were required to shut down considering, but this is I think the next best thing.

I realize the intent is to "shame" them into complying and closing. But I suspect all it did was let all the pachinko junkies know where to go.

The concept is good, but how are you going to shame a Kansaijin let alone in all probability the yakuza who own the pachinko parlor? Yamaguchi-gumi to Osaka mayor; one finger salute.

This is impossible here in Japan. The laws and constitution prevent it, and people dont want it changed. So get used to seeing articles like this. AND seeing articles about more people dying from the virus as well.

I agree and if you refuse to take aggressive measures in this country and start going after establishments like these eyesore Pachinko parlors, you just won’t get this virus under control.

Publishing a list of open pachinko parlors lets everyone know which ones are open and they can go play pachinko there. It is like free advertising or publicity for them.

When I glanced at their locations, I was interested that half of them are in Sakai city with their own mayor and an independent streak: not wanting to merge into Osaka-to as proposed by Isshin no kai etc.

Also, an article about pachinko the parlor workers union would be interesting. The news said their union has to approve new regs such as stopping customers from outside the area, I guess because it could lead to abuse of the staff.

I wish I could list all the bars that refuse to close. This is not a shutdown for everyone.

The other pachinko parlors are still open, by the way. It's just that the above 6 refused to even close early. I think it's time we stood up to the Pachinko companies by putting social pressure on them. You can call this shame or you can call it freedom of expression by the rest of us who have curtailed our social interactions and work and are itching for something to do.

To ensure compliance to the closure request, the government should pay compensation to these pachinko parlor owners so they can pay rent, utility bills, and wages to employees.

Pachinko or gambling business clients will for me do not give a damn about this listing. Pachinko parlors do not always have a good reputation anyway from the large public, who does not go there anyway, and listing these parlors as the bad boys will not change much.

Been here for 20 years and never been into it, A waste of money for a game that in my opinion does not use enough the brain cells ( like chess for example) I might be wrong but I will be interested to hear the voice of the real pachinko customers and their opinions, If some of you on this forum are pachinko addicts, let me know

More publicity for these pachinko parlours. In all my life here, I have never felt the urge to step into one. The noise just frightens me. Plus, I'd rather spend my money on food.

Does the city government have any tax laws or the ability to tax industries? If yes, the city can tax open pachinko parlors at a rate of say, oh, 50~75% of income. Call it a 'health excise tax.' The decision to be open or closed is then up to the pachinko owner. If open, the city makes enough money to hospitalize infected pachinko players and others. Maybe even buy masks from Abe's friends!

Four possible outcomes: a) pachinko owners will find new and clever ways to hide their income b) pachinko owners will bribe politicians not to pass such a law. c) pachinko owners will close their shops. d) pachinko owners will keep their shops open and pay the tax.
