According to what I've read (including at JT), this must have been to everyone's relief. On another topic, I'm getting the impression that he is more clever than people are willing to admit. I doubt he would have done anything embarrassing during a meeting with the Emperor and Empress.

How coincidental is that?

If you're saying what I think you're saying, well maybe it's because of his policies towards drug addicts.........and towards Americans...

Yes! And I mean that about the cancellation, not the prince's death. Kindest regards to the Emperor and family. One thing I must say, though, is that he lasted to 100 years. That's a big thing, when it comes to tenacity of spirit, and tenacity of spirit is what Japan is all about.

Besides drug enforcement, what Duterte and Philippines government needs to do is to enforce corruption law of elected officials, policemen, and people that work for the government. That would be a start. I doubt any changes will take place in Philippines.

Bad omen!

This is a little off topic, but I never heard much about Prince Mikasa before. Now I am hearing what he wrote about Japan in WWII and his feeling of guilt about what Japan did, I wonder if the Emperor has read this. The Emperors language is always very subtle, but it sometimes sounds like this. Incidentally, Duterte's language is just the opposite of subtle. It is very direct.

Toshiko says that yet they are in here calling people Gaijin smh. People dislike him because he murders addicts instead of getting them the rehab they need and how he acts towards Americans please research before speaking you never seem to like us "gaijin" so you are never any different from your accusations.

@Toshiko,

Gainin writers here ape not polite and ridicule him. Racism?

Is it racist to be appalled by wholesale human rights abuses?

On another note:

Duterte proposed joint military exercises with Japan, while reiterating that he will not conduct them with Americans in his presidency.

A divide-and-rule tactic proposed to him by Beijing?

It seems to not matter Duterte meets Emperor or not. Emperor is neither politician nor businessman. He rather likes to observe the patrol excercise more.

Thank goodness,

Long live the Emperor.

So the Emperor uncle took one for the family. Good on him to gave his life so Deterte Harry would not be able to infest the house of the Emperor. Great diplomacy. Something Deterte Harry could learn. So Deterte Harry has flew home to deal with some Navy bosses. Ha, I wonder how is really running the Phillipines.

Our condolence to the Royal family, and probably a sigh of relief for Prime Minister Abe and Foreign Minister Kishida. Let's see what will happen to the would be war criminal and his cronies. The UN should send a fact-finding team to the Philippines to investigate Duterte's mass-murders.

The Imperial Family was saved from the cursing of the Asian Trump!

If you're saying what I think you're saying, well maybe it's because of his policies towards drug addicts.........and towards Americans...

...and towards rape victims...and towards women in general. It's not a short list.

If you want to talk racism, you can start by not using the word Gaijin. You wouldn't like it if someone called you a Jap writer.

BBC is reporting that Duerte claims that God spoke to him on his flight back from Japan, while everyone else was asleep, and told him the plane would crash unless he promised to clean up his language, so he's vowed to stop swearing. ]

Interesting fellow,....

Stroke of luck for the Emperor

@taj: did that mean that he should stop swearing during the plane ride? After the plane lands, it would not seem to matter.

Racism is using the term Gaijin. Don't use it. You don't want someone calling you a JAPanese writer, do you?

I'm willing to be there was a collective sigh of relief on this one.
