The US Coast Guard has operated in the western Pacific for over a century. The Treasury Class, so named because the cutters were named after former Secretaries of the Treasury, was designed to carry aircraft and serve as a search and rescue asset for the trans-Pacific flying boats that were popular on long trans-Pacific routes with stop overs in places like Hawaii and Wake. They were also used to counter smugglers and to show the flag around Asiatic waters and the Pacific islands.
