Pompeo says G7 agrees China spreading virus disinformation

By ANDREW CABALLERO-REYNOLDS

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Group of Seven foreign ministers agreed with him in talks Wednesday that China was waging a "disinformation" campaign about the coronavirus pandemic.

The top diplomats from the major industrialized nations held a previously scheduled meeting by videoconference, with the United States scrapping a meeting in Pittsburgh as the contagion fears restrict international travel.

Pompeo, who has heavily criticized Beijing over what he calls the "Wuhan virus," said he was united with other ministers -- from Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan.

"Every one of the nations that were at that meeting this morning was deeply aware of the disinformation campaign that the Chinese Communist Party is engaged in to try and deflect from what has really taken place," Pompeo told reporters after the talks.

Pompeo said that China "has been and continues to be engaged in" a campaign on social media that has included conspiracy theories that the United States was behind the virus, which was first detected in the Chinese metropolis of Wuhan.

"This is crazy talk," Pompeo said.

The G7 talks came a day before a virtual summit of leaders of the Group of 20 major economies, which include the United States and China.

Beijing has appeared to bring the virus under control and has stepped up aid by delivering masks and other supplies around the world -- including to US allies such as Italy, which has the world's highest death toll.

Pompeo minimized China's efforts and said the United States was "finalizing plans" to deploy excess military equipment to Italy.

China is "now making small sales of product around the world and claiming that they are now the white hat in what has taken place," Pompeo said.

But he said the United States sought cooperation.

"We desperately want to work with every country around the world. This is a global pandemic," he said.

"The United States wants to work with every country including China to figure out how to resolve to keep as many people alive -- as many people as healthy -- and then to restore our economies that have been decimated by the Wuhan virus."

Gee, Pompeo, kinda late to the party huh?

Any sane and rational person knew a long time ago the Chinese government was willfully complicit in not only withholding vital information, but also deliberately covering up the true scope of the disaster unfolding in Wuhan. This is the direct cause of much of the misery we see throughout the world today. Studies have shown that had the Chinese government been fully transparent from the time the mysterious flu infection started popping up in Wuhan in early December, up to 95% of it would have been contained and would not have spread as bad as it has internationally.

The Chinese government (as always) has blood on its hands. That's not 'racist,' that's fact.

Time to disconnect from China, the lies are never going to stop and this is only one part of the game plan to dominate the world.

17 ( +28 / -11 )

Not many people would doubt China spreads misinformation when it suits it.....but Pompeo and the noeocon bunch with their record are not much different either. Pot kettle black.

13 ( +16 / -3 )

I would remind Pompeo that the so called "Spanish Flu" after WW1 actually originated in the States and was brought to Europe but the American soldiers... Should we re-write the history books to get that correct?

13 ( +15 / -2 )

Readers, it is not the Chinese people but their government and those within it in power. For the most part the actual Chinese people themselves were hardest hit by their own. This is a time when the world should come to the peoples aid by bringing their government officials and those controlling the purse string i.e Mr. KO the Chinese shadow government to justice or part with plenty of that yuan turned to cash. The G7 should be asking hey China you need to pay cash to all the countries affected due to intentional holding back real data.

12 ( +15 / -3 )

China and disinformation in the same line? Imagine my shock.

12 ( +17 / -5 )

“At first, I think there’s a certain amount of disbelief that goes on," he said. “I think that contributes, to some extent, to the lack of putting the foot on the gas pedal on some of the control measures that we know we need to do."

This was true of Xi, Trump, Abe, Johnson, Koike, and Burning Bush. What we can learn from this is to play it safe and take it seriously.

bass4funkToday 07:26 am JSTAmazing how China is able to BS the US msm that referring the virus to its country of origin as racist. And they bought into it hook, line and sinker. The Chinese must be laughing their heads off.

Viruses and flus are usually named after where they first manifested, appeared and developed. That is not racist, it's a reference to a starting point. There was the Spanish flu of 1918, Hong Kong flu of the late 60s, Russian flu of the 70s (I suffered that as a kid), and modern vaccines lately have immunized us from flus originating from Poland, South Africa and Australia.

The Chinese ain't laughing about this virus. It's a major nuisance for everybody. Calling it a 'Chinese' virus as a reference of origin isn't racist because these things can / will / do develop anywhere. OTOH, we're talking about Pompeo the Pompous Ass here. He, like his known racist boss - the bullying blubbering bigot boy who is not fit for any social groupings or diplomatic discussions, IS being racist with his talk. And the Trumpturd administration's racism is VERY well documented, explicit and obvious to all.

9 ( +12 / -3 )

None of this is productive and they continue to play their stupid petty games.

8 ( +14 / -6 )

Who could believe the Pompous Prattler?

7 ( +10 / -3 )

I’m not a fan of the current american administration and Pompeo as well but this time I fully agree with this joined statement from the G7.

My home in western europe is suffering and struggling because of the Chinese lies and the way they tried to hidden the truth to the rest of the world.

Their government is a typical communist dictatorship full of grey spots.

No wonder why they have the worldwide reputation to don’t be trusted.

They initiated all these sufferances due to their low hygiene and their sneaky dictatorship.

Summary and excerpts of the article IloveCoffee linked

https://www.globalresearch.ca/covid-19-further-evidence-virus-originated-us/5706078

1) US has 5 kinds of coronavirus. It is said to be the trunk. The Chinese has the branch strain.

2) Iran and Italy have different strains. The genome varieties of the virus in Iran and Italy have been sequenced and declared to be different than that of the Chinese.

3) E-cigarettes

A Taiwanese physician noted that in August of 2019 the US had a flurry of lung pneumonias or similar, which the Americans blamed on ‘vaping’ from e-cigarettes, but which, according to the scientist, the symptoms and conditions could not be explained by e-cigarettes.

He said he wrote to the US officials telling them he suspected those deaths were likely due to the coronavirus. He claims his warnings were ignored.

Immediately prior to that, the CDC totally shut down the US Military’s main bio-lab at Fort Detrick, Maryland, due to an absence of safeguards against pathogen leakages, issuing a complete “cease and desist” order to the military. It was immediately after this event that the ‘e-cigarette’ epidemic arose.

Comment

Need to look into why the military bio-warfare shut down.

Different versions of the virus possibly exists.

Scientists doubt it was the seafood market as do I.

6 ( +10 / -4 )

To support his nationalistic positions Pompeo has a history of distorting facts. In my mind the virus did originate in China. That the US decided not to heed the warnings provided by intelligence agencies and the medical communities gave the virus time to grow in the US. The Trump admin decided not to heed the early warnings and now with the economy at risk and millions of lives at risk the US is desperately playing catchup. By going after China, Pompeo is trying to shift blame away from the Trump admin. And in doing so he's pointing out how another 'other' group is responsible. He's riling up Trump followers, giving them an enemy to point to, a tactic used by despots throughout history in their attempts to further divide and conquer.

The CCP is spreading misinformation and lies.

Akie: Nope, not at all...amirite? (smirk)

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Why do we care where the virus originated, it has no citizenship and it doesn't care who the host should be. What we should have done was prepared for it's arrival, China delayed the spread and absorbed the costs of the lockdown for over two months while we spent time enjoying ourselves and denying its severity. Who is to blame but ourselves.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

...and the US government isn't? Pompeo and the rest of WH crew lost all credibility long ago, this virus had done nothing but expose them for the liars, hucksters and imposters that they are. Invalid CSRF

"willfully complicit in not only withholding vital information, but also deliberately covering up the true scope of the disaster unfolding in Wuhan. This is the direct cause of much of the misery we see throughout the world today.!" You have to ask if Trump would have behaved any differently if it had occured in the US. Due to his wasting 6 weeks' time and subsequent hamfisted response, the US is going to become the next Italy.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Pompeo has no right to talk about "disinformation", given that his WH until last week was saying the virus was no threat and no worse than the common cold, despite the facts. What's more, didn't the US just quietly lift some of the tariffs imposed on China, knowing full well they're going to need to bring in masks and respirators from China, as well as get info that China has been recording since the outbreak began and that can help?

Anything to deflect from your own disasters, I guess.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

Made in China

The WHO should just start calling these viruses China Virus 1. China Virus 2, China Virus 3 and so on.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Pompeo can say what he likes about the rest of the G7 agreeing with him about China's attempts at disinformation about Covid-19, but at the end of the day the G7 refused to issue a joint statement on the virus because of Pompeo's insistence on calling it the "Wuhan Flu". They wanted nothing to do with that kind of re-branding.

Not one the websites he cited is legitimate. They are all conspiracy websites.

These were not "lung pneumonias" (as opposed to stomach pneumonias?"). These people died due to toxic chemicals. The coronavirus is not new, just this latest strain, so if they'd had CoVid-19 they would have recognized it as such, excepting that none of them had the symptoms that go along with coronavirus.

*Scientists doubt it was the seafood market as do I***.**

This is the case because no one has said it was caused by seafood. Non-mammalian sea life can't contract or cause lung ailments. "Wet meat" markets are full of game meat and exotic meats that are either still alive or have been butchered in the open and allowed to sit out unrefrigerated in conditions that make auto shops look clean.

So yes, it is a Chinese originated disease which came out of China, that’s indisputable and irrefutable. It has absolutely nothing to do with the people being who they are racially,

Simply because something originates from somewhere orginally, I don't think we endlessly and gratuitously call something after it origin. It is factually correct that the virus originated in China, but to keep calling it out in such a gratuitous way highlights that it is foreign, ascribes blame to another country and by implication, their people.

Most of the world is grown up enough to call it "coronavirus" or "COVID-19", or even its new, flashier name. But only the schoolyard bullies in the White House call it the Chinese virus.

And I think they should also remember who is the largest holder of US government debt before provoking that beast further.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

it is a Chinese originated disease which came out of China, that’s indisputable and irrefutable.

No, it's disputable and refutable. It originated in China, it didn't originate by the Chinese.

Pointing out that the disease came from China is fact. Calling it a Chinese disease is inaccurate, and invites discrimination against Chinese, as can be seen by the discrimination against the Chinese for being Chinese.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

How ridiculous this all is.  Like childish name calling.  does it really matter where it began?  Not like the relevant governments deliberately did it.  Or that it is a result of their policies or their form of government.

@ Wesley

You have simply listed the first thing that came up on a google search for the Spanish Flu. Further reading indicates that the consensus is that it originated from US recruits at Fort Riley in Kansas.

The Chinese get to own this pandemic corona virus which probably started in one of those live wild meat markets and probably from bats. Those types of markets need to be banned. The Chinese authorities tried to hide the virus in the beginning and stopped people posting about it online.

In the beginning, Trump and his government gave much misinformation including saying it was no worse than the normal winter flu. The death rate for this pandemic is higher than the flu.

Trump has pulled his socks up but now suggesting it will be over by Easter.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

The Chinese central dictatorship get to own the virus not all the Chinese people. No hate crime against anyone isn't in my book of play. They also tried to prevent the info getting out.

Ah, desperate Pompeo, desperate country...... No wonder America has become the new epicentre of this virus...... Congratulations! America First!

By the way, is that true that this irrelevant so-called first world G7 foreign ministers held a meeting only to agreed that China was waging a "disinformation" campaign about the coronavirus pandemic.....??

This is beyond hilarious...... Is that all they can do, when their countries is being slaughtered by invisible bugs.....?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Pompeo is an idiot to be sure and I really doubt the nations he named condone the way the U.S. is handling this. However, as it is China, I don't believe anything they've said about the origin of the virus, that they have done anything about "wet" and exotic animal meat markets or that the numbers they have given for infected and numbers dead are accurate.

Given what is known about movements in and out of Hubei and Wuhan in particular before the quarantine, I just assume that the virus has spread throughout China, Tibet, Mongolia, North Korea and probably Central Asia via China.

That Pompeo made this public statement today and you heard it today doesn't mean he's only just become aware of the CCP's dishonesty today. It's not unreasonable to suggest that he, like any other rational person, has been aware of the CCP's history of dishonesty and corruption that has spanned generations.

bass4funk:

Who was the first country to name the virus in the beginning Wuhan virus? China

A fact which is quickly getting lost in all of this race-mongering. The CCP did that to put the blame on local officials and distance themselves from any responsibility for the virus. Which they then lied about, not just to the residents of their country but to the world. Now that it's their fault it's a global pandemic, they have to continue deflecting the blame elsewhere.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

There is no doubt that the virus emerged from Wuhan in China. Scientific facts. The whole world knows how the Chinese authorities tried to cover up the facts and lie. What's more, they launched a disinformation war and state-sponsored propaganda. The World Health Organization is also complicit in this global tragedy. Now China is playing the role of the saviour ,NOT the villain by sending medical equipment and doctors to Spain, Italy, Serbia. What a joke! Some test kits which were sent to Spain were DEFECTIVE. They obviously don't care about human lives. CHINA WILL NEVER BE TRUSTED. Full stop.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Some people still think of blaming China for their own avoidable crisis, such as “we didn’t know its severity, because China was suppressing the information of the virus from getting out, …” Common, China closed down the whole cities of millions population, and you think that’s not severe enough. Besides, WHO was also called in and warning has been issued. But, nothing was done to prevent the virus from coming into the countries in the West. Heck, shortage of medical supplies everywhere, hospitals do not have enough face masks even for their own staff and don’t forget the ventilators only God knows who would be entitled to it. Where was the test kit when we really needed one? Shortsightedness, reckless and disregard to the value of human life are causing all these crises in the West, thinking 2% or 3% death rate is so small and acceptable, but never thought that the whole economies would collapse. Trump the other day still talked about the crisis would be over by Easter, surely wishful thinking. Now, think again who is to blame, not ourselves?

The Spanish flu originated somewhere in northern China in late 1917 and swiftly moved to western Europe with the 140,000 Chinese laborers the French and British governments recruited to perform manual labor to free up troops for wartime duty.

We didn't know its severity, because China was suppressing the information of the virus from getting out, because like all dictatorships they were more concerned about their image than the welfare of the people. A bad image can lead to being ousted. Sick people just die. Dictatorships know which is more important to them.

Let's make it simple. There are multiple types of diseases that can come from a single country. COVID 19 is more than enough of a professional to identify the type of disease it is. We already KNOW where it originated from just like SARS... The fact is the CCP doesn't want to be held responsible for what it did to create this pandemic and will do anything to make it seem like they "shouldn't".

Calling it "China-Wuhan" or w/e is pointless. If you wanna stick it to the Chinese GOVERNMENT, then call it the CCP Virus since it's gets on their nerves being held responsible and being called out for how their ineptitude caused the world to be in the state it is today. The CCP wants everyone to believe that government control can do NO wrong. Remind them as much as possible that they're incorrect, and continuously point out their flaws no matter how much they try to deny it.

China has never Identified patient zero and given that information to the rest of the world!

China allowed citizens to move from Wuhan and also to continue to travel abroad knowing that there was an outbreak.

Information concerning the virus has not been forthcoming from China either. The virus that originated in China and the virulent aggressive nature of the virus in Italy seem to be a mutation.

The secrecy of the regime and a desire it has to hide many pieces of information do not allow us to trust China.

So yes, it is a Chinese originated disease which came out of China, that’s indisputable and irrefutable. It has absolutely nothing to do with the people being who they are racially, it has to do with culinary practices that they practice in certain markets and in Wuhan in particular where the virus originated should be scrutinized especially when you see the conditions of the animals sold in those markets. But China has a serious possibility of violence and people uprising if they believe their government is 100% responsible for this, therefore the Chinese need to go on the offensive and create a boogeymen and blame someone else for this outbreak, enter the US and by the way, let’s add to that a racial component to it, that’ll get the identity politics liberals and the media outraged and it’s working for China because we’re dumb and the Chinese know that and liberals bought it.

Look at the FACTS for your own.

I read the article you linked, and watched all of the Nathan Rich videos you posted.

Larry Romanoff has a long history of praising China and bashing the U.S. He's even blamed the Tiananmen Square Massacre on the U.S. He's basically a Baghdad Bob for the CCP.

Nathan Rich is very slick, but he practices the easiest, most effective lie: The lie of omission. He leaves out pertinent - even critical - information, such as the CCP's treatment of Wuhan whistle-blowers. He repeatedly refers to the hastily-built quarantine centers as "hospitals", echoing the CCP's propaganda. In the last video, he even admitted that he skewed his presentation to favor the conspiracy theory. Then moments later calls for more fact-based research. He also refuses to entertain even the possibility that the virus made its first animal-to-human transmission in a Chinese wet market. Perhaps you were swayed by the annoying background music?

Interesting background on him, though. From Scientology to the CCP. Something tells me there's more going on with him than his vlogging reveals.

I could go on, but I've wasted enough of my time reviewing your CCP propaganda. Perhaps you should look up facts (and research your sources) instead of soaking in confirmation bias.

PS: The CIA - a spy agency - lying, cheating, and stealing? Color me shocked! Pretty sure that's what they all do. Heck, his predecessor, Brennan, did all of those things to the American people and then lied about it under oath in front of Congress. Charged? Nah. He's still out there on Twitter.

White, rich, connected, top govt official rednecks would never be racist. Just because Chinese are yellow with kind of different eyes, doesn’t mean that they should hate God, war, McDonald’s and plastic surgery...right?

my Chinese friends love American culture, same as my Iranian friend. I advise them not to go to the southern states.

The Chinese ain't laughing about this virus. It's a major nuisance for everybody. Calling it a 'Chinese' virus as a reference of origin isn't racist because these things can / will / do develop anywhere.

Now one threw a fit about Ebola or Zika, SARS, West Nile, but now all of a sudden because China doesn’t want to take the heat, it’s now all of a sudden and with the PR dept. making the effort to shove the blame and to call it out and the location from where it came is now a racist thing to say? Boy do they have liberals brainwashed....

OTOH, we're talking about Pompeo the Pompous Ass here. He, like his known racist boss - the bullying blubbering bigot boy who is not fit for any social groupings or diplomatic discussions, IS being racist with his talk. And the Trumpturd administration's racism is VERY well documented, explicit and obvious to all

I have no idea what that was all about, but anyway, the real subject is, had Trump called the Chinese inferior or suggested that each Chinese is responsible for this virus, I get it, that was never said. Stop allowing the Chinese CCP to play you, that’s exactly what they want and they’re getting it and laughing behind you guys backs. Smh....

As if American spies in China didn't and don't know what is happening on the ground! Next America will be asking for compensation and then cancelling their debt to China. Pompeo is looking for a fight!

Now, this is enough, stop attacking CHINA, the proverd says the weak only attack the real powerful. Stop back-stabbing, spend yr important time to be honest and work hard like the Chinese and Asian people. They are also in yr country and owes the most of yr bond and try to help U. Have the corona virus thought u nothing ???.

Pointing out that the disease came from China is fact. Calling it a Chinese disease is inaccurate, and invites discrimination against Chinese, as can be seen by the discrimination against the Chinese for being Chinese.

So "Chinese virus" is not acceptable, but "German Measles", "Spanish Flu", "West Nile Virus" and "Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever" are okay, eh?

Simply because something originates from somewhere orginally, I don't think we endlessly and gratuitously call something after it origin.

We don’t call it the Far East Virus?

It is factually correct that the virus originated in China, but to keep calling it out in such a gratuitous way highlights that it is foreign, ascribes blame to another country and by implication, their people.

That’s utterly ridiculous. With all the pandemics in history that broke out worldwide we never ever called or attached a racial component to it. You liberals keep linking race to the virus, stop letting the Chinese CCP play you. It’s all and only about the origin where it came from, stop believe ing the Chinese hype.

Most of the world is grown up enough to call it "coronavirus" or "COVID-19", or even its new, flashier name. But only the schoolyard bullies in the White House call it the Chinese virus.

No, you’re just referring to where it came from and by the way, not everyone calls it COVID-19, some countries say “Corona, Coronavirus, CV, Chinese”

And I think they should also remember who is the largest holder of US government debt before provoking that beast further.

And let me remind you who’s the biggest buyer of Chinese everything. They too don’t want to provoke the US beast as well.

Blming someone else for your own problems is disgusting. They should be ashamed, but I know they won’t be. They are subhuman.

If one fights the virus with lies and stupidity, one will lose the fight.

Well, to be fair, he didn’t say “it will be over by Easter”, he said he hopes that it will be over by Easter and he would like to be re-open the country by Easter.

voiceofokinawa said "A Chinese Foreign Ministry official, on the other hand, had tweeted earlier that the U.S. military had brought the novel coronavirus to China. "

Really, which official, what did he say ? would you please tell us exactly his tweet ?

So what exactly is the "disinformation" he is talking about? This article just says that Pompeo accused China of disinformation - what is it? Give me an example of something China has said that isn't true? I can give you lots of examples of US govt. and CDC- can he give me an example of the Chinese govt?

Also, what conspiracy theory? The Chinese official literally asked a question. He made no claims. He asked about the data that CDC is not releasing, he asked about the US patient zero, and he asked the CDC to release the data. He said the virus MIGHT have come from the US. That is not a claim. It's not a conspiracy theory, it's a question, and it's a very valid question. There is tons of evidence that the virus MIGHT have originated from the US. Here is some: https://www.globalresearch.ca/covid-19-further-evidence-virus-originated-us/5706078 and it doesn't come from China either.

It's so obvious to anyone who doesn't have low-IQ that the Trump admin is trying to shift the focus from the incompetent way they handled this towards China. He praised China the first 2 months of this crisis, and then when it hit the US, the turned ballistic against China over night (source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5uNvE62zeg)

The argument for their China bashing hysteria is that they covered the virus for 2 weeks before their told the WHO. China claims they were conducting investigation to make sure this is a new virus before they sound the alarm, and that's why they arrested that doctor who released info, because it's against the law to release information on things that are under investigation. Once it was determined that it's a novel virus, they alarmed the WHO. This was back in early December. The US and Europe stood and watched China deal with the virus for over 2 months, and didn't do anything to prepare. Now you are telling me that if ONLY China were to alarm the world of the virus 2 week earlier back in December, this whole crisis would've been avoided? Is there anybody here whose IQ is low enough to believe this? They didn't act for 2 months, and now they claim the 2 weeks back in December is the reason for the crisis?

Let us also not forget who Mike Pompeo is. He is a former CEO director, and last year he openly said this: "I was the CIA director. We lied, we cheated, we stole. Hahaha" (source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPt-zXn05ac). Think twice before you trust a guy who openly says he cheated, lied and stole as a CIA director.

He is a comprehensive timeline of how China dealt with the virus: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kO5EXjFKE7U Look at the FACTS for your own.

This is a timeline of how the US dealt with H1N1 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJiKxV4rTCQ Compare the way the two countries reacted, and make up your own mind about who is lying and who is telling the truth.

And here is a "conspiracy theory" about the virus possibly coming from the US - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3J6zm6zgah0 based on evidence and facts. Watch it and make up your own mind.
