According to an Okinawan local newspaper, Ryukyu Shimpo, Putin referred to the new base construction in Henoko, Nago City, Okinawa, at the said forum.

Probably, he brought up the Henoko construction issue to exemplify how abnormally close Japan-U.S. military cooperation is because the base is being constructed in outright disregard of a strong local opposition spearheaded by the Okinawa governor.

So if the northern territories were returned to Japanese control, no one knows how they would be used against Russia, he might have thought. A very reasonable concern.

Cogito Ergo SumToday  08:02 pm JST

Russia is worried about its right to exercise the Monroe doctrine. It also feels it's been encircled by NATO from the Baltics and should Japan go ahead with the aegis ashore the encirclement would be complete. All this in total disregard of the Reykjavik promise of NATO not expanding further east from East Germany.

englisc aspyrgend,

I agree. My point is the difference between putting down an uprising and an invasion and the difference between Russia and China.

they invaded them once doesn’t justify a later invasion of an independent

"They" in this case are not the Chinese. The two dynasties mentioned are considered to be ruled by foreigners, non-Chinese who ruled China. I'll go one step ahead. Why are those dynasties then considered a part of Chinese history if they are not ruled by the Chinese? History is any period of a people's existence regardless whether the people ruled by themselves or are ruled by others. The Babylonian captivity is a period where the Jewish did not govern themselves. Would one say that is not considered a part of Jewish history?

Please find an example of a Chinese invasion of a foreign country? China has only invaded China. Throughout Chinese history, there were so many empires and kingdoms conquering each other and countries borders moving miles to the North and miles to the East. They attack their own but do not attack they neighbors. India and Vietnam were border skirmishes. The Korean War was MacArthur's disobedience that led to his firing. The Russians are different on the other hand.

invasion of an independent, culturally different people

I agree. And an invasion "by" an independent, culturally different people are the Mongols of the Yuan Dynasty and the Manchus of the Qing dynasty, not the Chinese. There are few examples of Chinese fighting and invading their neighbors. In the old days when they had power, they sat around drinking tea, admiring flowers on trees, burning pottery, and writing poetry. Now they sit around thinking ways of making money and possibly by ways of copying and stealing other's ideas and products, but I don't see them in the same vein as Russia.

ALmost, you got there ahead of me!

quercetum, because they invaded them once doesn’t justify a later invasion of an independent, culturally different people and then swamping them with immigrants to occupy their land and dispossess them in their own land. The Chinese have been overbearing imperialists throughout their history and they are no different today.

Invasion and occupation of Tibet by China 1950.

I am not sure about this. With the fall of the Qing dynasty, Tibet may have been de facto independent until 1950 but never officially an independent country. Any country desiring to succeed will have to struggle for independence unless that freedom is granted. Is the fight for independence an invasion by the ruling power?

Invasion and occupation of Britain over the American colonies.

Invasion and occupation of the North over the Confederate South.

Invasion and occupation of Australia over Papua New Guinea.

It seems you need to distinguish an invasion from an attempt to quell an uprising or a revolt. They aren't the same. The examples of China invading its neighbors are the Mongols in the Yuan dynasty and the Manchus in the Qing dynasty.

Putin and Russia are the big losers here. If they returned two of the islands, Japanese investment money and know-how would tsunami into the Russian Far East.

Perhaps the problem is that Putin and the other oligarchs can’t decide who gets what.

@smithinjapan

So, according to your opinion, aggression cancels out (or condones) aggression committed by other nations. It's like:

"Well, Japan used to go around doing it, so China's annexation of Tibet is A-OK!"

I don't get it.

It wasn't OK then and it's not OK now.

As for the Russians, when the U.S. annexes Nova Scotia, let me know. Until then, you're comparing apples to oranges.

Peter14: "Invasion and occupation of Tibet by China 1950."

So, 70 years ago, almost the same time that Japan had seized much of Asia... or is that suddenly too long ago. You got me on the Russia one, though. But Don't forget, the US not only allows it, but in fact supports it through Trump supporting Putin.

And Abe should tell Putin, "Russia's military cooperation with China concerns Japan".

President Putin could start by returning the sovereignty of the North Territories, masquerading as spoils of war to there rightful owners.

Try not taking over Crimea and attempting Ukraine and having your buddy control a wide swath of the South China Sea. What is a reasonable response for Japan to take toward you and your pal's actions?

well said

Good! The main point of the alliance in the post WWII era is to be a concern to Russia. Now China as well.
