Trump use to claim that this stuff wouldn't happen with a real leader in the WH. For once he is correct.

Chairman Kim is crossing Trump's red line again and again ...

Meanwhile Donald goes golfing again and again.

18 ( +27 / -9 )

I hope I don't wake up some day and see a mushroom cloud on my way to work.

14 ( +16 / -2 )

Two facts:

NK has nukes and ICBMs and will never, ever negotiate them away.

It's nobody's fault - there's no reason for finger-pointing.

Two possible resolutions:

Let them have it. It's not unthinkable; we're living with several nuclear powers. Of course, there are risks, particularly regarding precedent.

Invade NK to remove the Kim regime and allow for SK to absorb them. The problems here are so vast that no one's ever tried it, though most every recent US president has considered it.

It is a conundrum. I just wish the current US administration inspired more confidence.

10 ( +12 / -2 )

Been talking with NK for decades. Of course more dialog would help (as SK unification minister indicated in the link I posted) which I agree with.

Something needs to be done with Kim and hopefully (as stated above) it is done peacefully

9 ( +11 / -2 )

End result: many common people of various nations will be harmed & killed & injured, while politicians are safe & sound.

And the military-industrial complex which now controls the US will make billions more dollars in profits.

The warmongering despots on both sides need to sort it out between themselves and stop endangering us, the people, in their games.

I'm sure the people of Yemen, Syria, Libya, Vietnam, El Salvador, Chile and the like said exactly the same thing.

9 ( +12 / -3 )

In my opinion, there's no way that North Korea wants to attack the US. Pleeease. This is irrational fear-mongering.

8 ( +21 / -13 )

Trump said the United States will "take care of it." He told reporters: "It is a situation that we will handle."

Just say you have no idea what you're doing...

Sanctions and intimidation don't work, obviously. It would be time to think of something else, isn't it ?

Cuba is anti-nukes, and still in contact with North Korea. Just saying.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

Time to talk with NK.

Has been for years but......

7 ( +15 / -8 )

Oh, don't even come close to blaming this on Trump. It is not his fault at all.

Of course it's not. He didn't do anything to escalate things to the way they are recently. All that talk about fire and fury were just figments of our own imagination.

Just ask yourself. In the last year, with the new president, how many missiles have been launched by North Korea compared to the previous administration.

6 ( +10 / -4 )

Spot on. Kim has been firing off an increased number of rockets since the orange moron took office.

I think they took the message from Libya especially that giving up weapons of mass destruction is an open invitation to be bombed and that the US won't mess with nuclear countries, which is absurd but that has been the mindset since key nuclear and missile programs were accelerated under Kim Jong Il that are only coming to fruition today.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

US branding NK a terrorist country and now NK firing another missile. And South Korea firing missiles. And more sanctions from Japan, USA, etc.

So there will be real war & fighting.

End result: many common people of various nations will be harmed & killed & injured, while politicians are safe & sound.

5 ( +11 / -6 )

I know Trump saying they "will take care of it" sounds real real scarry. But Trump hasn't been able to take care of anything, so don't worry. In the US, still no tax reform, still have Obamacare, still no wall or infrastructure programs. The big issues he campaigned on: nothing. Don't worry. Trump is just a noisy nothing.

5 ( +11 / -6 )

Israel just test fired its “iron dome at sea” missiles yesterday. It has had wars and/or invaded all its neighbors. It has between 20-200 nuclear warheads and delivery systems. It illegally invaded Palestine and commits daily human rights abuses on Palestinians.

NK test fired a missile to develop its self defense capabilities. It has never invaded another country or occupied their land.

why only one is the devil?

5 ( +8 / -3 )

@Crazyjoe

Spot on. Kim has been firing off an increased number of rockets since the orange moron took office.

First, it was ‘rocket man’. Then it was ‘little rocket man’. What’s Trump’s next step in trash diplomacy? ‘Little, tubby rocket man’?

4 ( +11 / -7 )

"I really believe that it makes sense for North Korea to come to the table and to make a deal"

That's Trump from 3 weeks ago.

One of the few times he's on the ball.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Same comments, different day. Kim fires missile and it was Trump/Abe's finger on the trigger. I'm out of here.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

The best reaction to this is no reaction at all. "Don't just do something! Sit there!"

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Time to talk with NK.

Has been for years but......

Yeah, during all those years when NK didn't have an ICBM (maybe because they didn't felt like they needed to back then due to dialogue and diplomacy).

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Explain to me why Japan should let NK threaten Japan and shoot missiles across it.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

So, some people really believe this tiny Country wants to destroy the US and the world for real? Apparently some people are still naive like during the Bush age, and the fake mass destruction weapons narrative in Iraq. Sigh.

3 ( +10 / -7 )

The military industry of america are rubbing their hands

to the party. Disgusting !

3 ( +9 / -6 )

We are the most strongest country... They are very pore and they bearly can get missles to go far....

*Spoken like a true patriot.
3 ( +6 / -3 )

@EvilMonkey - not sure why you have more down votes than up. I agree with your post. If Japan did likewise (flew a missle over North Korean territory or even near NK for that matter China would go nuts! (as would NK).

Arrest warrant for Trump? GIve me a break!!

3 ( +6 / -3 )

A few question to those calling for war :

The north korean regime has been telling its citizens for decades that the US are preparing to invade, so do you understand that Trump is doing exactly what they want ?

Do you understand that north korean civilians are under constant propaganda, and already blame the US for their poor situation ? What do you think they will do in case of invasion ?

Trump talked about TOTALLY destroying North Korea. Are you ok with committing a genocide then ?

Trump hasn't invaded. He hasn't so much as fired a shot across the bow. All the actions the U.S and South Korea have conducted have been in South Korean territory

I suspect they would fight back hard, just like the nationals of any country which is invaded. Many would also flee in both directions.

Nobody would be ok with it, which is why such a severe action will never be committed by the U.S unless the U.S or its allies are attacked with nuclear weapons. Then the North Koreans deserve everything coming to them.
3 ( +6 / -3 )

And once again, Trump will "handle it" with zero indication of how, meaning he has absolutely no plan. His speeches today will be filled with "believe me"s and "trust me"s, and "you're going to love it," and "like you've never seen"s a plenty!

Those are President Trumps words, Mattis is the one with the plans and rest assured he has a plan.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

So when are we going to see these missiles shot down, only when it is directly above Japan’s airspace?

2 ( +11 / -9 )

Not a fan of Trump here but this situation is a result of this problem being ignored and improperly handled for decades. A sober and interesting article from South Korea's English press, lacking the sensationalism. In this article the reunification minister expresses hope for dialog.

http://english.yonhapnews.co.kr/northkorea/2017/11/28/78/0401000000AEN20171128010651315F.html

On the other hand South Korea conducted a missile firing drill in response. I would imagine that in spite of the reunification minister's comments South Korea is running out of patience and if provoked much further will end up reacting to this.

I doubt North Korea's military is as capable as portrayed, however a war on the Korean peninsula still would have horrible consequences.

Kim needs to be stopped. One can only hope this can be done without an actual full scale war.

2 ( +12 / -10 )

Oh, don't even come close to blaming this on Trump. It is not his fault at all.

Kim's father raised him with this mindset.

2 ( +17 / -15 )

Great, first China became a nuclear power and now NK, right under Uncle Sam's nose, and for decades they simply haven't got a clue what to do. Bravo

Just admit failure and let China feed the starving NK people. There's no way to undo the development now

2 ( +8 / -6 )

Now is the time for talking. The warmongering despots on both sides need to sort it out between themselves and stop endangering us, the people, in their games.

At the very least there should be an international arrest warrant for Kim and Trump.

2 ( +11 / -9 )

Why are they doing it?

If you study NK their leaders have been following the same path toward unification for a long time. Step 1 has been to force or intimidate the US out of SK.

For awhile that path has been nuclear.

But how long can NK shoot rockets over or around Japan without repercussions?

2 ( +6 / -4 )

Did Abe try to revise the constituion during the previous American presidents' administrations as well?

2 ( +4 / -2 )

this is like watching a rerun of a tv show from the 1980s when china became nuclear capable. the us, japan and europe all feared that nuclear war would break out. the same players also demanded that china stop or else...

and here we are in 2017 with a much smaller country doing the same thing. but now unfortunately we have unstable leadership in the us. let's cross our fingers that his generals can talk him out of pulling the trigger.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

*Has anyone ever actually tried diplomatically reaching an agreement with NK, instead of bombarding them and their people with embargoes and threats about 'toeing the line'? *

Yes, during the six-nations talks up to 2009, which produced an agreement that Japan scuppered by refusing to cooperate until progress was made on the abduction issue.

2 ( +6 / -4 )

If I were such a poor leader of a poor country, I would take some lessons from South Korea and ask for pointers, not create more enemies.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Looking at the picture above, that missile certainly did fly high, right over the sun!

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Well radio signals picked up last night weren't nk truckies playing with their CB radio after all, who would have thought!

Perso I see this as just 'another' test, nothing more/less, very much in line with mind games the us, their allies and nk have been playing for a while now.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Abe is a simpleton to believe that maximum pressure will make NK change. Does Abe realize that by changing the peace constitution, his pressure to NK is already maximized ? Japan must play a positive role in dealing the situation and make a public statement that no war in North East Asia is allowed. Abe must break the ice to start talk. Talking is the only way to reduce the tension and eventually find a peaceful solution.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Good luck with that, FizzBit.

Exactly why I bring Cambodia up.

Everyone loves to blame old-school colonizers... And ignore the reality that all it takes is a few locals to turn thier country into an evil-ass nightmare.

Have fun screwing everyone over while you "look" for a culprit. Enjoy your sweet life tonight while all but a few North Koreans live in hell. Cheers.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Toasted HereticNov. 29 11:57 pm JSTThose calling for a war, or the DPRK to be destroyed, nuked or whatever form of genocide they prefer?

Do you live in this region?

Will you be enlisting?

Are you ready to take in the hundreds of thousands, if not millions of refugees?

> And if no action is taken, and North Korea is allowed to unify the Korean Peninsula under their control, will you take the responsibility for 51 million South Koreans? And if North Korea intentionally or unintentionally fires an ICBM that kills people, whether in Japan or the US, will you take the responsibility? Will you take the responsibility for all the North Korean civilians who will suffer and perish from malnutrition and disease because they have to live under this "Military First" policy?

The problem with folks like this is that they actually believe that all the world's suffering is because of Trump and his allies. They refuse to accept that places like North Korea could possibly have been a totalitarian nightmare long before the current political climate. They believe that people are only trying to escape NK because they are afraid Donald Trump is going to drop bombs on them, and not at all because they are starving by the millions at the hands of their own Great Leader. We all talk about NK brainwashing their citizens, but they've done it to quite a few people outside their country too.

Keep talking about 'are you going to enlist to go fight there'. I have served there and I can tell you it was exactly the same 25 years ago and something needs to be done. The reason it's gotten as bad as it has is precisely because no one has ever stood up to the Kims. It has been nothing but capitulation for decades and this current situation is what we have to show for it.

The DPRK didn't suddenly build nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles overnight because Trump took office. They've wanted to destroy the 'evil' US and our allies for decades and Kim thinks he is finally going to have a way to do it. Anyone who believes anything else is delusional. Do I want a war to break out in Asia, in the backyard of the home of many of my best friends? OF COURSE NOT. I would love nothing more than for Kim Jung Un to suddenly come to his senses and ditch his insane ambitions for domination. Unfortunately, Kim Jung Un is steering this ship right toward that destination.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Those calling for a war, or the DPRK to be destroyed, nuked or whatever form of genocide they prefer?

Do you live in this region?

Will you be enlisting?

Are you ready to take in the hundreds of thousands, if not millions of refugees?

And for those opposing war and through inaction allowing unification of Korea under DPRK regime, are you willing to take responsibility for the democide of former South Koreans absorbed in the unification who refuses to accept DPRK regime or disagrees with DPRK policies?

Look at the actions of the communists after they took over North Korea in 1945, China in 1949 and Vietnam in 1975.

Rudolph J. Rummel, Professor of Political Science, Univ. of Hawaii, coined the word "democide" and "mortacide", started his career as a pacifist but changed his views after research of communist democides/mortacides.

In response to those who say war is wrong, he asks: "What is right about the deaths, murders, miserable slavery, and total loss of human rights that 22 million people are suffering under Kim? What is wrong about risking lives to save the lives and promote human rights and security for 22 million? Can there be a greater case for a just war, if it comes to that? Does not the sheer human cost of letting Kim to continue to enslave North Koreas as he does far exceed the cost of war?"

2 ( +4 / -2 )

You realize you are the only one talking about unification of Korea under the DPRK, right ?

Unfortunately, that's where you are wrong. Kim Jung Un's ultimate goal is known as his 'final victory', which is reunification of the two Koreas under DPRK rule. It's not just fear-mongering, it is what he actually wants to accomplish.

This kind of thinking worked wonder in Irak, remember ?

This is a bad comparison. In Iraq, while it was no paradise, the overall conditions and infrastructure were decent, and arguably, even better than after we got involved. In NK, just about anyone outside of the government and military are diseased and starving (and as the recent defector showed, even military personnel are sick), a direct result of Kim Jung Un's military ambitions. Can you honestly say that the North Korean people wouldn't be better off without a Kim in charge?

2 ( +3 / -1 )

And once again, Trump will "handle it" with zero indication of how, meaning he has absolutely no plan. His speeches today will be filled with "believe me"s and "trust me"s, and "you're going to love it," and "like you've never seen"s a plenty!

There is so much beauty, and these men want to risk destroying it all.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Trump hasn't invaded. He hasn't so much as fired a shot across the bow. All the actions the U.S and South Korea have conducted have been in South Korean territory

And talking of "fire and fury" or "totally destroying" them does fuel north korean propaganda (which is my point) .

I suspect they would fight back hard, just like the nationals of any country which is invaded. Many would also flee in both directions.

And then americans would cry because they created a second Afghanistan, right ?

Nobody would be ok with it

Trump seems pretty ok with it...

Then the North Koreans deserve everything coming to them.

So all civilians have to pay for something on which they have no control ?

1 ( +4 / -3 )

The US has taken many refugees and now millions of illegals, Toasted Heretic.

And gave up 50,000 lives for South Vietnam.

Do you prefer North Koreans to die trying to escape or die from worms and other health problems?

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Nobody calling for war lives here or in the region, then?

Nobody willing to enlist?

Nobody ready to make room for the refugees?

Very telling. The armchair generals and other assorted cowards, pushing for a conflict in Asia while they watch it on their telly screens and monitors from thousands of miles away.

And like the Japanese and people of Vietnam, the Koreans will be subject to the brutalities of a rogue nation desperate yet again, to kill Asian people.

There's no doubt Kim is detrimental to the health of the people of DPRK. But don't kid yourself that the Trump junta cares about them.

I love how you continually ignore my comments that I actually have served on the Korean peninsula and have first hand experience. But I'm afraid that I'm 8 to 15 years too old (depending on the branch) to re-enlist though. I suppose that by your logic that makes me a coward.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Diplomacy has got to work. DPRK has a chip in the big game now with yesterdays launch. They can hit the U.S. Mainland according to all the experts. Maybe now its mission accomplished for the DPRK. Just maybe DPRK leadership will go back to taking care of the people. Maybe just my wishful thinking.

If war breaks out in Korea. That is it for the region. The real question is now. How are they going to test the payloads now that the test site has tired mountain syndrome? The DPRK may just blast radiation all over the region with its next underground test. This is my biggest fear. Please diplomacy before this really is out of hand. We have been very lucky thus far with accidents or stray missile or missile parts landing in Shinjuku during rush hour. Seriously think about it.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

The people of the DPRK are suffering enough, with one madman in charge.

They don't need all out destruction to wrest them free of their lives.

And American military (serving or otherwise) cannot dictate to the rest of us. Just like the North Koreans cannot.

There's more people involved than just Americans.

History has shown that diplomacy does not work with North Korea. Aid funds are used to build weapons. Aid food is used to feed the military. All the while, you would rather see millions continue to starve, as they have for decades, than anyone risk doing anything about it. I see.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Yes yes, we ALL HOPE that diplomacy will work. But since NK is not prepared to "talk" and are hell bent on pursuing their nuclear and missile program, all the while constantly announcing how they intend to "nuke" the United States, time is running short. Only sanctions, if effective, and a real fear of US military capabilities on the part of NK can stop where all this is headed.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

The people of the DPRK are suffering enough, with one madman in charge.

They don't need all out destruction to wrest them free of their lives.

Diplomacy has got to work.

The only kind of "diplomacy" that will work for NK  is US/UN going to Pyongyang, having dialog leading to appeasement and agreeing to DPRK's peace treaty terms. That means U.S. military pullout, surrendering SK to NK and agreeing to unification under DPRK regime.

DPRK leadership will go back to taking care of the people. Maybe just my wishful thinking.

Go back to taking care of their people as they have for the past 70 years? Kim is continuing the democide/mortacide policy. Why would you think he would change?  With a unified Korea under DPRK regime, the DPRK will eliminate any former SK people who refuses to accept DPRK government or support their policies. Look what the purges the communists did after taking over North Korea in 1945, China in 1949 and Vietnam in 1975.

Is that what you folks really see as the preferred "peaceful solution"?? I don't think the SK people or anyone with human rights conscious wants this kind of solution.

While we're all being distracted with the NK situation, keep your eye on China and what they intend to do to Taiwan in 2020 or thereabouts. That's where the real war will begin.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Another action by NK in defiance of the global community that takes us one step further towards armed conflict. One would think we could "talk" this out, but as long as NK continues to maintain their position that their nuclear and missile development program is "NOT NEGOTIABLE" there exists nothing to talk about. China has made some efforts but are still keeping NK alive. Until they cut their trade and support for NK completely, NK will never be prepared to "talk" and put a stop to their program.

0 ( +11 / -11 )

China, calling China. And Russia.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

There's nothing we can do about it. There's been nothing we can do for decades.

Kim is not interested in talking and military action against his regime is out of the question because of the huge number of deaths that would entail. 10 years from now, 20 years from now, we will all still be here typing the same type of comments as Kim does yet another launch. There will never be a war of any kind with NK and life will always go on as normal.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Get's pissed off about NK firing missiles. Fires missiles in protest of NK firing missiles...

Seriously, you can't make this stuff up! Our world leaders are perpetually engaging in intercontinental peeing contests..! After WWII, you would think politicians want to rely more on dialogue. Oh wait... that's right - they stand to profit greatly from it...

Has anyone ever actually tried diplomatically reaching an agreement with NK, instead of bombarding them and their people with embargoes and threats about 'toeing the line'? Because only Uncle Sam (the only user ever of WMD's on civilians) and his BFF's can have weapons, right..?

Of course not. Because the military industrial complex has more sway in the world now than anything else. Expect more goading and fear-mongering. This thing is obviously going to war. The US military obviously has too many war machines and personnel sitting idle for too long...

0 ( +1 / -1 )

North Korea demonstrated restraint for two months but what did the US do during that period? Sent three aircraft carriers into the area to hold war games and then put North Korea back on the list of sponsors of terrorism. It is hardly surprising that North Korea lost its patience.

0 ( +8 / -8 )

One can only imagine the howls of protest that North Korea would send up if Japan decided that it was going to in turn conduct a ballistic missile test that overflew North Korean Territory or dropped close to NK in the Sea of Japan.

Something tells me that Neither China nor Russia would sit idly by if Japan decided to begin testing nuclear capable delivery systems and firing them westward.

If China doesn't begin to exert maximum pressure on NK to stop this, then they will keep going and upping the ante until a much larger event (such as war) stops them. Better to avoid this now than later.

0 ( +4 / -4 )

And so it continues. Will be interesting to see the Chinese response. Facts on the ground suggest China is not happy (recently closing the bridge, closing down flights) but is it all a ruse? Time will tell.

This gains North Korea nothing in reality. Obviously they will have a weapon to target the U.S but attempt to use it and firstly its likely to be shot down by one of 3 defensive layers and secondly, if it succeeds, the result is many millions of dead North Koreans and potentially just as many South Koreans and Japanese in retaliation.

I have no doubt Trump will pull the trigger if a missile lands on U.S soil. He has no choice.

All the while it further encourages South Korea and Japan to beef up their offensive and defensive weapons with North Korea as the fall guy, but in reality, also aimed at having some sort of protection against China and Russia as well. Although its unlikely to work. Lining the pockets of Raytheon, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. Trump is pleased.

Sanctions will remain, even hardened further.

Expect to see more dead North Koreans turning up Japanese shores.

North Koreans think they need nukes, but the reality is they could achieve the same outcome of self defense by maintaining and enlarging their very considerable conventional force. Any attack under those conditions by South Korea or the U.S will be repelled by Chinese involvement. If only they could see that.

Old man, you cannot even take care of your own people and territory (Puerto Rico) ... why is FEMA handing out government contracts to dubious companies??

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Most bloggers here is too young or too ignorant (elsewise they would be banging down NK's doors) to understand the dynamics that allowed Cambodia to do what it did to itself or how totalitarianism divides and conquers, rules through fear, money, and pain. The Trumpettes and the bleeding hearts love what the USA is doing: nothing. Status quo. Trump pulls up his underwear just as high as the CCP says, nothing new there... Just so long as he can cut corporate taxes. Sad, really. There is nothing to be gained from dialogue but the continued enslavement of 25 million people. But sacred lamb Trump, the trumpettes, and all the "let's talk while NK works on bombing us" types don't care so long as they get cheap labor from the CCP. F your world. Free North Korea.

Once the leader kim is dead then it should be normal. Got yer squirly gun there, pardner? Jeez... if NK is attacked Japan will be eliminated... my friends and loved ones wiped out. THINK before you start spouting that sort of rubbish.

Right now I don't think that Kim is spoiling for a war, like he said he wants to join the nuclear club to guarantee no interference, etc from nuclear powers.

Look at his recent missile launcher aimed away from mainland Japan as previous ones didn't go down well.

Not defending him but so far he threatened no one and Trump is not helping upping the ante every chance he gets.

Time to talk with NK.

Now is the time for talking

Time to talk with NK?! Where have you all been?  UN, US, Japan, et al have been trying to talk to NK for decades and NK was non-responsive.  Only when NK has fully developed their nuclear weapons and missiles have they responded....... with test blasts and firings.  This is their way of talking?

"I really believe that it makes sense for North Korea to come to the table and to make a deal"

That's Trump from 3 weeks ago.

And NK's response?  Another missile firing.

Of course more dialog would help..

We've tried peaceful dialog, then verbal threats, then sanctions after sanctions (short of oil embargo and blockade), tried to get China and Russia to apply pressure.  Result:  nothing.  And now this latest missile firing.

What else is there?  Maybe going to Pyongyong and begin dialog with, "Okay, we give up and cancel all sanctions and remove NK from the Terrorist List.   We agree to (1) withdraw all US and SK military forces from Korean Peninsula; (2) agree to peace treaty terms whereby US and SK surrender to NK;  (3) agree to recognize DPRK as the official government of all Korea.  In return, we beg you not to test anymore nuclear devices and fire any more missiles or threaten war."

Yeah right, you leftists would love to see SK sovereignty and freedom sacrificed so there will be no more threats of destruction and "life goes on as normal".  You would love to see DPRK triumph and get what they want through nuclear and missile intimidations.

In my opinion, there's no way that North Korea wants to attack the US. Pleeease. This is irrational fear-mongering.

Agree.

Time to talk with NK.

Has been for years but......

Not true. Talk and broken promises would be accurate.

Now is the time for talking. The warmongering despots on both sides need to sort it out between themselves and stop endangering us, the people, in their games.

Well technically, only one is a warmonger and only one is a despot. Just sayin.

With the US and the EU neocons, neolibrals and the MIC have gone full out death and destruction hegemony, I think every country today has a right to devolpe counter measures to this. Maybe Kim can finally get an equal Central Bank deal and join the club.

IMO, anyone who thinks Kim doesn't have this right has very limited understand of what has been happing in Africa, South America and the Middle East over the last 70+ years. But if it REALLY makes you feel good today, we accept your Trump comments and limited knowledge.

"So what are people living in Japanese cities supposed to do? Just wait until they are hit with a thermonuclear missile strike and then do "duck and cover"?."

Yes. That is exactly what we should do. Except for the duck and cover part; you'll look much cooler standing upright with sunglasses on as you flip Kim the bird.

@extanker

Kim Jung Un's ultimate goal is known as his 'final victory', which is reunification of the two Koreas under DPRK rule.

I do know that, what I'm protesting are people here saying that if you are against war, then you're ok with the unification under the DPRK. Which nobody here is asking for.

This is a bad comparison.

Talking about starting a war in a country to free its people, that seems pretty similar to me.

Can you honestly say that the North Korean people wouldn't be better off without a Kim in charge?

I totally agree. But they won't be better if they're dead.

Once again, even if the situation in NK was caused by the regime, people there BELIEVE it is because of the US. It is unlikely that they would welcome a "liberation". On the contrary, I'm expecting mass suicide just like in Okinawa during WW2. And that's why, although I would love to see an end to the Kim dinasty and a unified Korea under a democratic rule, I don't think war would be a viable solution.

It was shot from from west coast of N. Korea to up toward Japan and dropped in the sea between Korea and Japan. Aomori Prefecture was close. I wonder if AEGIS ASHORE PAC3 worked to destroy this new ICBM.

Japan seems reluctant to follow Trump wish.

N Korea launches intercontinental missile; Trump says U.S. will 'take care of it'

Trump is starting to remind me of Abe. They both talk. They both pledge. But neither does JACK about anything. These 2 couldn't find their butts with both hands.

-2 ( +13 / -15 )

going by the pic little kim is half man half car only has one hand and thinks it looks tough to squint, lets all calm down.

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

Unlike all the other previous presidents and prime ministers who did soooo much to stop the North's nuke program. Today's incident is the culmination of many years of failed "engagement" and "accommodation" policies.

No. it wasn't failed "engagement" and "accommodation" policies with NK. It was so with China.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Two possible resolutions:

1.  Let them have it. It's not unthinkable; we're living with several nuclear powers. Of course, there are risks, particularly regarding precedent.

2.  Invade NK to remove the Kim regime and allow for SK to absorb them. The problems here are so vast that no one's ever tried it, though most every recent US president has considered it.

It is a conundrum. I just wish the current US administration inspired more confidence.

@Luguna, et al, you all forgot or neglected to mention the third possible resolution:

3.  Peace talks where UN and U.S. to agree to a peace treaty whereby U.S. withdraws its military forces from the Peninsula, SK agrees to surrender to NK and agree to unification under DPRK regime, and UN/U.S. recognition of DPRK as the official government of ALL Korea.

This is what Kim and his predecessors have been demanding for decades.  Now Kim has the nuclear/missile capability power not available before, to force that resolution.  Is this the preferred resolution you all really want?

I hear Pyongyang is beautiful this time of year!

that allowed Cambodia to do what it did to itself

To itself?

Not exactly sure what you mean here, but if you're talking Khmer Rouge, then you might want to read up on French Colonialism after WW II and the Vietnam war. This disgusting history could have been avoided if the Presidents "handlers" would have listened to Arthur Hale of the U.S. Information Agency in 1945.

The US, the British and the French are totally responsible for destabilizing this region, including Cambodia. Something Kim Jong-un is trying to prevent, IMO.

One more thing, does anyone find it odd that Kim Jong-un's name is not mentioned once in the AP "news" article? Not even Kim.

Hmmmm, could this be propaganda?

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Those calling for a war, or the DPRK to be destroyed, nuked or whatever form of genocide they prefer?

Do you live in this region?

Will you be enlisting?

Are you ready to take in the hundreds of thousands, if not millions of refugees?

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

This is a non-issue, anyway. The whole situation is a product of existing nuclear powers being hypocrites and denying NK the right to develop the same level of military power they have.

Either get rid of your own stockpile of nuclear weapons before preaching to others, or shut up and deal with it. While we're at it, stop invading other countries whenever you please and building military bases all around the world.

Ask yourself how many international conflicts and deaths occurred as a result of North Korea's actions in the past 50 years, then ask yourself the same about the USA, and it's easy to see who the real threat to the world is.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

And while we're at it, remind me which country is the only one to ever use nuclear weapons in actual combat. Hint: it's not North Korea.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Soon, there's going to be folks on here spouting all sort of suggestions short of dialogue. I'd like to kindly request you to display a desire to head to the frontline first before sharing disastrous opinions.

Time to talk with NK

Best and most sensible comment I've read thus far.

Kansas seems like the safest bet in the US. And Hokkaido in Japan.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

@OssanAmerica, Halwick

You realize you are the only one talking about unification of Korea under the DPRK, right ? Nobody is saying that nothing should be done either.

Anti-war people here are concerned about civilians on both sides and on the repercussions on the hole region. Things that you seem to be putting aside.

Ossan, great quote, but in case of a war in North Korea, who do you think will die ?

Does not the sheer human cost of letting Kim to continue to enslave North Koreas as he does far exceed the cost of war?

This kind of thinking worked wonder in Irak, remember ?

At least if you start another war with this kind of justification, this time don't call yourself the "good guys", ok ?

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

The people of the DPRK are suffering enough, with one madman in charge.

They don't need all out destruction to wrest them free of their lives.

And American military (serving or otherwise) cannot dictate to the rest of us. Just like the North Koreans cannot.

There's more people involved than just Americans.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Time to talk with NK.

-4 ( +12 / -16 )

But neither does JACK about anything.

Unlike all the other previous presidents and prime ministers who did soooo much to stop the North's nuke program. Today's incident is the culmination of many years of failed "engagement" and "accommodation" policies.

I predicted this 15 years ago. Total isolation would have worked then, but it's too late now. The die is cast.

My Japanese relatives can come over to the US. This is getting much too close.

-6 ( +13 / -19 )

Take him out Donny! The time has come!

-6 ( +6 / -12 )

Trump is tooo worried about cutting Korea off on stuff. Sorry but once the U.S does attack Korea its game over for all of them. U seen what happond to Syria with 58 missles in a few mins. We are the most strongest country. S. Korea is sceard of the North. Trump just needs to grow some and take action instead of worrying about money. Once the leader kim is dead then it should be normal. They are veryyy pore and they bearly can get missles to go far so really they are NOT a threat to the U.S cause we will make korea vanish to dust

-7 ( +2 / -9 )

So what are people living in Japanese cities supposed to do? Just wait until they are hit with a thermonuclear missile strike and then do "duck and cover"? I bet lots of foreigners and rich Japanese are already looking at flights away from this region...

-7 ( +3 / -10 )

If Japan built its own atomic bomb, all problems would be solved.

Japan would have her toy, north korea would have her toy, and everyone would be happy.

-7 ( +2 / -9 )

There was nothing to talk about with NK 2 months ago and there’s even less after today. NK’s fate is sealed and it will come to military action. It’s for the best that this belligerent terrorist nation is eliminated

-8 ( +6 / -14 )

Kim is in need of a diet and a new hairdo and then maybe he would get over his personal problems.

I'm NOT KIDDING.
