kohakuebisu,

Yeah but in addition to income tax there are resident tax, health "insurance" that are also directly tied to ones income.

Japanese have LONG been maxed out tax wise, but the ldp etc are loath to any self discipline so they wont cut spending or cut waste & another biggie they will NOT cut legal corruption.

Saiko

That would be possible, but the rich pay the most, so a five-year tax amnesty as in your plan would help them more than everyone else. Most tax cuts, like Trump's, overwhelmingly or exclusively benefit the wealthy. For all the moaning, ordinary Japanese people do not pay much income tax relative to the public services they receive. Hence the huge ongoing deficit building up a huge national debt.

If you wanted to weaken the yen to 150 to the USD, the best way for ordinary people would be universal basic income. Just give everyone say 40,000 a month no questions asked. Include kids if you want the birth rate up.

Urgh....I can't believe what I'm reading. More taxes, more silly fees. Just when I thought the Japan departure tax was idiotic, they know want to introduce a forest tax...unbelievable. Good on them for taxing cigarettes more, but how about you SANITIZE THE GOVERNMENT ON WASTEFUL SPENDING BEFORE RAISING TAXES?! Meanwhile the Jgov't is dishing out billions of yen to developing countries to combat poverty while their own people suffer here. Amateurs they are.

SaikoPhysco - Because unless you are an exporter, a weaker yen will mean higher prices for everyone else.

In all actuality why do the even bother to charge taxes... its not like the amount they charge comes anywhere near the amount of money the Government spends. Japan is now, in U.S. Dollar Terms, $11 Trillion in Debt. I say give everybody a 5 year tax amnesty and just tack it on to the current debt. Really... do you think Japan is ever going to pay down its National Debt... believe me, no they will not. So why not just keep printing Yen until the Yen starts to finally weaken down to around Y150 to the dollar. That will make the exporters happy and the Government does definitely want a weaker yen. Kill two birds with one stone.

SaikoP,

What you just wrote is absolutely BONKERS!!!

BUT at the same time makes PERFECT SENSE.

So bizarre is the Japan we currently live in!!!

They should double the tax on cigarettes. I believe it's still very cheap compared to other developed countries.

It's taking them 4 years to raise the tax on a pack of cigarettes by 60 yen? Why not do it in a single go? It's not going to hurt many people very much.

A Forrest tax? Because so many people visit the Forrest? Will it be used to plant more Alergy inducing trees. Can't the selling of timber sustain the forests? Call it a fleece tax. Next there will be Mall tax,

Anyone with 8.5 million yen as a single salary without dependent kids under 22 is not "poor". They mightn't be rich, but they certainly aren't poor. Compared to what Trump is doing, changing income tax so that these people pay slightly more and others with less pay slightly less is positively Scandanavian.

The big tax on the poor is the consumption tax, who rise seems inevitable now.

The Olympics and the maglev are proof enough that "bridges to nowhere" are still being built, but as the article says, construction is now dwarfed by social welfare spending. That is the elephant in the room. The government is closing in on one in three over 65 with nothing but IOUs in the bank.

income tax reform = euphemism for ripping you off more of your money

@MarkX - They just don't get it do they!

They get it alright! It's reverse Robin Hood. Take from the poor and give to the rich. TIJ!

They just don't get it do they! They raise taxes and promise to try and get companies to raise salaries, which never happens. So the average Taro Suzuki gets taxed more, while making the same salary, with no hope of a raise, and then they wonder why people are not spending more and the economy is stuck without any real growth! Oh, and don't forget next years 2% sales tax increase, that is the cherry on the cake. And what they hell is a forest tax, and which if Abe's buddies will this benefit?
