Tit for tat?

As long as peace is kept it’s all good

Russia has WMDs and if Russian territory were violated then they would be used-Japan knows this this nothing will be done except protests and ambassador recalls, at the worst

If Japan wants the islands back, and they are their islands, now would be the ideal time to move in for them. They will only get them back by force.

While Russia is indeed tied down in Ukraine, they still have an army brigade defending the Kuriles with air bases and more air power available in Kamchatka. Japan doesn't even begin to have the amphibious lift and power projection capabilites to have the slightest chance of taking those islands back. Everyone here knows I have the highest regard for the JMSDF. Their training and equipment are second to none but their capabilities in certain areas have always been restricted The JMSDF may be one of the very best ASW navies in the world with a submarines second only to US and UK nuclear powered subs in terms of sophistication and quietness, Japan just does not have the ability to move a brigade size force across the ocean, make an opposed landing on an enemy shoreline against an enemy that has a brigade sized defending force complete with anti ship and anti aircraft missiles, and enough logistics support to make the landing stick.

They can't because of paragraph 1 of Article 9 that prohibits the use of military force to settle territorial disputes. Looks to me like Japan should have amended the wording some time ago.

The US considers the 4 islands to be "Japanese territory under Russian administration ie; occupation) as they were stolen by the USSR and kept by Russia.

The dispute has prevented the two sides from ever formally signing a peace treaty to end the war.

And technically Russia isn't the only country that still at war with Japan.

Please list which countries are still at war with Japan besides Russia.

Historically, these islands belong neither to Russia nor Japan, but to the Ainu. And as long as at least one Ainu is alive in the world, we will have the right to this territory.

That's what long time Japanese nationalistic LDP govts' misleading political propagandas has caused, some fanatics think they can get whatever they claimed and whatever want!

Tokyo lodged a protest with Moscow over exercises conducted by Russia's Pacific Fleet near the disputed islands.

What do they protesting for? That was not your islands and not your business. The entire Japan were under US military occupation for 78 years on land,at sea,in the air. Why LDP not protesting for the own interests of your people's frustration. Oh yes, the LDP is a foreign element occupying the politics of this nation!

These days Putin/Russia bans everyone or imprisons them for long terms for anyone they don't like.

Funny people those Russians. A week after the exercises / mass inspection which the Russian Ministry of Defense said "confirmed the high readiness of the forces to repel the aggression of a possible enemy from the ocean and sea." the commander of the Russian Pacific Fleet resigned or was fired depending on which news source you read. He will now head a new organization managing centers for military training and patriotic education, which are slated to open in 11 Russian regions and Ukraine’s illegally annexed Donetsk.

Well, at least he didn't fall out of a window.

So, the prosecutors consider this group is creating a negative impression of Russia?

Seems Putin and his cronies are doing an excellent job of this even without outside help.

Definitely WWIII not needed over these rocks either!

FYI - 49 Nations signed the sept 8 , 1951 peace treaty in San Francisco however italy and China and Taiwan wasn't invited and then there's other places that should be Nations but not recognized as so , or Don't exist anymore

Don't forget Russia either

The Soviet Union really shouldn't have been acknowledged as part of the alliance through the whole war. Imagine how many internet commentators waving the Potsdam Declaration would now be silent without that justification for theft.

What political or history basis that requires the Soviet Union or the Federation of Russia to return those four Kuriles back to Japan?

The Yalta Conference in Russia,1945 hosted by Churchill, Roosevelt, Stalin or the three big brothers agreed the Soviet Union to declare war on Japan soon after the capitulation of Germany. Was there a clause has written on paper that requires the Soviets to keep the border as before the war or the return of any occupied land to Japan. The Soviets didn't sign any peace treaty with post war Japan. So there was no legal basis requires Russia to return any islands.

I ask you a question: Israel occupied Goland heights in six days war,1967. Has any "Democratic nations" told Israel: You should return those lands back to Syria. Of course nobody would do that, because the double standard of the West is always, this is about to humiliate Russia!

They never owned them prior to the war? Basic human decency? Russians shouldn't need a paper to tell them to do the right thing.

Because they haven't returned the stolen property yet...

Of course nobody would do that, because the double standard of the West is always, this is about to humiliate Russia!

1) I think Israel should return the heights. 2) Russia does plenty good humiliating itself.

Do you know the history of the Ainu people who migrated to Hokkaido around the 5th century AD while oppressing the Nivkh people?
