Russia declines Japanese dog diplomacy ahead of summit

That this story not only saw the light of day but was widely reported demonstrates the degree to which journalism in the Internet age (and commentators on that journalism) are fixated on trivia. A non-story about a non-issue.

What exactly is the diplomatic etiquette for accepting live animals? Putin already accepted one previously, so it seems excessive to keep providing dogs as gifts eve if they are as companions to the previous gift. Anyway, Russia is so squalid these days he'd be like to eat it so it's a good thing the lucky pooch was saved in time

Why Japan insists on doing things it thinks YOU should want is beyond me... and then they get upset when you point out it's not "omotenashi" but just self-serving interests.

If you want to do a proper diplomacy, you do not give gifts but fair deals to each other. About time someone learnt about it, this age...

Abe thought that giving a dog to Putin would make Russia show reciprocity by giving the Kurils to Japan. LOL, pretty embarrassing. Well, this is going to set the tone for their meeting.....

But a Japanese legislator said Russia had turned down the offer.

Sure Japan was lacking in creativity by wanting to give a dog - again. But why not just take the pup and move on. Doesn't make much sense to reject the gift. Now it's a awkward issue that the press is sure to make a big deal about.

Japan loves to give presents that remind the receiver of Japan. You know, all the Cherry Blossoms and stuff. It's a bit narcissistic if you asked me. Here, have a symbol of Japan as a present. Aren't we thoughtful?

According to the BBC, Japan gave Putin an akita named 'Yume' in 2012, which he still has, and this new dog was supposed to be a companion for the old dog. It reminds me a bit of the time someone bought me a waffle maker for Christmas (because they love making waffles), only to buy me yet another useless waffle maker the year after. Clearly a bit embarrassing for Japan.

Unfortunately, the Japanese people do not deserve these islands back. When you look at Okinawa and Hokkaido you realize the Japanese people does not care much with your own homeland. Chinese immigrants are buying a lot of properties along the Japanese coast. If the Russians returned kuril islands to control of Japan goverment kuril islands would easily bought by the comunists.

Maybe he just wasn't in the mood for another dog, and that's it. Should he take on a new dog he doesn't want so Japan's "cute" puppy-love idea (which they probably want the islands back in exchange for) is 'respected'? Hell no!

RUSSIA loves signing business deal agreements . Japan should try to sign as many business agreements as possible during the visit of Mr Puntin to Japan on December 15- 16 to consolidate business relations between the two countries.

Diplomacy is about knowing who you are dealing with. The offer of the Akita ken is one of respect. The rejection the opposite, confirming Russian style diplomacy, which should be well known by now. Blunt, abrasive, deceitful.

But, how many dogs would he end up with if he kept accepting them from Japan? It's actually pretty lame on japans part to give him another dog. Couldn't they come up with anything new? How about a ferret?

Perhaps, unbeknownst to Japan, the Russians have discovered that Yume's preferences are, ahem, not heterosexual in nature and that they didn't want to get into this delicate matter in a diplomatic forum.

I'm glad that former the former worlds leader is decaying, but Russian food doesn't seem so decilious. 5 speed is so right. The world will change. China and Russia are our new masters.

I think Russia already got everything it wanted from Santa this year. I very much doubt they have anything planned to get them out of diplomatic hot water simply by making a deal with Japan.

Let me see. Since the Japanese summit really started being a thing, Russia has succeeded in talks with India, negotiated this and that with China. We have had Brexit, which has preoccupied the EU. Then they inked a no risk, no sacrifice, lip service deal with OPEC. And then they have the Trump thing going for them. They have had a pretty good year, all things considered. Certainly they are not going to give anything to Japan at this point. Next year, they can look forward to Trump detente, a more friendly Turkey, policy paralysis in Iraq, marginally higher oil prices, and a distracted Europe. All they really had to do was wait.. and do some hacking here and there.

If you were planning on following the summit, go read about the Kardashians instead. Nothing of interest will be coming out of all this summit nonsense.
