There is nothing wrong with this, these two islands will remain Russian territory after Abe and Putin agree on the terms of the peace treaty.

These two islands are non negotiable, Putin is making it clear.

And Abe san is ready to go along with this scheme according to reports.

Excellent idea. Japan is undergoing a massive expansion of their military and it is all offensive. Putin is expecting Japan to attack Russia to retake-retake the islands and revitalize their economy. After all they used war to steal them from Russia the first time. Of course it will work again !

Moscow protests Japan installing a missile defense system in Japan, but has no problem installing defenses and bringing troops to disputed islands outside of Russia.

Pot meet kettle...

@weasel

It's because Russia claims that the missile defense system's advanced radar will be used to spy on them. You know, because we can't just use the spy satellites we already have in place to see whatever we want to in Russia, we need to convince Japan to buy an expensive missile defense system and wait years for it to be installed so we can spy on Russia that way...

Good idea.

Sounds like a complete waste of money. How likely is Japan to attack Russia with ICBMs?

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

Russia will never hand back the islands as they are very strategic importance in defending the Sea of Okhotsk and its nuclear force stronghold

Ask Ukraine how that whole handing-back-the-land thing is going

I said this in a post on another article a few days ago and I will say it again here.

Russia and China will NEVER cede territory they believe is theirs and they will do whatever is necessary to protect their claims, including the deployment of military assets to the territory, regardless of the protests and condemnation by other nations. And the same is true for South Korea.

They don't bloody well care about the diplomatic niceties when it comes to territorial claims. As the old saying goes, strength makes right.

So, the Japanese bureaucrats in the Foreign Ministry need to set aside their naive ideas of negotiating with either party over territory these nations occupy that Japan claims.

Similarly, Japan should make no mistake that if it holds territory that these countries have an interest in, it better aggressively defend these territories and invest all resources necessary to do so if it wants to retain control. Particularly in relation to China.

Sorry, but that is the reality. Not trying to be a warmonger or anything, just pointing out the harsh realities.

Yeah, Stalin was a saint...

no more so than the IJA

I honestly wonder if Abe has ASKED Putin (or just hinted it would be agreeable) to do this so he can get his way and change the Constitution, while also keeping the ire of the ultra-right by saying he's trying to get the islands back but Russia refuses. This is win-win for Abe.

I wasn't sure if you were joking or not, but on reflection, you join a small pool of JT posters who are very pro-Trump and pro-Russia, so I guess not. But do you really have such good access to the mind of Putin?

@Peter14

Unprovoked attack to take Japanese Islands at the end of WWII.

The Soviet Union declared the war against Japan on August 8, 1945, and two countries officially remain in a state of war to this day.

And of course warring nations are allowed to occupy the territory from the other, pending a peace treaty to redraw the border.

Like all other seized lands, Russia is surrounding itself with taken land as buffer zones protecting what it considers their legitimate land. Strategists on this side of the bufffer areas must learn this. China has done the same, just look at the lands between the other powers and it. Others suffer for their own capricious wants.

What if Japan started aiding Ukraine

The Soviet Union declared the war against Japan on August 8, 1945, and two countries officially remain in a state of war to this day.

The declaration was unprovoked. Japan had not been hostile to Russia during WWII and Russia had not been hostile to Japan. Therefore the declaration and subsequent attacks were unprovoked.

The Soviet Union was obliged to enter the war against Japan according to an agreement with the Allies at Potsdam.

Indeed, the allies requested Russia join them against Japan. That in no way negates the fact that prior to their declaration of war against Japan, there had been no hostilities between the two during WWII. In fact the Russians had been worried that Japan would assist Germany who had invaded Russia and held elite Russian winter soldier divisions in the North East Russian territory until they realized that Japan would not attack them, at which point those troops were transferred to reinforce depleted and destroyed divisions fighting the Germans. This enabled the Russians to stop German troops from capturing Moscow and allowed them to launch a winter offensive agains the Germany units who were not outfitted to fight in winter conditions.

Russia better hurry up their island defence strategy because the Russian Pacific fleet is aging and may not be able to provide assistance in emergency! There the disputed islands were in siege and more missiles need to be deploy me there!
