night knight: Japanese are able to decide for themselves.

I never said they couldn't. I asked, if you check the post, does anyone in Japan bothered about these sanctions?

YuriOtani, you are abolutly right, Japan and Russia should be friends. Past of the relationship between the two countries is difficult, but it does not mean that they should be hostile to each other in future.

Jay Wilson, sanctions on Moscow definitely will not help to resolve "this dispute".

Japanese corporation agents who have to make deals to purchase oilwill be sanctioned but they may be glad. Not in cold Russia but nice warm Latin America now as PM Abe opened up very good possibillity What else Japan lose to purchase from Russia?

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Russia, china, Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba. All of those countries share something in common, Their government is always the same. I went to Cuba time ago, its like a ghost Town, their people are all heart broken. Sad truth

Russia plans to at least double oil and gas flows to Asia in the next 20 years, while Japan has resorted to huge fuel imports to replace lost nuclear energy, after reactors were shut down because of the 2011 Fukushima disaster.

Thank you. Indeed, the situation is quickly changing.....

now Russia saving Donetsk-Lugansk region from massacre by nazis who bombard cities with heavy artillery and missiles.

They say right now pro-Russian rebels surrounded main forces of Ukranians, seizing heavy armored vehicles, tanks, self-propelled missile launchpads, heavy trucks. If they launch an offensive towards to Kiev soon, I will not be that much surprised.

JoeintokyoAug. 24, 2014 - 10:40AM JST "it is extremely regrettable" Ah, Japan's trite, go-to phrase. Did Japan think it could unilaterally ban Russian citizens without repercussions?

Living in Japan for a long time, I've noticed (like many elsewhere in the world) that Japanese really don't like the taste >of their own medicine. But Japanese seem--more than others--not to "get it" when this happens to them. It's like some >unfair action was unilaterally taken against them out of the blue.

No, it's expected and in the calculation. What, you think Japan was REALLY surprised? LOL

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

@fizzbit Did you ever stop to think that the one putting those citizens in danger are the supporters Russian's got using that town as citizen meat-shields for their base? They should vacate and fight where there are no citizens if they must fight, but instead they are cowards and would rather use children as their hostage defence-line for oppression while they shoot down more commercial airliners with their rockets.

Kiev can't just stand still and let that minority of thugs take over the country, not at any cost.

russia is brown tap water, wild packs of dogs running around with rabies, and dying dogs convulsing in the middle of sidewalks from the mass poisoning the government lays out to get rid of them.... Yeah, I think I'll pass on "touring" those sites anyway. imo basically anyone who goes there of their own volition is directly consenting to putin's tyranny as being acceptable.

it when the rest of the world says he is wrong. Again, it is called the INTERNATIONAL rule of law.

That's not an international rule of law but opininons of hypocritical politicians from USA, GB and Germany.

The Soviets lost the Cold War, get over it.

The Cold War is going on right now.

night knight: Rather he has no respect to a bunch of fat cats who dare to dictate to anyone in the world what to do or not to do.

Good, Vlad-kun still needs his diapers changed and a bottle, and perhaps even a nice pacifier. He can dish it out but he can't take it when the rest of the world says he is wrong. Again, it is called the INTERNATIONAL rule of law. Which Vlad-kun does not get to dictate. The Soviets lost the Cold War, get over it. They dictate nothing now, no vanquished has in history nor in the present.

@Jay WilsonAUG. 24, 2014 - 05:29PM JST

Japan has not bullied Russia and behaved itself and what did that get Japan from Russia; NOTHING. What you said is just not true.

I suppose you are American. Reading this forum, everyon can see that your countrymen often praise and justify bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Besides, Americans constantly call dead solders of Japan as "criminals of A,B,C class".Telling Japanese people "not to go in Yasukuni" is a plain insult to feeling of ordinary people. You have just said to Japanese person " what you said is just not true". Excuse me, but your attitude is arrogant and selfish. As for Russia, during Russo-Japanese war Japanese ground and naval forces completely defeated Russian Army and Fleet. Later, in WW II Soviets defeated Kwantung Army in Manchuria. Do Russians hold any negativity to Japanese? No. Russians are fond of Japanese culture, traditions, technology. Russians never criticized Japan for "comfort women", "Yasukuni Shrine", "whale hunting" etc. In short, Russian attitude to Japan is totally different. You must realize it. Speaking about NOTHING, you seem to have almost zero knowledges about economical and political relations between two countries.

-4 ( +3 / -7 )

@upper;

Maybe I am wrong somewhere, but where is it?

You can point it or them out.

Any nation who want to get the respect from Japan has to be tough to Japan.

the USA behaved the most tough to Japan, drop A-bombs cause economic crisis to Japan, so Japan respect USA the most.

Hardly Japanese people share this viewpoint...

13 ( +15 / -2 )

Any nation who want to get the respect from Japan has to be tough to Japan.

the USA behaved the most tough to Japan, drop A-bombs cause economic crisis to Japan, so Japan respect USA the most. Then Japan did something, Japan no need to respond to the nations related but to explain to the USA.

The Russia play tough to Japan by took islands.and never shows weak to Japan, so the second that Japan respect most is Russia.

on the contrary, Look at China, from a long history, we can say China is the nation that from which Japan benefit most, but because Japan once defeat China, so Japan hate China the most. and Korea is the nation that from which Japan benefit the second, so Japan hate Korea the second.

And Australia as the ally of Japan, Japan never promise to stop whale hunting. Dear Japan do this to USA?

So Russia will always play tough with Japan.

-12 ( +1 / -13 )

Russia has banned several Japanese citizens from entering the country, expanding retaliatory measures against countries which have imposed sanctions over the crisis in Ukraine.

The most funny thing - crisis in Ukraine

Not in Russia

-7 ( +3 / -10 )

Putin is bully???!! Seriously? Gentlemen, please!! Think logically! Lets compare.

And lets look at the recent track record of US, the best friend of Japan.

The only thing that determines whether or not Putin is a bully are the actions of Putin (and Russia). The actions of the US and/or Japan have nothing to do with whether or not Putin is a bully. The US and Japan may also be bullies, but their actions do not negate the actions of Putin.

8 ( +11 / -3 )

Nobody should invest in a country like that. It is worse than China and only slightly better than North Korea in terms of rule of law.

-2 ( +7 / -9 )

@kyushubillAUG. 24, 2014 - 12:20PM JST

It is very regrettable that a country run by dictator that has no respect for international rule of law and sees fit to throw a temper tantrum.

Rather he has no respect to a bunch of fat cats who dare to dictate to anyone in the world what to do or not to do.

@SaiakuAUG. 24, 2014 - 02:35PM JST

is that why you can't see that putin is a criminal? he's a true dictator, and should be eradicated.

So, it was Putin who bombed Iraq, Lybia and Afganistan, killing thousands of people for nothing, right?

-6 ( +4 / -10 )

The MSM is in full propaganda mode, and it looks like everyone here except for Asakaze has bought it. It's amazing how some can just ignore how Kiev is bombing the city centers killing innocent women and children and somehow Putin is the bad guy. I understand better now how hitler was able to accomplish what he did.

-6 ( +4 / -10 )

@Asakaze are you russian? is that why you can't see that putin is a criminal? he's a true dictator, and should be eradicated.

6 ( +12 / -6 )

Not sure what can be done about this, Honest Abe has followed his masters commands well. Have mixed feelings about what has happened.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Putin is bully???!! Seriously? Gentlemen, please!! Think logically! Lets compare. Lately Russia used force once - in 2008, defeating invasion of Ossetia by Georgian army. Now in Ossetia Mr.Putin is a national hero, they consider Russsian army liberators from Georgian agression. Now Russia saves population of Donetsk and Lugansk from starvation and thirst (humanitarian convoy), while the bands of the neo-nazi Kiev regime shell locals every day. The population of the region is really thankful to Russia for the help. And lets look at the recent track record of US, the best friend of Japan. Now THREE countries in complete mess and shambles as a result of direct US military agressions - Iraq, Afghanistan and Lybia, dozens (if not hundreds) of thousands of people are killed. And ask Iraqis, Afghans, Lybians what do they think about US? And who we should call an international bully after that? Russias response to the Japanese sanctions is calm and correct, tit-for-tat, its international practice. So use your head before calling Mr.Putin a bully.

-5 ( +7 / -12 )

Neither Russia's foreign ministry nor Japan's disclosed the names of the citizens who are banned from entering Russia. That's the saving point. Sanctions will let Moscow sidle up with Beijing. Even if the Japanese banks keep from providing Russian companies with fund, China will always be ready to take advantage of loopholes. See what happened to Azadegan oil field in Iran. Abe may learn from Netanyahu and wait and see how the wind blows pretending to fight with Putin while expecting Merkel or someone to steal a march on the US before the winter comes.

Russia, in sanctions retaliation, bars some Japanese citizens

Ooh! Take that Japan. Some of your citizens can't go to a country that destabilizes peace in Eastern Europe and that looks down on gay pride. Yeah, I'm real sure Japan will be offering a grovelling apology soon. Not. It looks to me like Russia is copying its pet China, by initiating in childish retaliations, rather than being mature. Meanwhile, the world keeps turning.

1 ( +10 / -9 )

@noriyosan73AUG. 24, 2014 - 06:59AM JST

Right now the citizens feel like they are the victims of the terrible foreign empires.

Terrible? I'd choose other words ( but the are restricted to use here).

@some14someAUG. 24, 2014 - 07:58AM JS

may be a blank list...mere announcement to please US (!)

Possible, blank lists from both sides. Why not?

@NanraayashimunitarinaiAUG. 24, 2014 - 07:58AM JST

I was in Soch in March. No "brown" water. Bright, beautiful city, great and friendly people.

Good. They say nowadays Russians prefer to visit sea coast of Crimean peninsula over Sochi resorts.....

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Shameless and cheap shot like the bully Putin.

-1 ( +7 / -8 )

Time for a new energy policy! We have the knowledge to develop clean energy, why are we still using fossil fuels? GREED!!

2 ( +4 / -2 )

To JP: Tell Russia kiss your patootie.

Nanraayashimunitarinai: I was in Soch in March. No "brown" water.

Thousands of journalists in Sochi, doubt any of them report if the water is clear, if 5 journalists report brown water that's what'll make global headlines.

Maybe the journalists who made last-minute reservations got the worst, almost-built hotels.

0 ( +6 / -6 )

I'd be interested in seeing the list. It would be funny if it was just a random compilation of Japanese names without explanation. Like: Taro Yamada, Shinsuke Suzuki?

@DaDude - I don't think we should punish ordinary Russian citizens directly with across the board travel bans. That would just ally them with the government we are trying to punish and encourage them to be recalcitrant. They need to be able to dump their govenment without feeling like they directly pressured by outsiders.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

"Oh Lordy Lordy, Russia has banned a number of Japanese citizens from entering Russia; what ever will we do....." Like anyone in Japan actually cares about being barred from Russia; that's like being banned from jumping into a live volcano while drinking gasoline......

11 ( +17 / -6 )

I was in Soch in March. No "brown" water. Bright, beautiful city, great and friendly people. Have You ever been there? Yes, don't go anywere, stay in your house in front of a computer and tell people what they should do ))))))

0 ( +12 / -12 )

Neither the Russian nor Japanese foreign ministries said who was on the list.

may be a blank list...mere announcement to please US (!)

0 ( +4 / -4 )

I was actually just thinking that some of these countries involved should bar Russian citizens from entering their countries as well. I met a few Russian tourists on my last trip to Malaysia a few weeks ago.

4 ( +9 / -5 )

"oil and gas-rich Russia"

They'll run out of that stuff eventually.

7 ( +13 / -6 )

Excellent. If people will just not spend tourist yen in countries that are run by people like Putin, the citizens of those countries would begin to understand. Right now the citizens feel like they are the victims of the terrible foreign empires. They do not see the real culprits such as Putin. Also, if the people would not go to NK, Syria, Iraq as tourists or reporters, they would not lose their heads or be in forced hard labor camps begging for the USA government to rescue them. JUST STAY OUT. JUST SAY NO, I WILL NOT BUY A TICKET TO GO THERE. If the USA citizens knew how much the government spent to send Clinton or any other "celebrity" they would be outraged. But they are not, because the cost is never mentioned. Besides, who wants to go to Russian and take a shower in brown water? Ask anyone who went to Sochi.
