So let me get this straight. Japan insists that there's a dispute over the Northern Territories, but not the Senkakus? How convenient
Jay Wilson
China wants the senkakus in totality and has not suuggested a compromise
Are you that deluded to think Putin would return any of the islands even if Japan had not sanctioned russsia or had supported the annexation of crimea?

@SamuraiBlue" Japan is not a republic so there is no way a prefecture can claim independence"
True, but historically Okinawa was not Japanese prefecture. Just like Crimea was autonomous republic, Okinawa was independent prior to Japanese invasion.
Jay Wilson
who sqaid they are playing hardball?
yamashi
@liarsandfools "Well, Japan, what about it? Are things changed after Crimea?"
Abe understands that Crimea was a very bad example for his domestic policy towards to Okinawa. If Okinawans gain much more power in their movement for independence, they can solve well-known problems with US bases in few days. So, Abe needs to adjust political ties with the USA.

Putin is a very dangerous man, who should be taken seriously.

russia has said that the 1956 deal is still valid and they have also said that the islands are an inseparable part of russia and they will not give any terriitory back to Japan. So which load of russian crap are we to believe? And russia can not be trusted to keep its words regardingthee '56 deal. and why shouuld Japan compromise with China? Beijing wants all of the islands back and is not going to get all of them so why ddoes beijing not compromise?
Jay Wilson
is anyone under the delusion that russia will ever return any of the islands back to Japan?

Japan cannot play hard-ball with Putin. As if . . .

Japan isn't exactly falling over themselves to negotiate either. On the other hand, Russia is offering to negotiate with Japan over the northern territories - however Japan wants them back " in totality". This logic is starting to sound familiar isn't it?

If Okinawa was not a Japanese prefecture then none of them are since the prefecture system only started from the Meji period in which Okinawa was included from the start.

Well, Japan, what about it? Are things changed after Crimea? If not then Abe should go to Moscow. If yes, then Abe should adhere to the G-7 solidarity and reduce the contact with Putin. Hint: he is not going to give Japan back anything without extracting a huge price.
Christopher Glen
Did Okinawa vote to be a prefecture?
Japan has to first recognise what is apparent to the rest of the world: there is a dispute.
Maybe it's because Japan will only negotiate with Russia on condition Russia recognises the islets are Japanese territory, to be returned at a later date. Japan's refusal to bend on this is the reason why the talks are getting nowhere. Besides, from Russias point of view it's karma, as Japan intiated the 1904-1905 war with a Pearl Harbour-like attack on Port Arthur.
SamuraiBlue
Japan is not a republic so there is no way a prefecture can claim independence without the agreement of all prefectures. Basically the ones who are making the most noise in Okinawa to remove the bases out of the island are mainland lefties and some foreigners. People around Futenma doesn't really care about Henoko as long as the US moves that base somewhere else.

The lack of dialouge is Rusia's fault, not japan's
