The nation that unilaterally invaded a neighbor and is still fighting a war after 2 years should shut it's autocratic pie hole. And stealing Japan's territory after they surrendered in WWII is what's "categorically unacceptable".

Peace through strength.
Suck on it!

Good on Japan.
Russia's Putin is a THUG, and the only way to take down such an individual is in numbers.
SaikoPhysco
Smart move by NATO, the U.S. and Japan, by holding exercises in Hokkaido they further put pressure on Russian armed forces that are already stretched thin and moral must be very low. If it were me, I'd put as much pressure globally in every theatre of operations and work the Russian military hard.
Fighto!
Why wouldn't Japan prepare and plan for any eventuality? That absolutely involves regular drills. Fascist Russia has shown they will invade sovereign nations after repeatedly lying and stating the opposite. Of course Japan does not trust a single word that comes out of that regime.
Fascist Russia is not even worth listening to. They should stop warmongering if they dont wish to continue putting tens of thousands of their own in bodybags.
Go pound sand, fascists. Japan will do as they see fit to defend herself and her allies.

Ah, Japan should file that protest next to the peace treaty Putin says is off the table.
kibousha
Opportunist cowards like the scum known as Putin don't like it when their opponents are growing to be better than them.

Ah, Russia. The World's nr. 1 bully, right after China.
Sadly, those 2 countries are the reason NATO still exists, and why EU is now in the process of creating an organised army of the Union.
O guess those American bases in Japan are a positive thing now, especially with the Chinese and Russian aggressions.

@Fos
Amazing, every word you just said, was wrong.

I'd put Russia above China since they invaded 2 countries beginning in 2014. Ukraine and Georgia.
China has only invaded 1 country ... well, if you don't count what they've been doing in Tibet, Nepal, or India ...
TaiwanIsNotChina
You keep giving us grandiose visions of Russia's conquests and yet they are still stuck where they were in Fall of 2022.

I bet it also says Kherson city is part of Russia. A fine document that belongs in the fiction section of the library.

The Southern Kuriles is most certainly disputed. The Western nations all consider the four islands to be Japanese territory under Russian Administration (ie; Occupation). Domestic legalization of stolen territory is not recognized by the international community as confirming ownership.
Russia continues to cite WWII, but the invasion and occupation of these islands, effected after Japan declared surrender, is in violation of both the Cairo and Potsdam declarations, and the USSR/Russia not having attended or signed the 1951 San Francisco Peace Treaty has no authority to occupy these islands.
Stealing territory is in Russia's character, they did it in Eastern Europe under Stalin and they are doing it now under Putin.

Since NATO is not at war with Russia or anyone else, I wonder, who is the idiot?
Russia is at war with Ukraine after choosing to invade it to steal its territory and replace its government.
John
Bite me, Russia. We can coordinate with whomever we see fit.

Ask any Japanese person young or old whether Japan has been better, more prosperous, peaceful that pre-1945. You display your lack of knowledge of what the Japanese civilians went through during WWII, being lied to by their military controlled goverment, daily bombings of the cities, shortage of everything starting with food as well as what they went through to rebuild afterwards.
Yes, Japan is a big winner. It is respected by all free nations in the world. In contrast to your China dictatorship which is despised by most of planet. China is not invited to Rimpac or Pitch Black.
OssanAmerica
Japan doesn't need any advice, it has given up aggression and imperialism 80 years ago, It's your country China that needs to learn from history and cease it's aggressive territorial expansion and threatening Taiwan with military force.
Finally you state something correct. The Japanese say that even a monkey will fall out of a tree sometimes. Japan has retained what it has because of the U.S. If the USSR/Russia had invaded and occupied Japan, it would look like North Korea. Japan understands this and having evolved into a democracy it finds being allied with the U.S. to be in it's best interests.
Peter14
Russia previously chastised NATO when it questioned the presence of Russian troops exercising next to its border with Ukraine, saying it had the absolute right to hold military manouvers anywhere in Russian territory. So it is a wonder they do not see Japan as having those same rights.
Japan can have joint exercises with anyone it chooses, anywhere in Japanese territory, and Russia can just suck it up. Russian complaints are another vain attempt to influence the behaviour of Japan to behave in a way that is beneficial to Russia. It is not going to work. In fact Japan should now invite Australia, Philippines and South Korea to participate just to piss Russia off further.

It is not the business or concern of Putin/Russia.

Your point is kind of ridiculously silly considering….yes, in fact, it DID work out for Japan in the long run. One of the most stellar post WWII success stories on the planet; a relatively tiny island nation became one of if not THE global economic super powers in a matter of a few decades, with exceptionally high standards of living , thriving democracy (oops! Is that word censored by your handlers? Sorry!) and geopolitical peace and stability. Yes, it absolutely worked out for Japan. Unlike if they had fallen into the filth heap is Russia and China’s sphere of influence. Rats, you guys missed out.
Sadly nations like Germany had to wait a bit longer for the scourge of communism and totalitarianism to be vanquished before its true united potential could be shown, but boy it was a massive success story too

The UN recognizes Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizia as the sovereign territory of Ukraine.
So nice to see you affirming that these things matter and that Russia has no legitimate claim whatsoever to these territories under the principles you seek to uphold.
TaiwanIsNotChina
The Japanese can count themselves winners for not being in China, though.
TaiwanIsNotChina
So Russia gets to lose some territory. This is what we are all looking for, not chest thumping that might is right.
Either colonies, things you need a magnifying glass to see, or part of Russia's disgrace.
deanzaZZR
@OA Here's some advice, don't start imperialist global wars and you won't lose any territory. Japan is lucky to retain all the Ryukyu Islands, Senakaku/Diaoyu and even some island nobody has heard of half the way to Hawaii (Minami Tori) ONLY because the US military occupied all these areas for its own Cold War purposes.
Germany lost territory after WW2. Italy lost territory. Hungary lost territory. Losers in war generally lose territory.
deanzaZZR
@OA To summarize your way of thinking invite a country to drop 2 nuclear bombs on 2 of your cities. Be occupied and lose sovereignty for 7 years (25 years for Okinawans). Add military bases for 70+ years and count yourself a big winner.
That mostly certainly is an interesting take on history, a take that pretty much only an USA citizen (military bonus points) could take.

NATO is at war with Russia and Kishida decides to join, what an idiot. His decision will lead to the destruction of Japan.
JJE
The UN recognizes the Kuril Islands as sovereign territory of the Russian Federation.
Mr Goodman
Interesting to see what Putin will do.

Hi Dante, tell me what is wrong with my statement.
In the last six months two crimes took place in Okinawa for which two US Marines were indicted. The first one was ascertained by the police in March but the government of Japan decided not to tell the local prefecture, basically hide it. On the 16th of June in the Okinawa local assembly elections, the Governor Tamaki side (against the expansion of US military in the island) lost the majority.
The only thing wrong, in my opinion, is following this warmongers narrative where the economic interest of the likes of Blackrock and his proxies, come before dialogue e negotiations
Mr Goodman
Is this for real ?
Kishida is escalating the situation ?
Is this necessary ?
JJE
As the article eronously indicates, the islands are not "disputed".
Does Tokyo maintain the Senkaku Islands are disputed?
No, it doesn't because it takes two sides to have a 'dispute'.
The Russian Constitution - a higher force - recognizes that territory as undisputable, non-negotiable territory of the Russian Federation.
Legally obtained as a consequence and passage of WWII.
Fos
I think by now even an elementary school kid figured out that these are all actions initiated by Washington who has all the interest to weaken Russia and ask all the (so called) allies to buy their American made weapons, not to mention the shale gas they produce, over 3 times as expensive as the Russian oil. I find incredible how people live in a fantasy world here in Japan.
nik
Well what to do now? Hokkaido will have to be annexed to the Kuril Islands. So that the waters are not muddied there. They lived quietly and did not grieve. And now again we will have to beg for our former territories
Fos
Hi Nik, perhaps we should the same question to the people of Okinawa, not only occupied by American troops, but where horrendous crimes on 'young locals' are committed quite frequently by the Us marines, and it was clear that the Japanese government wanted to hide the latest facts until the local assembly election last week. As for the Kuril Islands, there were no issues with Moscow before the hostilities initiated in Ukraine.
