I’m actually with Russia on this one.

Anyone else feel like the power of veto should be scrapped, and these decisions should be made by all countries in a true democratic fashion.

I'm a bit confused as the article makes clear that the 1967 Outer Space Treaty is still in force.

.

"the need to verify compliance." of the new agreement is why russia blocked it.

.

Otherwise known as, i want to peek inside your satalite to check for nukes.

The 1967 treaty is a agreement not to put nukes in space. Each side has only the others word they did not. There is no clause to allow one to peek inside the others satalite.

In case anyone missed it: Russia’s U.N. Ambassador "Nebenzia proposed an amendment to the U.S.-Japan draft saying an arms race in outer space should refer to all kinds of weapons – not just nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction."

Incorrect. The US is demanding everyone "verify compliance", except themselves. That is why the US voted against the amendment on ALL space weapons.

I'm guessing this was just Russia being anti-US. Doubt there is much real use of nuclear weapons in space that aren't better, cheaper, to deploy on Earth.

Russia was a leader in space tech and now that leadership is shifting to China. I'd much rather have smart Russians working on space exploration than weapons.

Obviously!

What's the difference between this new treaty banning nuclear tests in outer space as proposed by Japan and the U.S. at a UN Security Council meeting and the 1963 treaty?

I think all kinds of nuclear tests, whether they are atmospheric, subcritical, of underground, of outer space, or no matter what, should be banned by all means.

Are you suggesting that now is a fruitful time for the US and Russia to negotiate anything?

According to some Russian telegram channels, Russia has begun developing a roadmap for severing diplomatic relations with countries that have decided to steal Russian gold reserves. Q Are you talking about negotiations :) With whom? with your west hypocritical fraternity?

Is anyone surprised by who vetoed and who abstained?

This US-Japan resolution is nothing more than ploy. Completely dishonest stuff from dishonest quarters.

Look at the facts on who voted:

The Russian amendment to refer to ALL weapons in space was voted down by France, Japan, Malta, South Korea, Slovenia, UK and the US with and one abstention, Switzerland. These are some of the usual suspects.

Following the vote, Russia announced its intention to put forward a draft resolution on the prevention of an arms race in outer space, to include all weapons.

Letting Russia, which can barely afford a space program at this point, ban all weapons in space would not be in anyone's interest.

I hope Russia gets on that as we are tired of getting their misaddressed messages all of the time. They can keep NATO and the West's name out of their mouth afterwards.

They should be working on making clear that various types of nuclear propulsion are allowed and they should be setting up international cooperation on developing mechanisms of removing space junk.

@JJE TRUE! They believe they are above if all international laws, this is their "Exceptionalism"!

But for different reasons.
