Too bad the Japanese government won’t drop the issue. As soon as they cease showing interest in the islands the Russians would probably try to make a deal.
Ganbare Japan!
Get off inalienable Japanese land now, Medvedev! He is deliberately provoking the Abe Cabinet. If Russia dont want even more trade restrictions than now, and the Peace Deal, then get off the Japanese island and restart negotiations.
I am sick of Japan always being bullied by neighbors.

Wonder when he will be president again? Russia has only two candidates ( Putin and Medvedev) who can be a president of the country. It sounds like chief of village for 100 people.

if you think it is your island put a tank on it

"Russian PM's visit to disputed island regrettable, Japan says"
Gosh, what an exaggeration! A few people in Japan say this maybe. Most people couldn't care less. The islands are currently held by Russia. Before Russia, they were held by Japan and before Japan, there were ainu living there. It should be noted that, thanks to Japanese expansionist policies, the ainu are all but extinct. The ainu probably have a stronger claim, but they aren’t bellyaching about it.
Perhaps "Japan" is upset about the Russian PM's visit to what is at this point in time, his own territory because of the relationship between Japan and Russia. It was the Soviets, not the Atom Bombs of Hiroshima and Nagasaki who actually ended WII.

Japan lost WW2 and the Russians seized the islands.
If Japan wasn’t able to defend them then tough luck.
Can Japan please stop with the ‘hurt feelings’ nonsense!

At the height of my persecution by the Japanese, I very seriously contemplated swimming to one of these Islands. That's how bad it was. Japan a peaceful country ? Tell me another.

Does anyone know if Japan Today has written a historical piece with documentation proving these islands are indeed Japans and not Russias or vice verca? Then this dispute can be settled once and for all. If they do belong to Japan then Japan has a legitimate claim to evict the Russians at any cost and hence the US would be forced to assist as the alliance calls for it to defend Japan. If not then put a base on it like the Chinese build man mad islands and put both US and Japan forces there. All in the name of a "peaceful" Asia and a deterrent to lately but historically known aggressive countries i.e. Russia and China. I think JT did a piece on the man made islands built by China with no one stopping them. One day if Japan doesn't act quickly could very well be the Russians do the same thing on that island in the name of deterrence against US interests and those of Russia. hmm..

I thought he was dead. The islands are Russian and will never be returned to Japan. Pretty much like wearing a blue lapel pin, all show no action.

Japan needs to move on about these islands. After the war, if Russia had their way, they would have taken more. Japan should accept the fact that when you lose a war in which you were the aggressor, there are consequences.

Russia knows that any Island or territory under Japanese control is, by proxy under US occupation and that the US will establish military bases. The US would like nothing better that to have more islands near Russia on which to establish military bases, 800 plus bases is not enough for the US.

Get off inalienable Japanese land now,
actually theyre currently Russian islands, until and agreement says otherwise.
I am sick of Japan always being bullied by neighbors.
unfortuneatly when it comes to Russia there isnt much Japan can do about it.
bass4funk
If it really has to and there’s no other choice, then talks discussions with Japan would be held.
That is just not true. Come on, let’s relax and really look at this.
Depends, why would the US ever let Russia or China get the drop on them, that doesn’t make sense.

I cant believe what they did with that cannon... jeeeeze...

Lost them in the warJapan, get over it. Russia offered to give you back 2 and you refused.

Yes as much as I want to see those islands being given back to Japan that's pretty much the situation now.
Better to let it rest for a while and use diplomacy at a later time to get all or at least some of them back.
In the end these are just symbolic disputes and hardly worth getting worked up over.

Gambare Japan: I am sick of Japan always being bullied by neighbors.
1) Medvedev and Putin don't care what you are tired of.
2) Japan needs to admit they were the colonizers and aggressors who lost a war Japan started.
3) Matsumoto Kiyoshi sell tissues for you to dry your eyes.
4) The islands belong to Russia because Japan lost the war Japan started.
5) Japan needs to stop bullying their neighbors financially and diplomatically. Works both ways.
showchinmono
What war did Japan start against Russia? Russia was just a coward backstabber.

Russian PM's visit to disputed island regrettable, Japan says
The Russian PM can go anywhere he wants in his country and does not need Japans blessing or permission.

Although Japan may have been the loser after WW2, so too was Germany, yet East Germany and East Berlin were eventually given back to West Germany.
