five negotiating parties to work together and exchange information on how to bring the North back to the bargaining table

Ah... Hello? Anyone there from the 5 "negotiating parties"?? How do you negotiate with a paranoid maniac in his hermit kingdom who wants to shower down fire on you without mercy? Ya s'poze there might be a remote possibility that North Korea doesn't want to talk? Actions speak louder than words...like the seismic thumb print of a nuke going off in your back yard, like the missiles NK is getting ready to fire over the Pacific in the direction of Japan. While the "negotiators" talk about talking at the bargaining table, NK is enriching more nuclear material under the table.

30061015: I think the world is trying to make NK back off w/o casualties, because NK has to be the 1st offender and make the first strike in this situation before they're ended once and for all.

Unfortunately, I agree that this does give them time to research and enrich materials, but it also gives time for other countries to prepare, research, defend, and, when the time's right, strike.

Japan wants them to come back and listen to them going on about abductions again.

I think that can be a good idea to invest our money in an Asian version of the Eurotunel, so if NK attack SK, J can send troops and tanks by train to help them or if NK agree to give up the nukes, they can get some money from allow the pass of trains for trade from J to China and Russia.

The only meeting North Korea should ever attend in the future should be one where Kim Jong Il and his family are led into the courtroom in leg irons and hand cuffs to face charges of crimes against humanity.

I wonder what APEC has to say on this...

I think if all countries had nuclear weapons, it would level the playing field. Kind of unfair that the US can have them, but no other country.

The US should lead by example and eliminate its own nuclear weapons if it feels so strongly about other countries having them.

North Korea has never done anything to any other country its entire history. Why should the US, Japan, or Russia feel like it can sanction North Korea. Isolating a country and nuclear arms shouldn't be negotiated at the same time. Clearly North Korea behaves the way it has because of all of the atrocities that have happened to it. Why should they trust the United States? It looks like the US is controlled by Goldman Sachs and Billionaires are holding secret meetings to talk population control. I wouldn't trust those guys.

jhk:

Why should the US, Japan, or Russia feel like it can sanction North Korea.

The human misery, starvation of millions and imprisonment of innocents in NK should be enough to pull the plug on all trade with that country now.

North Korea has never done anything to any other country its entire history

On June 25th 1950, North Korea invaded South Korea in an attempt to unify Korea under the leadership of Kim II Sung. Most would agree that invading SK qualifies as "doing something" to another country.

jhk, you don't trust the u.s. but you trust NK?

It's obvious NK is irrational just from their crazy statements they release. I think the latest from NK is that the U.S. being hostile for putting up missile defense systems around hawaii.

North Korea has never done anything to any other country its entire history.

Even if that were the case - and anyone with a brain in their head knows it isn't - what they have done to their own people is all a sane person or gov't needs to know in order to judge the Nork nutjobs.

I could bring up kidnapping SK and Japanese nationals - does that qualify? How about blowing up airliners? That was Kim Jong Il's idea. Now he's the "dear leader" of a feudal society that regularly murders it's own citizens. Nice guys.

Of course it's likely that the dear little leader doesn't want to negotiate right now so I don't know how Japan and SK can "convince" him, short of kissing his dictatorial a$$ some more. But it would seem that the rest of the world is not going to buy the same horse twice, so lil Kim is just going to have to eat grass like the rest of the NK citizens - eventually.

Except that they tried to assasinate the South Korean cabinet.

You can hate America, of course, why not... Much worser is, how they treat their own people. I'm always wondering why these poor masses don't stand up and fight in any of these poor countries in South America, Asia and Africa...

The US should lead by example and eliminate its own nuclear weapons if it feels so strongly about other countries having them.

Yeah... the world's powerhouse suddenly throw the cards from the table... that'll fair well when someone wants to attack the US... The US will most likely be the last people to get rid of nukes, and other people getting rid of them is not going to happen.

I think if all countries had nuclear weapons, it would level the playing field. Kind of unfair that the US can have them, but no other country.

Checks and balances don't work against psychopath dictators. Their leader pretty much stated that they will go out with a bang should military action occur. They do not care that other people will glass them after.

The reason we do not want to though is that other countries (mainly South Korea and Japan) will suffer damage if N Korea cracks and goes all out. They have lots of missiles aimed straight for major cities. This is why we are trying so hard and taking our time to hope for a peaceful outcome (if not just delaying the inevitable).

The Japanese Occupation was in 1910, then the US took over in 1945, which soon after divided Korea into two pieces. It wasn't until 1950 that North Korea tried to claim its country back, but the US had to "meddle", and still meddles.

North Korea still does not want to be Westernized, and has suffered global isolation because of this.

And then we claim they are retards, that they are the aggressor, and find some excuse to go in there, just like we did Afghanistan and Iraq.

The US meddles with our countries and meddles with our minds, and meddles with its own constitution. The income gap just keeps getting wider and wider and more and more countries get screwed. Meanwhile, everyday Americans, of which David Letterman, and Jay Leno, have already proven, don't even understand their own country. Wake up, fix your own country first, don't mess with other countries.

Nigerian "terrorists" are bombing "Shell Corporation". They aren't terrorists, they don't want Shell in their country. Dig?

There are 1BN in poverty, 26,000 kids dying everday, 10% unemployment and growing, billionaires having secret population control meetings, talk of a world currency through the IMF.

Oh, the US economy is going down the drain, it won't happen to Japan, six months later it happens to Japan, it won't happen to Canada, one year later it happens to Canada, it won't happen to Australia, well I guess we'll have to see.

Goldman Sachs hands out bonuses, when they laid off 2,000 of their own people. This doesn't sound ridiculous to you? Does it ever make sense to just lower everyone's salary by 10% instead of laying off 10% of the company due to "market reasons". You have no idea what you do. Trust me, the Psychopaths are running the corporations, and the interns are being trained to be psychopaths.

Next thing you know, I will probably be taken off this site by US secret service, and listed as a terrorist or something, along with millions of other Americans. And meanwhile, you go along with this, because you don't know what else to do, plus its comfortable, although all your friends have been fired (you have no real friends), and you keep ignoring the fact that the only wars going on in the world are all linked to the US.

Almost everything Obama said he would do, has been reversed, and he is doing exactly what Bush is doing. Enjoy your meal while it gets served by some minimum wage nobody, because eventually it will be you. I've seen many of my friends lose their jobs. The only ones that still have them are the psychopath dictators. Look in the mirror, and see what you have done.

I agree... not only Japan and South Korea but the WORLD needs NKorea to go back to the talks, especially in light of the Uranium announcements.

Unfortunately, I also don't think Japan and/or South Korea are in such a great position to ask for them alone, and need to ask alongside China and hopefully even Russia (and of course the US). You see, Japan and South Korea made DEMANDS first, and now are requesting since the demands didn't really accomplish a whole lot. Usually you try, in all aspects of life, to make requests first and demands later (if needed). You can't usually backtrack like that successfully, and especially with lunatics like the North Korean government.

Someone in Japan "demanded", someone-else in Japan can "request". It would be just as easy to label Bush or Aso as "lunatics" as well.

Its not really all of the "excuses" listed above for going after North Korea's resources. The problem is that most of the world wants North Korea's resources, and perhaps more low wage workers.

That's the real ugliness in this world. Its disgusting.

China is currently involved in political communication with NK. I believe that only country that North Korea listens to is China. China has substantial economic and political leverage with NK. At this time, South Korea and Japan should stay in the sidelines and not be involved at all.

"At this time, South Korea and Japan should stay in the sidelines and not be involved at all."

Exactly... they've proven to be utterly useless thus far, aside from further flaring up tensions.

Look, it's child-care 101. You don't start screaming and threatening to do harm to someone from the outset, because once the child/person (in this case the children in the NK government) realize that's all you've got and you CAN'T go further, you're screwed. You can only back down from the top of the latter and look weaker. Yelling first, then pleading later, won't get you anywhere. There should have been a little more patience and ignoring of NK at the beginning of this most recent crisis intead of jumping into threats, sanctions, etc.; North Korea could have sabre rattled and screamed red itself red in the face before getting all tuckered out, instead of being more empowered.
