"Seoul suspended the process in protest at Tokyo’s decision to review its landmark 1993 apology "

If South Korea truly felt that it's position was accurate there would be no concern for ant kind of review by anyone. The conclusion would support South Korea's position. Only if one is afraid of the results of such a review would they be against a review.

"The review upheld the apology,..

So no problem?

" but angered Seoul by asserting there was no evidence to corroborate the testimony of Korean comfort women."

An investigation conducted in South Korea on 40 former Comfort Women yielded the very same result, so why be angered?

"South Korea also rejected the review’s finding that its government had been involved in drafting the apology."

Well there is documentation which will prove whether this is right or wrong. Pretty simple.

"Around 200,000 women, mainly from Korea but also from China and other Asian countries, were forced to work in Japanese military brothels."

"200,000"; "WERE FORCED". Who said that? Koreans? Japanese? JT? I thought I was reading A***** Daily.

It's one of those cases a la Communist China where "if we do it to our own people it's our own problem, if you do it you are the worst monsters in history"

The women claim the South Korean government trained them and worked with pimps to run a sex trade through the 1960s and 1970s for U.S. troops, encouraged women to work as prostitutes and violated their human rights.

To what end ?????

I wonder the same thing semperfi. No chance that these two parties ever come to any resolution on this issue.

Too bad they can't just leave it alone and spend their time working on something more profitable.

looks like the truth is coming out just like Japan said...Korea established the brothels themselves The suit, filed on June 25, stated that the South Korean authorities subjugated the women and forced them to provide sex, violating their human rights.

Moreover, the group said that they had been obliged to go through medical check-ups for sexually transmitted diseases.

The plaintiffs also urged the authorities to issue an official apology, revealing the true historical facts.

The Korean War lasted from 1950 till 1953 and split the country in two. During the war, the US intervened as South Korea’s ally, while China were allies of the North.

Throughout the war, UN and South Korean comfort stations operated on the frontline.

However, even after hostilities had ended, between the 1950s and 1960s, some 60 percent of all South Korean prostitutes worked near US military camps.

In 1960, two lawmakers in the South Korean National Assembly called on the country’s leadership to train a supply of prostitutes for the allied military, to prevent them from spending their money in Japan instead.

Some surviving South Korean comfort wives have also sued the SK government for forcing them into prostitution with United States military personnel. Both South Korea and Japan should seek to reconcile past historical events and bring closure to the comfort wives issues.

Yeah, it seems destructive. The only position Korea could ever take on this problem is to press the Japanese for concessions, which is never the way to improve relations.

@Kazuaki ShimazakiJul. 19, 2014 - 08:53AM JST “Yeah, it seems destructive. The only position Korea could ever take on this problem is to press the Japanese for concessions, which is never the way to improve relations.”

Nobody wants to improve relations. The only good relation there was was during the time when Korea needed to mimic Japan’s technology, Sanrio culture, Taiga drama, - - . Now they have leaned everything, and Japan is a business rival. Comfort women is a good topic for leading to say bye bye.

Read this: “1tmtmsnbJul. 18, 2014 - 12:10AM JST “during the Korean Peninsula emergency, U.S. forces in Japan cannot be dispatched if there is no understanding of Japan.” ---Shinzo Abe

Shinzo Abe could not have said that without the understanding of USA. This the Koreans know well. So it’s a warning from USA, about Korea’s overly showy honeymoon merrymaking with China, such as, together forming a new monetary system to fundamentally challenge USA’s hegemony. Without USA and Japan’s military support, North South Korea will unite within a week with Kim as new president, and together a tributary of China.

It’s time to change course a bit, outwardly, little by little.

and the Korean head of the UN has been criticizing Japan about many things when the world has serious urgent issues.

The Japanese should bring that crying politician who was on TV recently. Maybe that'll do the trick.

Sir_Edgar

Strange, since no Koreans actually recall sighting of direct involvement of IJA in recruiting the comfort womens. No documents of it either.

This issue has nothing to do with anything other than Korea wanting something for Japan. If they gave two droplets about these old women they would have said something before they agreed to the 65' treaty.

It's always about money.

the truth si the South Korean govt established these brothels to earn money for the country...so much for blaming Japan. These comfort women were still working after Japan was booted out, now only with larger sizes.

"the truth si the South Korean govt established these brothels to earn money for the country"

Read the quote below. Do you think the US President is making things up as well? Please study Japanese history, savagery.

Obama: "This was a terrible, egregious violation of human rights. Those women were violated in ways that, even in the midst of war were shocking."

It's the best relationship now for Japan with South Korea. Who wants to talk with somebody who only demand apology and money.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

The thing that South Korea fails to understand is that the Comfort Women System, as well as all the other military brothel systems that existed before, during and after WWII, are all CRIMES AGAIST WOMEN. Aren't Comfort women, Sex Slaves, Military Prostitutes, whatever you want to call them used by men for sexual pleasure? Japanese soldiers are NOT the only ones who made use of the Comfort Stations. Customers included Korean soldiers and Chinese civilians working for the Japanese. There were an estimnated 240,000 Korean memn serbing in the Japanese military. The father of President "I hate Japan" Park was one of them as an Officer in the IJA. he US Army Report No.46 suggests that even Indian troops may have made use of them. Not that all the customers were MEN. To take what is an obvious crime against women and to turn it into a nationalist political issue is both misguided and deceitful.

Here we go again.

The anti Japan crowd screaming, Japan has "neeeever" apologized or compensated past victims of its aggression in WW2, including comfort women.

What was that about repeating a lie over and over until people think it's the truth?

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

It is sex slaves , it is NOT comfort women.

The officer in UN said this recently.

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

tinawatanabe: "Yes, recently, 70 years after war ended."

Yes, Shinzo and his followers brought the past to be a present matter. As of now, call it Sex Slavery.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

I wish Japan would face this, but they won't. And not facing it (or facing it) won't matter at all.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

It is sex slaves , it is NOT comfort women. The officer in UN said this recently.

Yes, recently, 70 years after war ended.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

Yeah, they're just money-hungry old ladies.

These comments are disgusting. You should be ashamed of yourselves. Some people make me sick.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

It may seem a long time for Westerners, but 70 years is nothing to Asians. AND some of these victims, the women, are still alive. Don't try to sweep it under the mat and pretend it didn't happen. That's been going on for 70 years now. Even if it happened 700 years ago, it still means it happened.

-6 ( +1 / -7 )

Comfort Women? You call it Sex Slavery.

S.K. is wasting their time, talking to the current Japan leaders.
