S Korean president urges Japan to teach future generations 'correct history'

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak on Monday urged Japan to teach its future generations the correct history between the two nations, Yonhap news agency reported. The call comes amid renewed tensions over territorial claims to South Korea's easternmost island of Dokdo, known as Takeshima in Japan.

"Japan has a responsibility to teach its future generations a correct history," Lee said during his speech on Liberation Day, marking the end of Japan's 1910-45 colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula. Yonhap reported that many Koreans see Japan's claims to the island as a sign that it has not repented for its colonial rule of Korea.

“Japan has a responsibility to teach its future generations a correct history,”

Can't argue with that. But never gonna happen.

Japan already teaches it's correct version of history. It's just different to what the rest of the world teaches...

The Japanese governmemt has never apology their 35 years colonial rule and mudering the late queen of the Lees' dynasty in 1910!

So if Japan never really apologized for it's atrocities in WW II, then what makes anyone think they will teach proper history? Especially concerning one of the countries it colonized?

Japan has apologized many times. Any cursory search will turn up many results.

Also, while the point is not invalid, taking lessons on historicity from South Korea is an absolute laugh.

One of the saddest things I've ever seen here in politics is when PM Abe, soon before running away from his post, decided to try and retract apologies made in the past. One of the funniest was when he had to admit, with flat out proof that he was wrong, that he could not back up his claims as to why. This government is full of people who are the relatives of war criminals or just plain soldiers but claim that ACTUAL soldiers during WWII don't know what they are talking about while they supposedly do (but were never there). They claim Japanese don't need to know about the horrors of the past, like the 'comfort women', but insert more pages every year on the atomic bombings, while they sue teachers who will not stand up to their imperial history (flag and anthem).

This country has just suffered MAJOR natural catastrophe, and that is what is important, and yet it's clear they cannot ever learn.

Can someone explain to me how Japan already apologized for war atrocities that it denies? How you can apologize for something that you supposedly claim never happened seems to be some zen magic trick that's beyond me.

just-a-guy

24 May 1990. Emperor Akihito. “Reflecting upon the suffering that your people underwent during this unfortunate period, which was brought about by our nation, I cannot but feel the deepest remorse” (Meeting with President Roh Tae Woo).

This is one of how many? I stopped counting at 13, if Japan drops claim for the rocks would South Korea finally accept the heartfelt remorse of Japan? Really most Japanese including me have nothing against the Proud Korean People, using Japan as a "punching bag" rubs us the wrong way.

This, coming from a guy who denied his birth in Japan in his autobiography.

Do not forget, that Koreans are Han people also. They invaded Japan a long time ago and forgot about their own culture, and at that time, there was not much of it anyway.

They should give all the islands back to Japan that were forgotten, and quit complaining about that short colonization of Korea.

The Koreans invaded Japan first and did a pretty good job of controlling it.

Japangal. it was not a short colonization. And Japanese young people (and old people) need to learn as much about the much more relevant 20th century history as they spend on Sengoku and Jomon periods. While there are some informed people, I would say more than half of Japanese don't know about the suffering of other countries caused by Japan. Which is why every August, Japanese watch sad TV shows and feel sorry for themselves, and declare that war is wrong because they suffered.

I really wish Japan and Korea could get on better.

There is no correct history. History is man-made.

maybe you mean man-bought

ABSOLUTELY! Too many people here think that japan was the victim in all situations.
