What an irony. This woman is said to be the former "comfort woman" from the Korean War, not from WWII. Plus, she was anti-American and insulted the U.S. with dirty words at a demo in May 2017. And suddenly she became pro-American...and Trump hugged her.

The attendance of the 88-year-old South Korean woman, Lee Yong Soo, at Tuesday's banquet

So Trump hugged this woman? Hard to tell which is the bigger conman.

South Korean scholars find her testimony not credible. Read to see why.

They are easily toppled by the voices of people. So, it was necessary for them.

Yes, it's called the democracy.

A concept not well understood in authoritarian Japan that never and ever had democracy in its 1600 year history.

Actually Japan has had a democracy since 1952 when the US occupation ended. China had a democracy between 1912-1949 when it was the Republic of China. In contrast Korea has NEVER had a democracy in it's entire history, even the post Korean War ROK was a democracy in name and a dictatorship in practice.

Speaking of pathetic, great post! Why not walk up to a former sex-slave and tell her how laughable she is, or head on over to Dokdo with a Japanese passport and see what happens?

What's laughable are the Koreans who can't understand how their government is acting on the international stage, not the poor comfort women themselves. Although, bringing up poor examples like the one above is clear indication that they don't understand the issue of why it's pathetic.

Even if you provide bullet points for why the actions by the Korean government is pitiful, they will never understand because they are so brainwashed into believing the garage they are taught since they were a young child.

The comfort women issue was "resolved" between the two governments already. So bringing her in, who is against the agreement, is not upholding such an agreement by the Korean side.

As for the shrimp, why bring up an issue of contested territory except to spite? They purposely did so by naming it on the menu.

Bringing these two issues up on a state function illustrates the mentality the Koreans had when they hosted the US.

It is not really Japan's place to comment on what happens in Korea, is it?

Really? Then it's not Korea's place to comment on what happens in Japan right? Goes both ways.

If only Japan and & Korea (politicians) could both grow up and see the light?

This century will bring a lot of change and it behoves both countries to make alliances which will add to their ability to survive.....

Japan, just ignore the petulant korean children. Let them be silly and immature

Korean children? More like the other way around, historically speaking. Japan is the younger here.

"giving the most in donations after only Taiwan"

Actually 5th, but don't let facts get in your way.

Yumster: "Once again, the pathetic Koreans trying to justify its country's laughable"

Speaking of pathetic, great post! Why not walk up to a former sex-slave and tell her how laughable she is, or head on over to Dokdo with a Japanese passport and see what happens?

Sorry, but the only thing more pathetic than the content of someone berating a woman who was raped and forced into prostitution (proven fact it happened) are the people engaging in the denial and berating.

" Anyone with an ounce of intelligence will see how pathetic a country can get when they will serve Dokdo shrimp for a state banquet."

Ummm.... no... just people with a whole lot of misdirected personal anger. Do you spit quite as much on the kin of the Japanese abductees and Hibakusha?

-2 ( +8 / -10 )

I think in Korea, the government is not well established. They are easily toppled by the voices of people. So, it was necessary for them.

2 ( +7 / -5 )

Once again, the pathetic Koreans trying to justify its country's laughable actions to spite Japan.

They will spew out any illogical excuses and think that it is normal for a country to act that way.

Japan needs to understand that any agreements made by Korea equates to a deal made with an irrational country. Anyone with an ounce of intelligence will see how pathetic a country can get when they will serve Dokdo shrimp for a state banquet.

OssanAmerica: "South Korea unilaterally occupied the disputed island and refused THREE times to settle the issue at the ICJ. Which country is the one who is "stealing"?"

The ICJ is a non-binding body -- the same one Japan refuses to go to for the Kuriles and Senkakus, the latter because they feel "there is no issue of sovereignty", same as Korea feels. Pot meet Kettle, my friend.

-5 ( +7 / -12 )

OssanAmerica: "Disgraceful behavior on the part of South Korea"

Wrong. Disgraceful are the protests with their rationale that "sexual slavery of Koreans by the IJA did not happen"; something you yourself claim. They would not have done this if Japan acknowledged and did not try to cover up the truth. And once again, their protests here serve only to further interest in the truth, save for the denialists who seethe in anger that the issue has been brought up again (while demanding something be done about the abductees, since Japan was victim in that case).

No, my friend. "disgraceful" is the denial, and the reactions by right-wing Japanese and wannabes about history. Disgraceful is claiming to be apologetic without saying specifically the wrong doings, then paying Yasukuni and/or visiting it, with lawmakers and politcians calling "comfort women" a propaganda issue that "never happened" the next day or even the day of. Disgraceful is denegrating the REAL victims and crying foul that you are the victim for your wrongdoings being brought to light when you have tried to bury them.

-1 ( +11 / -12 )

Poor Japan, forever the victim.

Maybe this is why Japan wants to steal the Liancourt Rocks from Korea so bad, the tasty shrimp.

South Korea unilaterally occupied the disputed island and refused THREE times to settle the issue at the ICJ. Which country is the one who is "stealing"?

5 ( +12 / -7 )

Disgraceful behavior on the part of South Korea, and goes to show just how far the North Korea and China backed Chong Dae Hyup has control over the government. No wonder South Korea is betraying us on THAAD with China. South Korea can not be trusted to live up to a state to state agreement. Second time they've screwed Japan over.

4 ( +12 / -8 )

@ cucashopboy

Dokdo shrimp was the best quality shrimp available in Korea, so it was used.

Maybe this is why Japan wants to steal the Liancourt Rocks from Korea so bad, the tasty shrimp.

-8 ( +4 / -12 )

Why, Japan? Why couldn't you just let it pass by? One, it's their country. And two, yes it was totally a political (douche) move but what exactly is Japan expecting to get from protesting?

This! Someone who understands. Japan should've just ignored this.

2 ( +6 / -4 )

Kinda childish on. It’s sides. Japan’s protest somewhat less childish though. Korea knew well this event will be covered by global media. But the symbolism that has nothing to do between US and Korea is ridiculous.

1 ( +7 / -6 )

Japan can't have it's cake and eat it too. One off payments can't erase years of abuse and debasement. Perish the disgusting thought. Unless GENUINE acts of contrition in the same vein as the holocaust are performed, acts like these must and should continue.

Fred Wallace - agree with you 100% but the serving the Dokdo shrimp was petty and childish!

-12 ( +1 / -13 )

Alvie Noakes

Perhaps an easily enraged 20 something year old liberal would be outraged by Japan’s actions, but there is such a thing as using the past to invoke nationalism in your population.

The leaders aren’t doing the right or positive thing by re igniting the fire, they are appealing to their ring wing cronies.

Dango Bango: "Japan, just ignore the petulant korean children. Let them be silly and immature"

Speaking of silly, immature, and petulant, great post!

toshiko: "Which Korea Japan will support?"

How about the one that came to Japan's aid in 2011, giving the most in donations after only Taiwan, and also sending assistance on the ground? Unless you'd rather support a madman pointing nukes at you because you are too childish to accept historical fact and take a little shrimp and an old lady who suffered as insults.

South Korea is right to rebuff Japan, and should just ignore any cries and complaints. The islands are theirs; they administer and live on them year around, and why can't they serve shrimp from them? And just as Japan paraded out the abductees' relatives and ask presidents to visit Hiroshima, what is the problem with South Korea asking that history be recognized as well?

-2 ( +10 / -12 )

Which Korea Japan will support?

North Korea, with its pachinko profits.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

SK is on the brink of nuclear and military annhilation and even then their main priorities are to snidely attack Japan over damn shrimps and some military prostitute. SK is no ally or friend to Japan and I am rapidly losing sympathy over their dire situation in regards to NK

3 ( +12 / -9 )

The ONLY reason they invited Lee Yong Soo is to stick their stick their finger up at Japan, and yet they get upset when Japan called them out for it. Same with serving 'dokdo shrimp', even though they know Trump would have preferred a steak or hamburger.

The 'hug' betwen Trump and Lee was positively cringeworthy. Like Trump was also saying "why the f** are they making me hug this woman."

7 ( +13 / -6 )

Why, Japan? Why couldn't you just let it pass by? One, it's their country. And two, yes it was totally a political (douche) move but what exactly is Japan expecting to get from protesting?

10 ( +14 / -4 )

It's only Japan that is delusional about its past and would therefore take offense to this act that is brought forth as a consequence of Japan's belligerence attitude in regards to its terrible past. Every other nation is quite aware of Japan's past. The only people that are not are, quite sadly, Japan's own information deprived citizens and a handful of fanbois and weeaboos.

-3 ( +11 / -14 )

Lee has spoken widely of her suffering from being forced into sex slavery by the Japanese during World War II. She was one of the about 70 guests the South Korean government had invited to the banquet.

As if the poor woman hadn't suffered enough, she has to sit in the presence of a sexual predator. How messed up is that?

9 ( +13 / -4 )

Which Korea Japan will support?

2 ( +7 / -5 )

Japan just makes itself look ridiculous with these protests; petty, mean-spirited, immature, history-denying. The SK government can invite who they like as its their banquet. The lack of self-awareness, the sense of arrogance and self-entitlement is nauseating. This stuff gets noticed all over the world, too.

Bickering about shrimp, for Pete's sake. How puerile is that?

-1 ( +15 / -16 )

Do not underestimate the politic power of shrimps.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

Lol maybe all those saying SK needs to grow up, drop the matter, it's all in the past should ask themselves this. If we lived in a world devoid of holocaust remembrance entities, if one complained about the injustices committed therein, would you boldly spout the same garbage?

Japan can't have it's cake and eat it too. One off payments can't erase years of abuse and debasement. Perish the disgusting thought. Unless GENUINE acts of contrition in the same vein as the holocaust are performed, acts like these must and should continue.

While visiting S. Korea, together with a number of Japanese colleagues, our (not yet) potential Tier-1 supplier invited us to dinner. They did their best to offend the Japanese in all ways possible, including having so called "Atomic Bomb" beers (beer with a shot glass of alcohol dropped in it), Dokto fish (we were in the city of Busan). They invited us to a "third-party" (if you know what I'm talking about), the reasoning for this being "You don't have to force those girls to work there". We didn't go, and they didn't get the contract, and were extremely butthurt by this..

12 ( +20 / -8 )

I am so glad that the average Korean and Japanese people have such great relationships. The popularity of the two countries, between it's people, has never been much higher than now, with booming tourism on both sides.

If these mouth-pieces and politicians would get their heads out of their nether regions and act like adults, maybe they can learn to catch up with the rest!

10 ( +17 / -7 )

Would Trump have had any idea that this background symbolism was being played out?
