Live stream a few rocks on a remote island. As if anyone would be interested to watch it. is all just a stunt to get a reaction from Japan.

15 ( +21 / -6 )

New subliminal approach to brainwash people further? Which livestreaming of this and Shibuya intersection is more boring...

14 ( +19 / -5 )

I doubt there was anything interesting to view! Just a massive rock and the sea, with some seagulls flying alongside!

14 ( +16 / -2 )

South Korea going to live stream some rocks in the middle of the ocean.

Meanwhile, Hayabusa and Maezawa we going to MARS!!!!

13 ( +16 / -3 )

The show must go on!

12 ( +14 / -2 )

The ministry said the Internet service commencing Friday will enable citizens to easily see the South Korean-controlled islets anytime and from anywhere, adding that it seeks to increase the public's interest in and affinity toward the territory.

Relegate this infantile country to the sandbox. Probably funner watching some rocks live online than watching their country not winning medals in the Olympics. Eat your heart SK. Enjoy your live entertainment.

12 ( +19 / -7 )

And it really was additionally necessary to install and announce that exactly during the games and atomic bombing memorial time span?

11 ( +15 / -4 )

Moon must be in some kind of trouble. Left or Right: When in trouble, blame Japan.

Stay classy, S. Korea!

11 ( +18 / -7 )

Korea is like the jealous sibling that just insists on being as annoying as possible even though it reflects poorly on them.

11 ( +19 / -8 )

The Liancourt Rocks are a symbol of anti-Japan nationalism. South Korea is so obsessed with them that people all over the country cheered when some athlete swam all the way there.

I once saw a video of some foreign exchange students being tricked into saying “Dokdo is Korean” in broken Korean.

Back when Trump talked to Kim Jong Un for the first time, South Korea cancelled its joint military drill with the U.S. along the border, yet it still did its regular drill on the rocks "in case of an invasion from Japan".

Just like its obsession with Japan, Korea’s obsession with the rocks is abnormal and pathetic.

10 ( +19 / -9 )

I wonder what does South Korea want to gain from this? I'm neutral on this issue, but provoking each other doesn't help.

10 ( +12 / -2 )

@Sven Asai

And it really was additionally necessary to install and announce that exactly during the games and atomic bombing memorial time span?

Well, it's South Korea, well-known for its reasonable, gentlemanly political actions toward Japan.

10 ( +19 / -9 )

One of the conditions for a country to be able to lay claim to a faraway island in the ocean is the "effective control" of it.

That's the reason why China is busy building airfields on disputed islands in South China Sea. It must be for the same reason that South Korea is trying to turn Takeshima or Tokdo in Korean to a citadel and a sightseeing spot, and now make live streaming from there.

The fact is that Japan must react always against every these stupid actions of South Korea to claim it's sovereignty over Takeshima, or once you start ignoring these STUPID provocations, Int'l law would judge as if Japan gives it up. Although those Japan-haters always laughing at and treating Japan equally with this insane country, Japan is a victim being forced to get on every ridiculous actions from SK's BS. You are just forced to get involved.

Japanese tourists are welcome at the Liancourt Rocks. No need to get special permit or anything, just record passport number at the Ferry terminal when buying ticket. As long as Japanese tourist doesn't bring banned item(aka the Rising Sun Flag or any display of "Takeshima is Japanese territory" banner) or is on the blacklist(Korean government keeps a black list of Japanese rightwingers likely to cause trouble), Japanese can enjoy Liancourt Rocks, assuming they are lucky enough to land. Like I said, landing is allowed only when weather permits, which is 30% of tour season days. If weather doesn't permit landing, the ferry will circle around the Liancourt Rocks slowly.

You can tell the sickness and stupidity of this country. As the poster above saying, the tour all depends on the weather conditions, you may be able to land on or may not, even may not approach to the rocks. What kind of venture is it? and the country is calling it a famous tourist spot even welcoming Japanese.

It is the Japanese government that urges Japanese citizens to not visit the Liancourt Rocks, as Japanese citizens visiting the Liancourt Rocks can be used as evidence of Korea sovereignty in any potential ICJ trial.

This is totally different from the Diaoyu Islands, where all Japanese civilians are banned from landing on them, or approach within 1 km from its coastline.

Japan knows moderation, or controlled claim not to provoke the counterpart further. Those Japan haters call it coward. Why not, Japan has been in fetters by UN, fabricated narratives, article 9, What more these morons expect Japan to do?

10 ( +19 / -9 )

South Korea has live cams on disputed Islands.

Japan could follow suit on the Senkaku's so people around the world can keep an eye on the Chinese transgressions into Japanese territory in real time.

Smile, your on live cam.

10 ( +10 / -0 )

There is not much to cheer about Korean athletes in this Olympics games with their poor results, especially in comparison with a great success by Japanese athletes. Every attempts to try to discredit the Games by Korean athletes and Korean medias have failed so far. So there is a very good reason why they decided to do this in the middle of the Tokyo Olympics. Perhaps this live streaming can help alleviate their frustrations little bit. I feel sorry for them. Please be sympathetic to our friends, folks!

Petty actions for a petty country

10 ( +11 / -1 )

Samit BasuToday  07:06 pm JST

@1glenn

The two countries could agree in principle to the joint development of the area around the islets

Zero possibility of that happening because in the eyes of Koreans

1) Liancourt Rocks are not in dispute.

2) Korea can now more than defend Liancourt Rocks in a war against Japan, meaning Korea could end the war with net gains in territory.

Typical example for Japan to decide to abolish SPR entitled to Zainichi and kick them all out of here.

9 ( +11 / -2 )

Just another provoking action.

Is there really nothing better to do and to use the money for people who actual need money.

9 ( +9 / -0 )

Iron LadAug. 6  11:03 pm JST

This South Korea vs Japan is some of the most stupid ever.

Japan should have been the bigger men instead of this childish child.

Japan has and continues to be the "bigger man". Since 1952. South Korea continues to be the "Childish Child" (lol). Refusal to settle at the ICJ is the biggest evidence of this behavior.

9 ( +12 / -3 )

I wonder if that condition stipulated by international law is just and correct.

I therefore suggest that a clause be added to the sovereignty-stipulating international law to the effect that no country can change the status quo or the physical features of an island when its sovereignty is in dispute.

8 ( +13 / -5 )

elephant200Today  04:56 pm JST

@voiceofokinawa: Does japan has documents or written text about those Isles? They can bring it out to proof their reason to cliam!

As soon as South Korea decides to act like a civilized and honorable country and agree to settle the Liancourt Rocks dispute at the ICJ, Japan will present their evidence. Japan has requested ICJ settlement three times starting in 1952 when South Korea unilaterally occupied them. Each time South Korea has refused. Obviously they have no confidence in their own evidence to support their claim before an impartial international forum. A nation of cowards.

8 ( +14 / -6 )

Sigh, and to think so many criticize Japan for being the "aggressive" one.

8 ( +10 / -2 )

I feel sorry for anyone who willingly shoves this propaganda down their throats.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

8 ( +8 / -0 )

@Harry_Gatto

S. Korea took Japan's Island after the War ended in the 1950s. WW2 over in 1945. Do you understand the difference?

Japan's Army gone. Navy gone. USA watching every move. That's when your brave Korea came. Many many years after WW2 ended. When they knew Japan could not respond or do anything in return. Completely an illegal, weak and pathetic move.

7 ( +11 / -4 )

That's not the case. Korea already ran mock simulation trials in Europe and Korea's odd of a victory was 99%.

Korea has accumulated a vast trove of Japan's own documents prior to 1945 proving Japan considered the Liancourt Rocks belonging to Korean province, everything from Japanese text books to Imperial Japanese Navy's navigation chart, even if not counting Meiji government's own 1877 edict officially excluding the Liancourt Rocks from territorial definition of Japan.

The only reason Korea won't go to ICJ is because it's a domestic political suicide; the very act of going to ICJ trial casts doubt on the sovereignty of the Liancourt Rocks, which amounts to treason, and has nothing to do with confidence, because Korea can disprove with Japan's own documents that Japan considered the Liancourt Rocks was terra nullius until 1905.

Of course, Japanese government won't tell its population that it has a mountain of evidences, Japanese documents to be no less, against Japan's claims.

Laughable. Almost everything you post seems turning out to be false. Japan officially announced territorial claim over Takeshima under the effective control of Iki-Toushi of Shimane prefecture in 1905. How the heck did Japan have to consider those belong to Korean province. It was Shimane prefecture.

The Republic of Korea has never demonstrated any clear basis for its claims that it had taken effective control over Takeshima prior to Japan's effective control over Takeshima and reaffirmation of its territorial sovereignty in 1905.

7 ( +12 / -5 )

And Korea can prove beyond reasonable doubt just with Japanese official government documents that Meiji government knew the Liancourt Rocks weren't terra nullius in 1905. Hence Japan's whole terra nullius claim falls apart and this is why Korea was given a 99% probability of victory by European jurists.

Link Please.

And the scary part is that Korea have had many help from Japan's leftwing professors who assisted in helping Korea gather Japanese documents to build its case to disprove beyond reasonable doubt on Japan's claims of terra nullius.

Yep. Zainichi Koreans and those unwillingly naturalized sure would help you

Remember, the whole Japanese case is built around the 1905 claim of terra nullius. And if Korea can prove with Japanese government documents that Japan knew it wasn't terra nullius, it's game over. And that's before introducing the record of Korean fishing tax levied on Japanese fishermen fishing around the Liancourt Rocks until 1903.

And yet, The Republic of Korea has never demonstrated any clear basis for its claims that it had taken effective control over Takeshima prior to Japan's effective control over Takeshima and reaffirmation of its territorial sovereignty in 1905. Depending mostly only on Japan-side documents is the proof for that.

7 ( +11 / -4 )

@samit

Thanks for the link but

Firstly, 竹島外一島 where that small island was meant to be Juk-do which was too obvious to prove.

Secondly you said Korea can prove beyond reasonable doubt just with Japanese official government documents that Meiji government knew the Liancourt Rocks weren't terra nullius in 1905.

Nonetheless, your link proved neither that Takeshima was not terra nullius nor that Korea had effective control over Takeshima.

Although you are better than SJ sticking to no-bamboo narrative, No matter how much you try to play Korean words, like Ulleung-do、Usan-do, Juk-do, Dok, Dol, ... to the left, or to the right , you cannot keep deceiving anyone.

7 ( +11 / -4 )

Livestreaming a couple of rocks in the ocean. Sounds like riveting viewing. Better than watching paint dry.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

Hello Samit Basu

In the impossible worst case like Dajo-kan directive 1877 was meant that Liancourt Rocks(the islands in this dispute) were to be excluded from Japan's acknowledged territory , what makes you and Hosaka's ilk think South Korea would win at International court by 99% chance?

The 1877 directive did not state those were Korean's territory at all and you have nothing to persuade ICJ to judge those are inherent territory of the dynasty on the peninsula.

Spanish map which touched Moon Jae-in recently has just proved they know nothing Isn't it?

7 ( +7 / -0 )

Of course, there are some historical documents about that islands, also an official ministry division installed and working, and in Tokyo you can even visit a National Museum for Territorial Integrity and Sovereignty to learn more, or at the moment better comb through all their websites while still pandemic rules everywhere, that’s all very interesting and educative. Most will be of course about the Northern territories and fewer about the Senkaku island group, but Takeshima is surely covered too, although I haven’t checked it now. JT has also earlier reported about that museum for example, please refer.

Hello Kitty 321Today  06:20 pm JST

@Harry_Gatto

Actually, the allies offered the Kuril Islands to Russia at Yalta in return for its participation in the Pacific War. Furthermore, Japan renounced all right, title and claim to them in the San Francisco Treaty

Dead wrong. The Allies offered the Northern Kuriles, because the 4 islands that constitute the Southern Kuriles did not fall under the allied definition of territory taken by war. The 4 islands were negotiated beteen Russia and Japan in 1855. Stalin deliberately broke the Allied declarations by invading and occupying the 4 islands after Japan had already announced unconditional surrender.

The Liancourt Rocks are a very popular tourist destination.

That's just sad.

@kennyG

Secondly you said Korea can prove beyond reasonable doubt just with Japanese official government documents that Meiji government knew the Liancourt Rocks weren't terra nullius in 1905.

*Indeed, that 1877 Daijo-kan decision proves beyond reasonable doubt *BECAUSE IT INCLUDES A MAP.

*The map shows beyond reasonable doubt** that Imperial Japanese government ruled in 1877 that both Ullng Islands and Liancourt Rocks didn't belong to Japan.*

It includes a map? No. That Map 磯竹島略圖was not created by Dajo-kan and his men nor official attachment to the Dajo-kan directive 1877. It was submitted by Shimane prefecture along with other documents to Ministry of Interior when the prefecture made an official inquiry if it could involve Ulleung-do (磯)竹島 into it’s land(territorial) registry. This inquiry(and hence the map) was simply kept together with the directive which Hosaka claimed it is Dajo-kan directive map. Of course Shimane prefecture correctly captured Riancourt Rocks along with Ulleung-do while Korea never did during the same days,

The confusion about 外一島 and all those namings of the islands including non-existent Argonaute island were all cleared up 3years later by official survey 1880 and Kitazawa Masanobu through 竹島考証 1881 which Yuji Hosaka and his ilk very conveniently ignored except only cherry picking.

*Try to persuade international jurists of ICJ that "Takeshima" in the 1877 isn't "Takeshima" of 2021 that Japan's claiming. Japan would be laughed out of court room, especially when the *map clearly indicates what islands Japan's talking about regardless of naming.

https://10point.wiki.fc2.com/image/168187.jpg?1628302845

Confusion did exist yes but ICJ would not laugh and kick Japan out of court room. All it takes for Japan to show the confused Dutch and French maps and 1881 Kitazawa research

Regardless, 1877 Dajo-kan directive itself is not a proof of the fact Liancourt Rocks had been already territorially claimed by Korea. South Korea basically has nothing meaningful or persuasive to prove it and that is why Hosaka and his ilk do nothing but nit-picking on Japan’s documents because Japan had so many of those proving Riancourt Rocks as it’s inherent islands

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Rather than wasting their time and engergy on their complex towards Japan like this, they should have been training harder for the Olympics. South Korea won zero gold medals in Taekwondo- their national sport.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

South Koreans are obsessed with these islands. I'm sure there are more than a handful of brainwashed nutters that would watch it.

I'm picturing some South Korean eyes glued to their computer monitor watching these rocks. Maybe even the whole family watching.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

S. Korea took advantage of Japan's defeat in 1945 to steal land, territory, water, in the early 1950s with no threat of Japan doing anything in return since we renounced war and had no navy left.

That's when the brave Korea came. So strong, just landed and planted a flag. No fight, no resistance, took so much courage to steal land when you know nothing Will Happen To You In Return.

5 ( +21 / -16 )

The only reason Korea won't go to ICJ is because it's a domestic political suicide; the very act of going to ICJ trial casts doubt on the sovereignty of the Liancourt Rocks, which amounts to treason, and has nothing to do with confidence, because Korea can disprove with Japan's own documents that Japan considered the Liancourt Rocks was terra nullius until 1905.

What kind of poor excuse is this? What about Korean Rule of Law, Separation of Powers, blah, blah, blah, which you always claim far more advanced than Japan? Who the heck cares your domestic and political suicide for this international issue hanging over for this length?

First, officially announce to accept compulsory jurisdiction by ICJ and then face the trial especially if you have 99% confidence.

5 ( +9 / -4 )

"increase the public's interest" rather means keep bullying Japan and continue brainwash Koreans and the rest of the world by over and over breaching the 1965 contract. Also South Korea's government sponsored worldwide available, foreigners targeted, English speaking TV channel "Arirang TV" is doing "Dokdo" reports every two hours or so. First capture the audience by K-pop, food, culture etc. and then throw in a few minutes of "Dokdo is Korea since ever and forever". It is a very easy and good working manipulating tool. All the weather forecasts concentrate at least a few seconds on "Dokdo" in the "East Sea".

Also Korean activists found a very simple way to sneak their POV into other publications like maps that are depending on Openstreetmap. Every island stone was named "Dokdo" there, even coming up with new flags like "Wrong name: Takeshima" even when that was for the Japanese language only. The Sea of Japan is hiddenly named "East Sea", so it doesn't appear like this at first on OSM but on other maps like Mapquest, when switched to satellite view it says "East Sea" prominently first. Those activists are very good and I miss a counterpart of that from Japan. South Korea really needs to be put in their place soon before it's completely getting out of hand.

Best thing to do now is ignoring this, otherwiese it will be on the news and people will of course check it out, seeing some superimpositioned text stating Korea's propaganda. No doubt the cameras will prominently be advertised wherever possible.

5 ( +8 / -3 )

Someone needs to attach some explosives to those rocks and settle this.

3 ( +11 / -8 )

According to South Korea, Korean medieval documents are replete with descriptions of Usan-do, which they claim is today's Liancourt Rocks (Take-shima/Dok-do). Japan, on the other hand, says Usan-do in the Korean medieval documents does not refer to Liancourt Rocks but to Jukdo or Ulleungdo or some imaginary island lying between the Korean Peninsula and Ulleungdo.

So, there is a conflict in views about the island’s history between Japan and South Korea, for starters, and so its sovereignty status is certainly in the limbo.

This whole situation reminds me of Terry Pratchett's Jingo. It's a bit of a shame that in reality things are unlikely to work out the same way as in fiction...

1 ( +1 / -0 )

The two countries could agree in principle to the joint development of the area around the islets, in the future, in the case that development is deemed desirable. It does not seem that they are worth fighting over.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

South Korea is flexing.

-2 ( +6 / -8 )

Of course the timing is designed to have a dig at and upset Japan while the olympics are on.

That's SK playing their hand - bluff - to garner the biggest impact. Tokyo always falls for it instead of just ignoring it. In such a scenario SK always wins the propaganda game.

And regardless of historical ties / claims by both sides, SKs hand trumps all because it occupies and controls the rocks.

The History of Civilization is defined by these "takings" and in many/most cases the new owners of territory only relinquish such through war. Sometimes negotiations and money etc helps, but rarely.

So who wants to die for this?

No sane person I think.

What is your point? Dokdo IS a very famous tourist destination open for Koreans AND foreigners, only that travel slots are limited due to adverse weather and need to protect the island's ecosystem from overtourism. And even if it wasn't a tourist spot, Japan still wont get it back unless they want to face Korea's Navy, no matter how much Japanese nationalists whine and cry about it.
