S Korea to stop using Olympic flag with disputed isles

Unilaterally "claimed" by South Korea in 1952, populated afterwards with 99% South Korean government employees. Bears zero similarity to the Southern Kuriles which became Japanese by a negotiated treat between Russia and Japan back in 1855.

Korea has now made the right decision at last. Actually they had a problem not too long ago where they left Japan off the map completely. End of September 2017, really not too long ago! No lessons learned? I am not surprised Japan gets irritated each time.

Thanks Cyburnetic. Don't get me wrong, I am not avoiding the subject of that terrible war crime. But that comment had no place in this story about the flags in 2018. I am surprised that JT have permitted an obviously-conflicted journalist from Korea to take a cheap shot at Japanese hisory on the back of another story.

If this journalist wants to stay true to the golden rule of independent reporting, then they should also have mentioned Korea's current naval coastguard occupation of Takeshima.

I would agree but in this context, it made sense. The flag is supposed to represent the unification of Korea so having a flag with one Korea on it was a sensible idea.

the point of the flag is to show unity. All korea together. Hope for the future and no nuclear anailation.

Tokyo brutally colonised the peninsula from 1910-45, and used hundreds of thousands of Korean women as sex slaves during the Second World War.

Why the need to mention this (yet again) in an article about the 2018 Winter Olympics and a dispute over those flags?

I don't think Japan overreacted here. Korea chose to show only one of its many islands, and it chose these obscure little islands above all others. Pretty obviously political for the last islands in the region to ever be taken by force.

Yeah. I think it was uncalled for to make this kind of statement during the Olympics. This is a time for nations to shelve their differences and come together.

Civilian use duing the olympic events is permitted, meaning Japanese TV broadcasters will be busy censoring thousands of them being waved in real time.
