Actually, I'm not even sure if NK is that big of an issue to SK.
NK would rather destroy Tokyo to intimidate the US than go after SK. Sure, it would be nice if SK and NK can form some kind of economic union, but in terms of immediate threat, NK isn't it.

Why is Japan even in the conversation? Their main dispute with Japan is on some insignificant island and some unresolved wartime historical issues. I doubt either of these issues are as big as China, US and NK.
South Korea's primary issue is NK and the trade war between China and the US, not Japan.
I do think it is wise for South Korea is look beyond China to avoid becoming too dependent on them. The THAAD issue and the Chinese boycotts probably gave Koreans a wake-up call and many businesses are shifting away from China.

A US President is very unlikely to snub a South Korean President no matter how different their political philosophies. The relationship is too important for that. Kim and his Krypt Keeper sister are another matter.

More precisely, a nation squeezed for centuries by a Northeast Asia's big power, to make it up, squeezing the other big power to maintain its mental health.

They are assuming that Biden and Kim Jong Un would want to meet with the President of South Korea. So they could be waiting a long time without meeting anyone.

A nation which defends itself might be overrun and fade into history, but a nation which does not defend itself is doomed to fade into history.

These two are not good candidates for Korea, which is also a big deal for Japan given that Korea is a close economic partner with sensitive relationship with Japan.
It's sad to see people becoming cornered into choosing a president of the lesser evil which is evident across the world not just Korea.
