Goodbye South Korea.

The GSOMIA termination is supported by the majority(55%) of Korean voters, and Moon faced another backlash if he actually renewed the GSOMIA against the public will.

Interesting that you would point out Moon’s incompetence in painting himself into a corner by stoning the fury of the populace to the point that his decision was to either act in the country’s best interests and be hated, or act against his country’s best interests but be supported by the frenzied populace.

Pure and utter incompetence.

Day 38 of this trade row reported on this website, and still not one valid reason from the anti-Japan crowd why the Japanese government was wrong to remove South Korea from the white list.

I do not believe the majority of South Koreans want to be under China's influence, much less be united with North Korea on their terms. These sane people will take Moon out of office, and probably put him in jail like past SK presidents. As of this moment. South Korea has ruined it's relationship with not just Japan, but with the United States and North Korea as well.

This is just proof that the both Moon and Korean voters are not very smart. Moon for letting his popularity take precedent over national security and the people for letting their hatred of Japan do the same.

Moon's decision was in the best interests of the country

No it wasn't. It's an emotional based response based on anti-Japan hatred, that puts the country in a lesser standing as far as regional security is concerned.

Pure and utter ineptitude.

S. Korea did not care if China benefited, if the security environment changed especially for them by leaving GSOMIA. Watch Arirang their news outlet, all their generals advice against leaving, how S. Korea benefits a lot more than Japan, how Tokyo has dozens of satellites Korea uses for information.

Basu you can't threaten Japan with GSOMIA when you Koreans benefit the most from it.

You can't demand and make threats towards Japan. Seriously, who do you think you people are?

13 ( +17 / -4 )

Trump, Pence and Pompeo are very angry at South Korea for terminating the security alliance. IF the rumored military coup against Moon does not happen soon, the USA will begin making plans to withdraw troops from South Korea. THAT is South Koreas biggest nightmare situation, no longer being defended by the USA.

Communist China will be licking their lips, like a wolf looking at a sheep.

The scrapping of GSOMIA has more symbolic meaning than practical consequences.

SK is basically saying, “we don’t like Japan and the US, and they’re no longer our friends. Can we talk now, Kim, please, pretty, please?”

11 ( +14 / -3 )

It seems only matter of time S Korea belongs to China, out of US led allies. S Korea will terminate GSOMIA with the US, but not soon, after both Koreas become one Korea. That is Moon wants.

Goodbye South Korea? How so?

Canceling the sharing of the intel doesn’t affect China at because Japan would still receive all relevant information due to mutual allies. What this entire issue between Japan and Korea does is accelerates China’s continuous growth as the leader of Asia. They are taking more and more everyday and this fighting makes it difficult for Japan and South Korea to maintain footing in Asia as other countries would look towards stable solutions.

It is not so much covert anymore... SK basically has jeopardised BOTH Japan and the USA as Japan and US had shared security info with SK. Just that SK has not announced the "break" in deal with the US yet. So the doublcross is not evident and open... not covert. Which meas the sale for F-15 may mean a way to "please" the business minded Trump while possibly "covertly" giving China and NK the technology behind the F-15. F-15 is still one of the most formidable fighters today with a no loss record in a dog fight.

In any case, SK as with China by their actions have "proven" that they cannot be trusted any more.

And apparently their immediate target is Japan.

Those 3 nations; SK, NK, and China has for the past 2 decades have made all the media efforts to denounce and demonize Japan as if still a WWII enemy of the world while taking advantage of the post war humility and taking the extremely fine technological advances Japan possess in the name of economic assistance for a developing country and as post war damages.

Now we as guests in Japan, must consider our status here and the safety and security for our families.

All 3 countries may no longer feel that Japanese high tech is needed and can be sacrificed, since they have already gotten the high tech factories with fully trained experienced staff trained by Japanese and American technicians.

On the world stage, is Japan that important now? Yes, Japan is an important ally, (and will always be high up in Division 2) but has no real influence anymore.

Not bad! Not a bad idea is president  "Moon Jae-In" scrap that outdated military alliances with US and Japan! You know the US military were unwelcome and unpopular in South Korea! The South Koreans hates US supporting military dictatorship for decades! "Paid the debts" time is due!  By the way if the U.S. can doing covert operations in provoking Hong Kong riots, why China cannot doing the same by sabotaging the US stronghold in far east, China has the leverage in Seoul, their fifth column is straight inside the "Blue Tile palace"!

This is a no brainer these two love doves should already know. They’re so engulfed in their pride that they’re making the world, and indeed this part of the world much more dangerous. They’ll be asleep should an attack be forthcoming. I hope this isn’t what it takes to wake them up.

@Strangerland

either act in the country’s best interests and be hated, or act against his country’s best interests but be supported by the frenzied populace.

Moon's decision was in the best interests of the country and supported by population.

@OssanJapan

These sane people will take Moon out of office

Moon's party has twice the poll number(40%) of the main opposition conservative party(19%). It is just like Japan, but reversed.

@BeerDeliveryGuy

The scrapping of GSOMIA has more symbolic meaning than practical consequences.

Japan just lost the real-time radar feed and now must come up with a new missile defense architecture from scratch; one that focused on terminal stage interception and not mid-course interception.

-16 ( +0 / -16 )

Northeast Asians help northeast Asians, there is nothing wrong. More than that, northeast Asians will defend northeast Asians, as simple as that. Japanese are happy to do anything for Chinese, that is the fate, as long as Japan still considers herself as northeast Asian state.

-17 ( +1 / -18 )

Washington hopes that Seoul will change its mind by then.

No change in Moon's mind unless Abe san changes his and undo trade retaliations.

The GSOMIA termination is supported by the majority(55%) of Korean voters, and Moon faced another backlash if he actually renewed the GSOMIA against the public will. Moon can't do it unless Abe san offers something that is good enough to explain the GSOMIA renewal to Korean public.

So if the US wants the GSOMIA termination reversed, twisting Abe's arm is the fastest way to do it, not Moon's who is a former spec-ops paratrooper specialized in sabotage and explosives, an outstanding soldier personally commended by Dictator Chun Doo-hwan who was the commander of Moon before he took the power via coup, the fact that dodged Moon's political career as a human rights lawyer.

Over half of Koreans support end of GSOMIA with Japan: poll

SEOUL, Aug. 26 (Yonhap) -- More than half of South Koreans support Seoul's recent decision not to renew a military information-sharing pact, named the General Security of Military Information Agreement (GSOMIA), with Japan, a poll showed Monday.

The survey of 501 adults nationwide conducted last Friday by Realmeter found that 54.9 percent favorably evaluated the South Korean government's decision the previous day to terminate GSOMIA with Japan. Of the supporters, 35.3 percent called it a "very good decision," while the remaining 19.6 percent defined it as a good decision.
