South K is really no ally.
Yubaru
And the relations continue to cause people on both sides to get their panties bunched up because the media constantly reminds everyone about something that happened 100 years ago!
I don't see the constant historical references being made about other countries, only when it comes to Japan and it's former enemies.
Probably wont sell ad space, but if folks truly want to see peace and cooperation between the two countries, the media has a large part to play in it too.
Report the news, and let it go after that!

"If such activity repeats again, our military will respond strongly based on our response rules."
What will they do, lock onto them with fire control radar? Oh, wait...
Wallace Fred
Just one question. What would happen if the roles were reversed? Think about it for a moment.
After that reflection, ponder on this.
abe and his right wing regime have failed at genuine policy after all so called arrows missed their mark. And now that America is making some strides with north korea, the scary boogeyman is nolonger that. So what do all failed governments do to claim legitimacy? Create another boogeyman to keep the masses dull and enthralled. And of course a sprinkle of good ol'xenophobia/racism serves to hype the perpetual tension required to remain in power.
Samit Basu
@extanker
They are authorized to open warning shots against Japanese patrol aircraft after repeated warnings and Japanese patrol aircraft do not turn back.
Ganbare Japan!
Every day now, more lies and anti-Japan rhetoric from SK. The Japanese patrol plane has every right to patrol there. The region is probably the most dangerous inthe world, so it is logical. Moon is in serious trouble domestically, and fears a coup. Whipping up hate on Japan is a vote winner.
Thats no revelation. Everyone already knew this. SK has never been an ally of Japan. They are strongest ally of Communist China.
Samit Basu
@Ganbare
Yes, but do it at a safe distance.
You have a right to drive on the highway, but you do not have the right to threaten others by being dangerously close.
kwatt
Where is the important video footage everyone wants to look at? Warship has cameras. Japan surveillance planes always fly at 150m altitude at least. This is not fighter jet. Never such too low. As long as S Koreans have malicious intentions about Japanese planes, it seems they probably see any plane like flying at such too low altitude, or try to provoke Japan because of FCR incident
fxgai
Better that the Japanese ain’t fly too close, and better that the Koreans don’t play with their radars.
Sure could use some adult supervision.
extanker
I'm sure SK will release some footage with a circle around a barely visible black dot set to some dramatic music in a day or two.
Updoot
Wait, so SK hasn't released any footage or proof, while Japan has the 'hey bro why you lock on?' video, and SK is trying to blame Japan?
Shouldn't they just release proof? Whats stopping them?
kwatt
As long as no video footage is shown, it does not seem any persuasive about any claim. It seems S Korean Navy wants to try to provoke Japan anyway because S Korea is/was defeated about FCR incident.
ndwariga
South Korea president is a Chinese puppet
extanker
Hey cut South Korea some slack, it takes time for their video editors to put the circle around the plane and add that music.
papigiulio
Like being at a kindergarten, but perhaps it's necessary to keep these two in control and at peace.
Will Goode
Hope you're not suggesting @papigiulio
Trump would make a good kindergarten cop like Arnold Shwartzanaga.
I think everyone's agreed the low flying came before any alleged lock on, so maybe the P1 should use binoculars next time.
extanker
If South Korea is dumb enough to shoot down a Japanese patrol plane just for flying too close, they would find it very lonely when all their allies turn against them.
The US would have gone to war with Russia a hundred times over if we shot at their planes every time they got too close to Alaska. And those were actual bombers, not patrol planes.

I am reminded of the line out of "The Hunt For Red October":
"This business will get out of control. It will get out of control and we'll be lucky to live through it."
commanteer
That is simply false. They have their own well-documented problems with China as well. Anyone saying Korea is a Chinese ally is just whipping up anti-Korean hysteria.
I say this as someone who thinks Korea is behaving poorly with regard to Japan, perpetuating lies and division. But the solution is not to perpetuate lies and division in the other direction. Somebody has to be the grown-up in the room.
Belrick
Many many times, Korea has turned to China for support in trade, politics and business. Please learn to read facts.
Wallace Fred
For the individuals baying aimlessly for blood, kindly answer this question
What would you do if the roles were reversed?
Your response should frame your train of thought.
Seriously, think hard about it.
commanteer
Many countries, including Japan, have turned to China for support in trade, politics and business. That's called international relations. It doesn't make the country an ally. Calling South Korea China's best ally is false, not a fact. You are not even aware that China banned group tours to Korea a few months back? That Korean pop stars were banned from Chinese television? Please learn to read facts.
Wallace Fred
I think facts are anathema to them.
commanteer
The problem with long periods of peace is they seem to create a number of people who are willing to risk war, or even eager for it.
m6bob
If SK claims that the Japanese plane is flying too low, then show the picture or video. Don't tell us they do not have one, even cars on our roads are being video-taped for transgression. I have this feeling SK is just trying to shield their sailors from scrutiny & hope this blows over OR a big country nearby is behind this & they are thinking of tourism.
Eppee
Not sure why everybody is asking for video, it's everywhere ....

Guess they needed something to even it out with that radar lock dispute awhile back. This is is pretty childish. Why can't both just forget it about it already. Most of us don't even care about what these military does most of the times. No shot was fired and no one was hurt.
kwatt
S Korea must show the footage (not edited) or proof to the world if S Korea insists the Japan patrol plane was threatening to the warship. I wonder how much threatening there? The patrol plane is neither fighter jet nor enemy plane. it seems to me the patrol plane was just doing their routine job there.
showchinmono
Korean media Chosun reporting S.K destroyer this time radio-called Japan P-3 (unarmed) more than 20 times to give warning in Koreanglish. See? They could speak to and respond to Japan P-1 if they got scared of threateningly low fly-by.
https://headlines.yahoo.co.jp/hl?a=20190123-00080154-chosun-kr
kwatt
If this is true, Everyone more really wants to see the video and to hear audio communication inside the control room just like Japan P-1 plane's cockpit did it.
Peter14
The video footage supplied by Japan showed clearly that the plane was flying low and close to the warship in military terms.
gelendestrasse
This constant bickering is exactly what China wants and Moon seems to support it with the antics. I can't imagine what they'll be saying when NK starts being belligerent again. You should remember who your friends are.
showchinmono
They could have spoken to or could have responded to Japan P-1 if they got scared of threateningly low fly-by

Let's make on thing clear, South Korea is a hostile enemy state and no ally. They should be treated as such. Sink the North Korean puppets if they lock FC again

Will Goode
@kwatt,
Thats the problem with radio, you can't tell if you've been heard or what was said.
Here we are, the poor Japanese on a JapanToday.com blog, all "on the same frequency", all understanding the same language, even though some expats are thousands of miles away, and you expect us to believe, all warships and planes have in this era is radio !
Hello Kitty 321
The problem is that Japan went to the media in the first place, surely this could have been settled quietly by bureaucrats in each country without Japan trying to whip up nationalistic fervor.
kwatt
@Will Goode
I should have said radio communication, not audio. It seems everyone wants to see and hear video and radio communication in the control room of the warship.
Hiro S Nobumasa
What's the purpose of Japanese planes flying low over ally South Korean ships?
Drop candles?
Will Goode
Yes I agree @kwatt
But my point and its hard on this clunker, rather than Fb, is that they used "sat" to call HQ, but not to call 971, in fact they circled four buzzing passes, with no attempt to make contact to the ship, it was not hostile, but it was rude.
If we send messenger we know when and by whom its been seen, maybe they need to improve comms protocol or that utube posted by @showchinmomo, could have been a serious flashpoint.
Joe Yan
Korea is clearly bluffing there. Trying to deflect from the original issue of target lock.
Japan should call their bluff and release data from black box on the patrol plane.
kwatt
@ Will Goode
Unless seeing the video that SK probably filmed the P-3 plane from the warship on its circling around and its low altitude, we still don't know exactly what happened there. It looks like S Korean military just accused Japan about such threatening at the point of their view. After we saw the video, then we can talk further.
zones2surf
First, Japan accuses South Korea of one of its ships locking onto a Japanese plane.
Now, South Korea accuses Japan of buzzing its warship.
Everyone is debating who is right or wrong.
I am no lover of South Korea's Japan-hating nationalism nor am I a lover of Abe's nationalist instincts.
What I DO know is that it seems clear that there are people on both sides that are using these situations for domestic political gain.
And it is clear that no one seems ready to dial this back.
And THAT is a recipe for disaster.
Whatever I think of the U.S. military and political leadership, I would like to think someone on the U.S. side is trying to knock some heads together and get these two parties to sort things out. Or else.
The only party all of this benefits is North Korea. Oh, and China.
Kazuaki Shimazaki
1st, this is a new event from the December 20 incident. And while I have reservations about the 60-70m part, I won't be surprised at all if the MSDF did tell an aircraft to get as close as its norms would allow to a ROK destroyer.
And before anyone calls this un-necessarily provocative, I'll point out this is similar to the American mentality behind FONOPS - don't use it, you lose it. The fact that someone is contesting your right to do something is all the more reason to assert your right - by doing it.
Will Goode
Maybe next time the P1 can get on its radio on the right frequency in clear Korenglish and say;" hey big buddy ten four you down there, this is Japan bear in the air, what's your handle mate"?
Rather than flying past four times to try and read the number plate (971).
Will Goode
You see how ridiculous it sounds in American, it's the language that holds the intent, left over from the war, have you got a Department in Japan, that adds new words and phrases.
Because in this conflict they waited too long to introduce themselves, then they said a strange vague phrase;" What is the purpose of your act ?"
No mention of radar !
smithinjapan
Speed: "South K is really no ally."
Japan doesn't deserve them, and I think SK has put up with the petulant demands and distortions of history by Japan for long enough. If Japan is flying this kind of low altitude flights over warships, and SK can prove it (though should have to if they make the accusation), then Japan should not complain if there is a radar lock-on -- which they have yet to prove.
Will Goode
Maybe tone down the Nationalistic Aggression on both sides with a little humour
"Captain Roger here, I spy with my little eye, a South Korean ship beginning with G, can you flash us with FC to see if its working ? "
That is what true allies would do !
alwaysspeakingwisdom
You what I find interesting?
First, A South Korean ship -ROKS Cheonan- was sunk by a North Korean sub, killing 46 South Koreans on March 26, 2010 and North Korea shelled South Korea in 2015. Yet, South Korea never demanded an apology.
In fact, Pres. Moon gave a big hug to the dear leader, but goes out of his way to give Japan the finger.
Second, there are reports that South Korea is not enforcing UN Sanctions against North Korea.
My theory is that Japan is looking for hard evidence that South Korea is violating sanctions and South Korea does not want to get caught. The P-1 saw something going down between South Korea and North Korea and that is why the South Korean ship locked its radar control on the plane.
AlexBecu
Stand-up Japan otherwise they will walk all over you.
Try another apology and compensation, it's what made things get this worse with S. Korea, your weak policy of apologies and compensation has brought us more hate and Anti-Japan sentiment than if you did literally Nothing!
Will Goode
@alwaysspeakingwisdom
demanded
I think you're confusing South Korea with Japan, very few countries these days would do that, its like saying "sorry", its given freely from the heart, you can't really " demand", for it to mean anything.
AgentX
Oh right... 'something' that happened a hundred years ago... And it was SOOOOO insignificant that it was only a blip on the radar. I'm not sure why they keep bangin' on about it down in Hiroshima, either. They should just forget about it all and move on, right?
showchinmono
"The threatening low-altitude flight conducted today, despite our firm request to the Japanese government to ensure that (such flights) don't recur, is a clear provocation against the naval vessel of a friendly country and makes it impossible for us not to question Japan's intentions,"
Buhaha calling yourself a friendly country? Really? By deleting North Korea as an main enemy from a new defense white paper, when are you inserting Japan as a hypothetical enemy?
Samit Basu
The Korean MoD is preparing a retaliation plan.
1.Every time a Japanese patrol aircraft buzzes or attempts to buzz a Korean warship, a Korean patrol aircraft will buzz a Japanese warship in the exact same manner. The Korean MoD officials specifically asked if Japanese didn't mind if a Korean patrol aircraft buzzed the Japanese warships in the same manner during their last meeting and Japanese replied they didn't, so the Koreans will buzz Japanese warships at 60 meter height.
2.Every time a Japanese patrol aircraft approaches a Korean warship, the ship's armed helicopter will take off and block the Japanese patrol aircraft's flight path to prevent it from approaching the Korean warship.
alwaysspeakingwisdom
Armed helicopter? The South Korean flies the AgustaWestland AW159 Wildcat. It does not carry an anti aircraft weapons. You would have to total idiot to put a helicopter against a jet.
Geeliez
I trust South Korea as much as I trust North Korea, China, and Russia.

I saw the proof of 4 photos on TV news S Korea officially released this evening. These 4 photos show absolutely "nothing as proof". I wanted to see the height/altitude P-3 plane flying at above sea water. Any photo does not show the height/altitude above the sea water. All photos show P-3 plane flying only, nothing else. These can't be proof/evidence. Anyone tell me if S Korea proved P-3 plane flying at 50-60m above sea water from these 4 photos?
showchinmono
Is this what S.K MoD warned it would take extremely strong measures? Shouldn't it be, will fire arms to shoot them down?
Forgot they claimed that the rule 150m height from the sea level is applicable only to civilian aircraft? In case that is military, it's all subjective isn't it?
Will Goode
@wallacefred
So used to our mobiles, no copper wires, ten digits and we can connect specifically with any person anywhere on the Planet, but its not like that at sea; either satellite phone, or nineteenth century radio, and here we are discussing literally "buzzing" to be able to read the white numbers painted on the side of a ship, its primitive and people are taking that as rudeness.
showchinmono
I myself am not sure at all if it is true or not by just looking at it..but Share News Japan picked that someone pointed out S.K MnD photoshopped 2000ft height (from sea level) to 200( )ft by erasing a zero.
**( ) = space by erasing a zero.
https://snjpn.net/archives/93016
Help me anyone to stop laughing. It's not true is it? Is it?
showchinmono
Just in case, this also shows both original and after photcollage in the middle ( Just forget can read Japanese or not) to compare

Those guys seem have done image analysis too by Fhotoforensics and pointed out that even P-3 itself in another photo was attached later by photocollage.

Japan needs to make clear to the Americans, they may not use their Japanese bases to support the southern faction of Korea. It is not our fight, it is not our war. The so called "Republic" of Korea is not a friend of the Japanese nation.
Samit Basu
@alwaysspeakingwisdom
With a helicopter in its flight path, the Japanese patrol aircraft must turn away to avoid a collision. It is a chicken game.
@zones2surf
Well, only Abe san does have political gains to make from these tensions, because he can use it to prop up his quest to strike down the Article 9.
Mr. Moon has nothing to gain from this, he is too busy on NK de-nuclearization issue and Trump-Kim summit and essentially outsourced the handling of current military tensions affair to his defense minister, who is formulating a hawkish "an eye for an eye plus more" response as one would expect from a former military general.
@Hiro S Nobumasa
Radar signature collection. Japanese MoD doesn't know what radar hit the P-1 on December 20th, and is trying to collect as much radar signature from Korean warships as possible by deliberately provoking Korean warships, 3 times since the original P-1 "lock-on" false claim started.
@Hallowed
Both side already do. Only you didn't know.
@extanker
What part of "warning shots" do you have a problem comprehending?
@YuriOtani
The US-Japan SOFA agreement says the US military can use its bases in Japan for whatever purposes it wants.
Heck, the US can launch a nuclear strike against China from Okinawa and there is nothing Japan can do to stop it.
extanker
That's because Japan knows what is and is not a serious incident. Locking on with fire control radar is serious. A ship flyby is definitely not.
Korea needs to stop screwing around and look at how the rest of the world's militaries behave. Warships are buzzed all the time. Korea is the only one that acts like it is a crisis.
Haha! 'Warning shots' at an allied nation will only lead to one thing. It still won't end well for Korea.
Samit Basu
@extanker
And Japan just gave a permission to Chinese and Russian patrol aircraft to buzz Japanese warships at a 60 meter altitude. The Japanese officials said so themselves.
If that actually happened, which it didn't.
Well, Korea and Japan aren't allies. Neither side ever considered the other an ally to begin with.
extanker
Russia has sent actual armed bombers with fighter escorts to the coast of Alaska probably hundreds of times. We haven't fired a shot. We act like adults and just shoo them away. And they are still doing it. It barely makes the news.
https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/american-jets-intercept-russian-aircraft-flying-west-alaska-n909161
Japan allegedly flew low near a Korean warship and you are thinking 'warning shots' are justified. Korea needs to attend some anger management classes.
Kazuaki Shimazaki
Ah, but they can't. The MND has already decided to put in writing:
http://www.mnd.go.kr/user/boardList.action?command=view&page=1&boardId=O_205290&boardSeq=O_205383&titleId=null&siteId=mndEN&id=mndEN_020500000000
and
As reference, the ROK Military‘s patrol aircraft maintains an altitude of 300m and a distance of 5500m to 9000m from the point of observation with the exception of special operations including the observation of suspicious ships. This distance is enough to identify ships using the detection equipment of the ROK Military.
The Japanese are not necessarily bound by this assessment, but in saying that, the ROK military will now have to live with this statement and any plane that busts the 300m/5500m bubble is demonstrating hostile intent and any plane that descends below 150m is being knowingly unsafe.
A very dumb, nonstrategic thing to say in an attempt to get a cheap, tactical advantage. But they've said it, even written it. LOL!
extanker
I believe they gave South Korea permission. I don't recall Russia or China asking. But one thing is for sure, Japan will know how to use it's radio when it happens...
That's your opinion. The actual facts still have not proved otherwise.
Wrong again. Both Japan and South Korea are considered 'allied nations' or the US wouldn't have bases in either.
KittyGeorge
Korea is already a member of Red Team because they consider Japanese plane which was patrolling sanction breaking.
tokyodoumo
japan has never been ally of korea period!
tokyodoumo
"Japanese Defense Minister Takeshi Iwaya denied the allegation (of flying 60-70m) saying the aircraft flew more than twice as high as South Korea claimed." so it's OK to fly at 140m, what a hogwash!
extanker
You guys don’t really understand what the phrase ‘allied nation’ means, do you...
SJ
I guess that the Abe administration consider their own citizens as a kind of toys to easily play with and manipulate. I foresee that toys will support the Abe regime en masse in the upcoming Japanese double elections, which are critical for further military push. They may have better manufacture and distribute P-3 toys with the rising sun flag at wholesale to the voters soon.

Out there, in the big wide world, instance's like this happen from time to time.
What usually happens is that, the two console's meet, along with senior military, and the incident discussed,examined and then measures are put place to avoid any further instances.
It is no use releasing videos to "show the world" who is at fault. Japan and SK need to sit down and work it out with cool heads, not by trading insults.
Samit Basu
@extanker
The US has two bilateral alliances, US-Japan and US-Korea alliances.
These two alliances act independently of each other.
However, Japan and Korea aren't allies, they will go to war tomorrow to settle historical and territorial disputes once and for all if the US left today.
extanker
You are so stuck on Japan and Korea getting along with each other, when that has nothing to do with it. I'm talking about the big picture.
In the current political world, if World War Three started, both South Korea and Japan would side with the US. They don't have to be friends to be on the same side. That is what an 'allied nation' is, and always has been.
kwatt
I think everyone wants to see the video, not unclear pictures. Anyway these 5 pictures does not prove anything that the P-3 plane flew at 50-60m altitude above sea level and the altitude (200 ft) meter picture seems fake. Everyone wants to see the clear whole view/picture showing the altitude/height that the P-3 plane was flying above sea level. S Korea has the video, but they don't want to release it. I just wonder why??
Triring
I hope people understand that a typical destroyer type warship stand around 20~30M above water line at the top of the mast. If a plane was to fly at 50~60M right above the ship it would look huge and the pilot would require acrobatic flying skills to perform such a feat.
Do anyone really believe this kind of nonsense?
kwatt
If I were there on the warship, I would take pictures/video of the plane that approached the closest to the ship. The photo would show really bigger plane and we might be able to see the pilot's face in the cockpit.
Carl N Jpn Gcjp
Stupid act by S Korea, and they know better.
these things happen sometimes (unfortunately), mostly at the tactical level and lower.
Both sides routinely patrol these areas and know each other are there.
