That is kinda the point: If Kim tries anything untoward, he'll be pummeled.

Sunday’s drill could draw a furious response from North Korea, which has long bristled at U.S. training exercises with South Korea, calling them an invasion rehearsal and responding with missile tests.

I'll look forward to the alert on my phone acting as my morning alarm later on this week.

I stead of picking a fight with wimpy North Korea, South Korea, Japan and the USA should be aiming these exercises at China (NOT Taiwan, Hong Kong, or Macao, but the CCP itself on Mainland China, aka West Taiwan). North Korea has been making threats for decades, and they never ever, do jack to live up to their threats. Meanwhile, while they (N. Korea) "distract" players in the Pacific (aka Ocean of West USA) , China is working on illegally claiming the whole region. Deal with the CCP, not the portly diabetic obtuse Rocket Man.

One would think The US govt warmongers would have enough on their plate.

-8 ( +5 / -13 )

DW, the German News has asked how many war fronts can the USA hold simultaneously? Currently there is the support to Ukraine and now, Israel in the Middle East. This could be the opportunity to China attempt to recover Taiwan? To North Korea's Rocket Kid to improve his madness?

-4 ( +4 / -8 )

Good to see three democratic, freedom-loving nations working together to show that they will never take a backward step to dangerous totalitarian regimes.

What are you gonna do, Little Rocket Man?

This could be the opportunity to China attempt to recover Taiwan?

See what happens if they try!

Expect a new NORK satellite launch attempt before the end of the month. Stay tuned for a J-Alert at the most inconvenient time.

I posted that we would be seeing this after Pres Yoon took office. Until then it was impossible to imagine.

It is happening everyday - 99.9 percent will never make it to the news.

What's N. Korea going to do? Bomb their own people?

3 ( +4 / -1 )

The poor old Sea of Japan is going to take a battering again because of this.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

@fighto

US isn’t a democracy. It’s a republic. Japan is run by old men that elect each other. Korea, not an authority on their politicians. Probably just as corrupt as Jp and US.

-11 ( +2 / -13 )

NK's Kim is a survivor....unlikely he'd sign his own death warrant by attacking anyone but his own people, military figures and journos ...oh and family

Like many counties with authoritarian "leaders ", Kim needs the spectre of a foreign threat to keep power and subjugation of his people//serfs.

How long this dance plays on is anyones guess.

Keeps the arms dealers and manufactures rich is the only benefit

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Pretty hardcore how the US flies 70-year old bombers right alongside 5th generation stealth fighters. If it still works, it works!

4 ( +5 / -1 )

@ Larry Lacky -

US isn’t a democracy. It’s a republic.

So the US, France, Germany, South Korea, India, Ireland etc are "not democracies"? Because they are Republics?

Bizarre take.

8 ( +11 / -3 )

I never mentioned the other countries, you did. That’s your take.

-9 ( +1 / -10 )

Doesn’t surprise me. Some of the things you post, yeah… bit strange

America is an oligarchy, not a democracy.

Well maybe it will get rid of the thousands of Chinese banned 'Tritium' fish.

They say the trilateral aerial exercises are in response to North Korea's missile launchings and potential nuclearization.

From North's perspectives, the joint military exercises by South with either Japan or the U.S. or both might appear a real threat.

So, we have a typical example of a chicken and the egg row here.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

When I was stationed in Yokosuka, we ran plenty of war games and drills. I think it's a good thing for Japan and Korea to join in together this time. Loosen the tension that the old men generate yearly.

Perhaps some of those of a military hardware persuasion can help. Are those jet engines the same as on the original B52s? If so, why have they never been replaced by something more modern (efficient, powerful, quieter)?

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

The original B-52 models (B-52A through B-52F) were equipped with Pratt & Whitney J57 turbojet engines. In the 1960s, these were replaced with more powerful Pratt & Whitney TF33 turbofan engines, which increased the aircraft's range and efficiency.

In the 2000s, an engine modernization program called the Commercial Engine Replacement Program (CERP) was initiated. This program replaced the aging TF33 engines with more modern and efficient CFM International CFM56 engines, which are also used on commercial airliners like the Boeing 737.

The engine upgrades significantly improved the B-52's fuel efficiency, range, and overall performance. This has allowed the B-52 to remain a vital part of the U.S. Air Force's bomber fleet, and it's expected to continue service for many more years to come.

The joint drill could be ending by the summer of 2025.

Yoon's polling crashed and the Democratic party, which currently enjoys a 20 point polling advantage over the ruling party is projected to break through the impeachment threshold of 200 seats. At which point the Democratic party pledges to launch a full scale special prosecutor investigation of Yoon and his wife by summer of 2024, impeach Yoon by fall, and then a presidential election to replace Yoon by spring of 2025. The next presumptive president of Korea, Lee Jae Myung, is the most hardcore anti-Japan politician to date.

Yoon is so desperate that he just pulled a Hail Mary pass, appointing an American named John Linton as the ruling party reform chairman to save the ruling party from being voted out of existence.

PPP appoints naturalized Korean doctor Yohan Ihn as party innovation committee chief

The ruling People Power Party on Monday approved Yohan Ihn, South Korea's first special naturalized citizen, as the chairman of the party's innovation committee tasked with regaining voters' trust after its crushing defeat in a by-election in Seoul.

The decision to appoint Ihn, also known by his American name John Linton, was approved in the People Power Party's leadership meeting earlier in the day.

"Ihn has the discerning eye and knowledge needed to resolve regionalism and attain national integration," said Rep. Kim Gi-hyeon, the People Power Party's leader. "As he deeply understands the need for political reform and has great determination, we expect Professor Ihn to provide us with the optimal diagnosis to reinvent the People Power Party into a party trusted by the people."

Crushing by-election defeat puts PPP in a pickle

October 12, 2023

Jin Kyo-hoon, the candidate for the liberal Democratic Party (DP), won the by-election to head Gangseo District Office on Wednesday, defeating the PPP candidate by a double-digit figure.

The PPP's chief said Thursday the conservative party would "cool-headedly analyze the reason for the election defeat and devise special measures" for a victory in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

@ Samit Basu - I have no reason to doubt your figures or assumptions.

Pres. Yoon is the best Korean President of all time, and has done more to improve Korea-Japan relations than any other Korean leader.

But sadly, due to the forces in the Korean media we all know Yoon will end up in prison before long - and the party of Japan-hating - the Democrats - will sadly be back.

Power cannot be a public matter, res publica without the people ruling, democratia. Just because a bunch of corrupt states apply the branding without the practice doesn't cheapen the clear meaning of the words.

Israel and Ukraine do not, as of yet, require any of our air or naval armaments.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

@ TaiwanIsNotChina - well said.

The DPRK, for example, is neither a republic nor a democracy. It is a totalitarian absolute monarchy.

The USA is a Republic AND a democracy.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

America is an oligarchy, not a democracy.

That’s just rhetoric. America has transparent elections - the very definition of a democracy. It’s got significant flaws no doubt, but is a democracy no doubt.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

I have no doubt that the "message" component of these exercises is directed at China no less than at North Korea.

Thanks for your kind assistance with my enquiry, Ossan.

Thanks for your kind assistance with my enquiry, Ossan.

There is a current program to re-engine the B-52 fleet once again. A major difficulty in doing so is there is surprisingly little room under the wings to hang larger turbofan engines. The fuel tanks on the ends of the wings hang very close to the ground.

If you ever have the opportunity to do so, watch a BUFF land and take off. Very weird airplane. Right before they lift off the wings bend upwards four meters (yes, that much) and the fuselage stays level as the aircraft climbs. They have to land dead flat too. In a crosswind the plane lands at an angle to the runway centerline. The crew dials in a crosswind correction to the landing gear so the wheels are pointed down the runway while the fuselage is at an angle to the runway centerline. It has to land dead flat or risk scraping the fuel tank and outboard engines on the runway ! The wings themselves are actually lower to the ground than the wings on a 747.
