Something needs to be done about Yamaguni Shrine for these talks to succeed.

rule-based international order,"

My understanding of history is the 'rule for international order' has mainly been the empire with the most powerful military and the most aggressive leader, supported by nations with similar beliefs, rules, for a current example see Russia. Russia is setting the rules for international order and Russia's maniacal leadership are threatening to use nukes to maintain order, Russian leaders do not seem to care one rat's if they destroy life in all forms, all they want is more territory to say "this is mine". They also want greater control over resources, especially fossil fuels. Russia's rules are not much different from the mindset of European 'royalty' or the US"s Monroe Doctrine. Rules of order similar to that of chimpanzees and bonobos, except chimps have the sense not to completely destroy life around them, chimps have enough survival skills to know they cannot kill off other plant and animal species they need to stay alive. The Russian leadership must have the fallout shelters in their palaces so well stocked they think they will be able to survive a global winter. Stop Russia and all other nuclear powered, territory grabbing empires today, leave sovereign states alone. Let sovereign states decide their own futures.

The incoming Yoon administration needs to reinstate and fully ratify the 2015 Comfort Women Agreement first. Everything else will follow if that is accomplished.

Japan: "So, have you done your homework yet?"

... deja vu for another 5 years.

No, remove the names of the 14 Class-A war criminals from Yasukuni Shrine first ! Everything else will follow if that is accomplished. In fact Japan will never be fully trusted unless this is accomplished first. The Japanese are frustratingly blind to how the honoring those war criminals undercuts everything else. Everything else.

I wish them a good luck for any improvements in mutual relationship. But I am not holding my breath.

Unlike some countries, Japan has freedom of religion. The government cannot tell a place of worship who they may and may not worship. A shrine is a trivial issue in light of current threats. Korea and Japan should be working together to support each other's democracies, and any step in this direction is positive.

Yep. That would make a good step and it is not difficult. All SK needs to do is exposing fraud scandals

of Chong Dae Hyup and Lee Yong soo/Kim Bok Don/Kim Haksun/Kil Wong-ok =Four heavenly queens

who have been fooling entire South Korea and the world.

As democracies, Japan & S. Korea are dependent on each other and defending one another unless they both don't mind switching over to the dark side.

How about we learn to face our past and acknowledge what we have done?

Once we acknowledge and teach in our history books about the brutality that comfort women had to endure, then the statues will naturally go.

Young people in Japan just want to move and be friends with each other. The older ones are planting this seed of hate but I am glad that a lot of the younger generation don't seem to care. Thanks to Kpop and K-Dramas... Because I do not live in Korea, I am not sure how young Koreans in the peninsula view Japan but I hope that they are not much influenced by negativity. Both countries need each other, so I hope they can work this out.

Yes, that’s exactly the point and problem here, @Seigi

The young people there are very much influenced by the elderly people and are influenced by them, by school books or the education in general and also government statements and even in special museums or exhibitions in a very anti-Japanese way. In general I would say both youths are split over all those history or nowadays’ issues, but I don’t know the exact percentage too. Some love and some hate Japan in Korea and some love and some hate Korea in Japan.

Not gonna happen, you're peeing into the wind. The US and other WWII Allied powers have no issue with it. And no, ROL did not exist until Aug 1948 and PRC did not exist until Oct 1949.

No can do. All the comfort women statues are privately installed, government cannot interfere.

No can do again. In Korea, it is comfort women themselves who are the final approvers of any deal and they already rejected the 2015 agreement, the deal is as good as dead,

Everything else will follow if that is accomplished.

That means nothing will be accomplished since it's beyond Yoon's abilities, the comfort women agreement and the forced laborer damages trials.

The US and other WWII Allied powers have no issue with it.

The US OFFICIALLY opposes Yasukuni shrine visits as long as A-class war criminals are enshrined there.

After all, it was Tojo Hideki who killed 3,000 US servicemen at Pearl Harbor, Tojo is basically same as Osama Bin Laden to the US and Japan pays honor to criminal terrorists under the US laws.

U.S. 'disappointed' in Japanese leader

The United States has joined China and South Korea in criticizing Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe for visiting a war shrine in Tokyo.

Korea absolutely doesn't need Japan for its defense.

It is Japan that relies on Korean radar feed for its missile warning, however.

Absolutely correct. Japan has faced it's past and resists militarism, has apologized to all of the victims of WWII.

In contrast, South Korea uses revisionist history to tell the world and teach it's youth that Korea was nmerely another "victim" of Imperial Japan. That is what allows anti-JP sentiment to remain and be used for political purposes. Yasukuni honors quite a few Korean Class B andC War Criminals. That's because over a quarter millon Koreans were serving in the Japanese military and invading other Asian countries. When will South Korea recognize it's true role in WWII?
