I don't care if she is eager for Taiwan's independence of mainland China's influence or not, but it's a grave concern to us for her to publicly advocate Japan's shifting of its military strategy by doubling its military budget to about 11 trillion yen ($81.5 trillion) and assuming a more offensive posture, even possessing preemptive strike capability, toward China, North Korea and Russia.

Taiwan stating the obvious. More opposition to China forcefully taking Taiwan against its wishes is a good thing for Taiwan.

Chinese leadership may consider Taiwan should be a part of China, but Taiwan and importantly many nations around the world do not.

The problem for China is it is not doing anything to tempt Taiwan citizens to want to be under CCP rule. They literally have nothing to offer that is better than what Taiwan currently has. The only option they have available is to invade and subjugate the population, many who have family in China, pitting family members against each other. They may eventually win out but the cost will be a massive sanctions regime against China, reducing its GDP and causing huge unemployment as the world gets used to doing business without China. Not all nations will sanction but more than enough will, to permanently damage China's economy and it's standing in the world.

The danger to China of forcing unification is the very future of Chinese prosperity and allowing more subversive people into China who are against communist rule and support democracy. Generations of Taiwanese know nothing other than democracy and speaking their mind.

Taiwan deserves to make it's own way, and to choose for itself. China has no right to force them to kneel and drag them into subjugation against their will. The civil war ended seventy three years ago leaving the status quo as it is now. China wants to turn back the clock and return to a long ago war that it was not able to win completely then, so it can take more territory and rule over those who managed to get away and set up a new life for themselves.

Xi is as horrible and evil as Putin is.

This is the Republic of China (Taiwan) that Imperial Japan invaded in 1937 and fought until 1945 that is cheering on Japan's shift in it's defense policy.

But the PRC (China) which did not even exist until 4 years after WWII ended, and South Korea which as part of the Japanese Empire 1910-1945 and invaded other Asian countries, have an issue with it.

Japan is a democratic nation allied with the "West" against dictatorships. Of course democratic Taiwan supports Japan.

LOL. The truth somehow doesn't matter to some of our esteemed serial commentators. Communist led soldiers were a component of the National Revolutionary Army of the 1920s led by the Kuomintang (國民黨). This faction split off after the leftist purge started by Chiang in 1927 which led to the formation of the People's Liberation Army. Chiang was kidnapped by his own general in the Xi'an Incident of 1936 and was forced to once again work with the Communist to form a united front to oppose the invasion of the Imperial Japanese Army.

It certainly is ironic that the Republic of China government now seated in Taiwan applauds Japan's militarization.

The ROC has always been an ally of the United States. The CCP sent 250,000 troops into Korean Penninsula to support Kim Il Sung and kill US and UN troops from 21 nations.

It may well be China that "drags Japan into a war" if it hits bases in Japan with US troops on them.

Japan has avoided all conflicts the US has been involved in since WWII ended, they certainly decide if or when they go to war and the US do not decide for them. If they did Japan would have been involved in more than one conflict over the past decades.

It is in Japans interests for Taiwan to remain free and independent as it is between Japan and China. A buffer of sorts. Lose that buffer then China will be much closer and more belligerent towards Japan as it aims for the Senkaku Islands and Okinawa next.

Nobody wants a war with the exception of China, who refuses to rule out force to make Taiwan part of China. They are building for it and planing for it, and it is the only way Taiwan would become part of China while the CCP rule.

So many pro-China posters say Taiwan will be a part of China soon, so they all know war is the only way it can happen.

Naturally the more nations willing to defend Taiwan, the better Taiwan likes it.

I don't understand why Tsai is welcoming Japan's rearmament, Japan has no intention of intervention or providing military aid to Taiwan; Japan's only trying to stop the fire of war from spreading onto Japan.

Despite Tough Words, Japan Might Not Enter a Taiwan War

Japan troops won’t get involved if China invades Taiwan, PM Yoshihide Suga says

@OssanJapan

The CCP sent 250,000 troops into Korean Penninsula to support Kim Il Sung and kill US and UN troops from 21 nations.

Actually it was 1.2 million of which 500K were either killed or went missing.

Nobody, not even Japan's current leader knows for sure how Japan will react. So your opinion is just your opinion. Much will depend on what China does if the US intervenes. If Japanese territory is attacked, or if the Senkaku's are occupied during a Taiwan conflict. Nothing is off the table, but Japan must make itself ready for any eventuality.

@Peter14

Of course Japan's leaders know exactly how Japan would react.

1) Japan declares neutrality.

2) Japan forbids the USFJ from launching a military intervention from Okinawa. US forces are allowed to transit(ie fly to Taiwan), but must not return to Japan during the duration of war.

I know it sounds shocking that Japan would forbid the US from launching a military intervention from Okinawa, but Japan becomes the enemy combatant and Tokyo becomes a legal target of Chinese ballistic missiles if it allowed the US to launch intervention from Okinawa.

This is the reason why Ukraine's bordering neighbors Poland and Slovakia opposed supplying fighter jets to Ukraine from their countries, because that would make them direct combatants.

This is why Taiwan is indefensible, since USFJ are out of equation and the only available military assets are US CBG jets, bombers flying from Guam, and nuclear attack submarines.

Well some leaders say they should defend Taiwan.

Anything can happen, and simply ruling it out at this point is irrelevant.
