Hardly a precedent.... Vietnam, Grenada, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Libya....

-7 ( +30 / -37 )

@Mr. Kipling. Exactly none of those wars resulted in shameless land grabs so, yeah, Russia still setting the precedent for incivility.

19 ( +39 / -20 )

"demand"?.... now why didn't they think of that before, I'm sure it will bring an end to hostilities within days.....

-7 ( +14 / -21 )

Nonbinding mean waste of time, almost 1 billion dollars a day has been spent on this war

-16 ( +13 / -29 )

The international community will keep up the pressure on fascist Russia to withdraw from independent Ukraine. Keep up the sanctions, the banning of Russia and Belarus from world sporting and cultural events, keep supporting free Ukraine. Keep aiming to make life as hard for Russian people as possible - keep them excluded from the civilized world.

Allowing bully nations to invade and claim parts of sovereign nations simply as a land grab sets a horrible precedent for the world.

Nobody takes Japan serious, outside of Japan

Much of the world outside Japan takes Japan seriously.

13 ( +34 / -21 )

The top Japanese diplomat also said other nations should "refrain from supporting the aggression either directly or indirectly," But, Japan will keep its Sakhalin 2 project, thank you very much!

23 ( +25 / -2 )

Spending 1 billion dollars a day,and Russia had not budge one inch out of Ukraine, the longer it goes nukes will be introduced into the conflict

-15 ( +11 / -26 )

@MrUkip Vietnam, Grenada, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Libya.

In other words, mistakes were made and atrocities committed in the past, so it's acceptable to keep doing them when non-western nations make them. Russia/China Iran, North Korea stop your war in Ukraine, admit you made a mistake, and say you have learned that butchering civilians, and restricting your own citizen's rights is not the best way to rule your own nations and certainly not the best way to rule the world. But given the new imperium's lack of credibility the rest of the world will struggle to trust you, you've each lied so many times, and so have your media, including your social media warriors

2 ( +14 / -12 )

Quite right, allowing this will let the genie out of the bottle. Land grabs will multiply as greedy autocrats seek to expand their power. No small or medium sized country will be safe. The only protection will be to be nuclear armed, a sure and certain recipe for annihilation.

The only certain way to ensure this doesn’t happen is for russia to be comprehensively defeated in Ukraine by providing them with all the advanced weapons the civilised world can supply.

14 ( +24 / -10 )

What do you fantacists really believe? If Russia gave up its newly reintegrated territories, what do you think would happen? They speak Russian, have Russian passports, celebrate Russian culture and 98% voted to become part of Russia. If Ukraine got them back, there would be mass genocide. Military repression has been going on since the US-backed coup in 2014, but it would far worse because revenge would be the main driver. Don’t forget what the Nazi Ukrainians did in WW2.

-19 ( +13 / -32 )

Exactly none of those wars resulted in shameless land grabs

You don't need to grab the land if you simply control the government and monopolize the country's wealth, i.e. Iraq.

-2 ( +14 / -16 )

Precedent?

Didn't Israel did it first?

12 ( +21 / -9 )

“ Hayashi tells U.N. 'terrible precedent' should not be set over Ukraine war “

[ "Imagine yourself. What if one permanent member of the Security Council would launch an aggression against your homeland, grab your territory, and then cease hostilities, calling for peace. I would call it an unjust peace," Hayashi told a U.N. General Assembly emergency session on the Ukraine war.

"It would be a victory for the aggressor if such actions were tolerated. It would set a terrible precedent for the rest of the planet," Hayashi said at the U.N. headquarters in New York, a day before the first anniversary of Russia's invasion. ]

Taiwan, are you listening to this(?); Japan has your back(!)

The United Nations may call Russia a pariah state which must withdraw from Ukraine and Crimea. But the total voices of all nations will come to nothing.

Only Nature can remove Putin and, it is about time. When its time is up, a fruit must ripen and, must fall with its own weight. Putin has been in power for over twenty five years. So, his time is almost up. Let us hope and pray that he will soon fall like a ripening fruit.

Russia have liberated parts of Ukraine historically part of the USSR that wanted to be part of the Russian Federation through a duly conducted plebiscite. Russia showed willingness for a negotiation but the warmongers of the West has blocked it. They would rather supply Ukraine with more money that is remitted back to them and more military supplies including tanks and jets that has pushed Russia to annul its nuclear treaty. Now, the Russian fleet is armed with nuclear weapons for the first time in 30 years.

-3 ( +15 / -18 )

@yrral Nobody takes

Going from speaking for all Americans to now speaking for everyone?

3 ( +12 / -9 )

Russia showed willingness for a negotiation but the warmongers of the West has blocked it.

Russia is the only country that started the war, and is the only county that can choose to end it immediately. There is only one Warmonger here, and that is Russia.

This is why Russia must be quarantined from humanity for a few generations.

I guess the Israel land grab of Palestine is ok then

No, it's not.

Haha yeah

-3 ( +5 / -8 )

Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi on Thursday called for global efforts to make Russia withdraw from Ukraine, saying a "terrible precedent" should not be set after nearly a year of war in the country.

"Imagine yourself.

It would set a terrible precedent for the rest of the planet,"

Finally, the reality, harsh and needs to be addressed with a response.

Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi statement, in many respects echoes an era when the world trembled when faced with a force that would be willing to fight to the very last man existed, rightly or wrongly.

Soon such a force could be called upon, needed again.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

these world leaders would gather and argue on for decades....and nothing will happen. we act like this is NOT THE NORM.

(and this Japan Today will delete this post)

4 ( +7 / -3 )

Shame on Russia. They make North Korea look like Mother Theresa

3 ( +16 / -13 )

The is doing what it do ,without the UN only Ukraine need them what they can do for themselves, usually nothing

-14 ( +2 / -16 )

Is it up to 98% now? Why not, the previous count was fantasy too.

Seriously though, life would go on. If these are conditions to determine what country you belong to, some US states would already be (or soon be) Mexico.

5 ( +9 / -4 )

Putin's destruction is pure evil and hatred.

2 ( +14 / -12 )

If you really are concerned then you would restore all those territories as well, because in essence people there were coerced/killed there as well.

So your logic is that if all issues cannot be taken care of at the same time, no one cares about any issue.

Because that's "logic" that smart people are stating somewhere I would assume. Where is it exactly that smart people are stating this though?

Ukraine will never join NATO, Ukraine will never be a part of the EU while Russian occupy ,,Crimea, Ukrainain have bleak future ahead of them

Israel is in the headlines again.

Where's the international condemnation, the sanctions?

Where's the support for Palestinians?

13 ( +18 / -5 )

Where's the international condemnation, the sanctions?

I regularly see people around the world condemning the Israelis. You are doing it right now even.

Where's the support for Palestinians?

I regularly see support for Palestine. You are doing it right now even.

-3 ( +12 / -15 )

Ukraine membership of either NATO or the EU was never an option.

Politically, economically or diplomatically.

Putting it bluntly, Germany and France would aggressively block such a path and have stated so.

1 ( +9 / -8 )

"It would be a victory for the aggressor if such actions were tolerated. It would set a terrible precedent for the rest of the planet,"

Precedent has long been set, but as the quote goes, tolerated.

Encouraged even

Much of the world outside Japan takes Japan seriously.

I think that the problem is : Japan is constantly urging the international community to do this and that, but does very little itself.

10 ( +13 / -3 )

Pathetic

Well, it's not an easy situation. I don't know that I'd call it pathetic per se.

2 ( +8 / -6 )

I think that the problem is : Japan is constantly urging the international community to do this and that, but does very little itself.

Japan is, if I recall correctly, the second largest donator of foreign aid in the world after America.

So yeah, back in reality, they actually do quite a bit.

9 ( +16 / -7 )

I totally support the U.N. resolution and this unjust war should be stopped, way to many innocent civilians are dying because of a foolish attempt to revive the old derelict called Soviet Union by Putin.

Saying that like back with the League Of Nations who wasn’t able to stop Nazism and Japanese to start a world conflict now in 2023 we can see how this United Nation is basically just and empty shell with no real powers rather than admonish rouge countries.

I think the world need an evolution of this League Of Nations/United Nations with effective powers to really make it’s decisions effective, otherwise it will be all fluff and the Ukrainian people will keep dying as the victims of WWII.

2 ( +8 / -6 )

Moon, since the war, will not impact your life personally, those who it will should seek an objective opinion

-16 ( +0 / -16 )

It's not an easy situation lol

-9 ( +2 / -11 )

The UN finally reared its head and said something... a non-binding, unenforceable resolution.

Not really much use is it?

4 ( +7 / -3 )

Japan is still under US military occupation and she is talking Russia withdraw from Ukraine, is that hilarious ?

-4 ( +10 / -14 )

Chris, they have not stabilize the Yen in 30 years, Mexico has more influence on US matters than Japan

-10 ( +4 / -14 )

What if one permanent member of the Security Council would launch an aggression against your homeland, grab your territory, and then cease hostilities, calling for peace. I would call it an unjust peace

Now, who is the war monger here! Japan is making global statements that they oppose peace! And who said unjust peace? The peace term would have to be fair from sides (Russia would have to return all territories, and US would not be allowed to plant US controlled nukes is Ukraine.)

0 ( +7 / -7 )

It seems that Mr. Hayashi lost his memory about the second world war. Japan's invasion of China wasn't a precedent?

1 ( +10 / -9 )

When has the US invaded a country with the intention of making it part of the US? Any time in the past 100 years?

When has the US invaded a country with the intention of making it part of the US? Any time in the past 100 years?

Come on mate. You know the US doesn't need to make a country officially a state or a possession for it to be "part of the US". US foreign policy over the past 100 years has been "you are with us or against us" - if against us your government will be overthrown and occupied until you are a reliable proxy.

3 ( +8 / -5 )

@Max Sped

Japan can ask us to leave. UK is their problem. Guam and Hawaii were over 100 years ago. Alaska was bought legitimately. Guantanimo is sort of relevant so I guess you aren't 0/100. Russia is setting the standard for savagery this very year, though.

4 ( +9 / -5 )

This is how modern states have been built... For example the "democratic" good old US, lol..

I guess this clears up that Russia isn't a modern state yet.

Obviously the poster is referring to government level condemnation / sanctions.

Was actually wondering if there's someone else here so dumb as to have misunderstood those obvious statements so badly.

Russia has every rights to get back lost lands of the Soviet Union. The dissolve of USSR was illegal and illegitimate to collaboration with NATO. Ukraine was the founding member of USSR, the Soviet law forbidden this!

-9 ( +0 / -9 )

@Strangerland

How would u feel if your enemies are setting up missile silos and bases right next to your border? If your tradition is threatened by the woke culture of the West? If you see the Russian people who speak Russian in Ukraine who want to break away from Ukraine to join Russia that they consider their mother land? Russia went into Ukraine to protect their freedom and security and liberate Donbas.

Article 9 of their constitution does not allow them to do the kind of things othr nations do. So they don't have an option but to urge.

I guess the Israel land grab of Palestine is ok then

There is no land grab by Israel.

Israel was given land in Palestine to establish a country, and Palestinian Arabs were also given land there---but they refused it because they wanted it all.

So, we now have a country of Israel, legally established, and a group of Arabs who have been kicked out of various other Arab-nations.

The reality regarding aid to Ukraine is, Japan ranks tenth, behind the US, EU, UK, Germany, Canada, Poland, France, Netherlands, and Norway.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

You're right, they aren't same. Putin didn't fabricate his cause with a bag of laundry powder, which will forever be the laugh stock in the history
