I wonder if the fact that Japan hasn't suffered attacks like the 9/11 ones could be anything to do with Japanese forces not having fought overseas since 1945.

No doubt about it. Some Americans still seem to think that 9-11 came out of nowhere. As long as they continue to refuse to look at how their own actions could lead do hatred against their country, that hatred will continue. Building walls can't keep the terrorists out, and eventually one will slip through. Better to deal with the root issue of the problem rather than continuing in a blind faith in American infallibility.

I wonder how many of these people would still be calling for this if Japan was attacked on the scale of 9/11, with planes crashing into Roppongi Hills and Yokohama Landmark Tower, killing thousands...

They'd realized what the Americans realized after 9/11. Inside job ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

"Thousands of protesters gathered in downtown Tokyo on Sunday to call for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to resign and for a law allowing the military to fight overseas to be overturned"

Bullfighter: The evidence is the poll in the newspaper that showed 56% of people saw no problem with Abe breaking his promise to increase the consumption tax. That means those people do not mind that Abe lied through his teeth time and time again when he laid out his conditions for postponing a tax rise.

Other evidence is the re-election of politicians who have been convicted of crimes, who are dishonest and who are corrupt. The re-election of these crooks by the Japanese people demonstrates their acceptance of liars and thieves as suitable people to run the country. Such acceptance dooms Japan to economic catastrophe in the future and the blame lies entirely with the Japanese people.

I did not make any comparisons with politicians elsewhere. Such comparisons are irrelevant here.

On the other hand Abe's cabinet approval rating is 55.3% on Kyodo News, which is of course not reported on JapanToday. If you guys keep seeing only what you want to see, you won't get it.

Big deal. The LDP won't get a 55.3% share of the vote in the next election. I think the polls indicate the party's support is 40%, admittedly up from 37% but not quite 55.3%. We certainly won't "get it" if we can only see what other people want us to see. Unfortunately, barring some major screw-up on the part of the government or the opposition really getting their act together, I suspect that the upcoming election results will just about reflect what these opinion polls are saying and things will stay more or less the same.

t's clear that people here don't mind being lied to and deceived by their crooked politicians.

What evidence do you have that Japanese politicians lie more than politicians than politicians in other countries? What evidence do you have that the Japanese people are more accepting of lies by their politicians than people in other countries?

Unless you have solid evidence for your claim, your assertion is nothing but an expression of ethnic prejudice against the Japanese people.

Do you know of any postwar Japanese politician who has told a lie on the scale of George Bush and his "weapons of mass destruction" in Iraq and then used that lie as the basis for invading another country?

Do you know of any postwar Japanese politician who spews BS on a daily basis the way Donald Trump does?

If you don't, keep your prejudice to yourself.

Why are the right wingers there? To try and stir up more tension?

Prob to give the demonstrators a dose of reality.

Right-wingers in Japan have been known to do a bit more than that.

The constitution is outdated. The security alliance is lopsided. Japan needs to man up, not man down. And most of all . . . they need to stop hiding behind the US flag.

If Abe and the LDP couldn't hide behind the US flag I bet we wouldn't be hearing any nationalist sabre-rattling rhetoric from them. There would be no Yasukuni visits and they'd probably all join the Communist Party. As long as they felt the Chinese could make it worth their while, of course.

the so-called unequal agreement where Japan is not allowed by their constitution to come to the aid of America if war should break out elsewhere.

But it is unequal. Why should the US come to aid of the Sekakus, which are administered by Japan?

But it does make things more difficult for Japan now.

What's making things difficult are the US bases in Okinawa and the recent crimes committed by both US servicemen and women. The SDF should be doing everything. Not the US.

According to a survey in the paper this morning the majority of people support Dishonest Abe's postponement of the consumption tax increase and the majority also see no problem in Abe breaking his promise to raise it.

It's clear that people here don't mind being lied to and deceived by their crooked politicians. I expect Abe will win a majority of the seats in the election, but I hope he doesn't get 2/3 of the upper house or we will end up with the same freedoms as they have in China and North Korea.

I read this news with mixed feelings. While I am happy that many Japanese still believe that Japan should not be involved with other people's war oversea, I also understand that the situation is changing for Japan. As long as Japan does not intend to strengthen its military might further for fear of being accused of militarization, she will need to rely on the presence of the American troops to provide security and stability for Japan and the surrounding region. But now in America the voices are growing louder and louder (especially people like Trump) for Japan to do more and to ratify the so-called unequal agreement where Japan is not allowed by their constitution to come to the aid of America if war should break out elsewhere. In fact, Trump even suggested that Japan should protect herself by going nuclear.

Is Amercia's demands wrong? I'm not sure, since people like Trump are merely speaking from Amercia's perspective. But it does make things more difficult for Japan now.

In Japan, left, tight, center, educated, or uneducated, male, or female, they hate war, probably almost all Japanese families have memorial hi no mar flag wrapped with a relative's name. Young man who died in war. Probably many gov't officials, too. Have you watched American movie, Letter of Ioujima, the Lt. Gen of that movie Amar his grand or great grand son was Minister of some ministry in Japan. There were many disabled veterans gov't just sent back to their home. What kind of groups helped themto rehabilitate them, etch is not related in this article so I am not going to write, but just we hate to militarization. So, when they sense Abe is planning to change constitution, everybody, including yakuza's and temkyas join anti Abe demonstration in Japan.

Roll up your sleeves and provide your own security, national defense. Step 1, revise the constitution.

I do hope he loses BIG in the upcoming elections.

Some right-wing activists tried to approach participants but were held back by police.

Why are the right wingers there? To try and stir up more tension? Also, did the Abe regime have anything to do with that?
