Tokyo gubernatorial election likely to be on July 5, 2020

The Tokyo gubernatorial election is likely to be held on July 5, just ahead of the Tokyo Olympics.

According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Election Administration Commission, the election must take place within 30 days after the expiration of the incumbent governor’s term. Current Gov Yuriko Koike’s term of office comes to an end on July 30 next year.

However, as the Tokyo Olympic Games begin on July 24, there was some concern that gymnasiums to be used as polling stations and enough staff would be difficult to gather for each municipality, Fuji TV reported. Sources say campaigning is likely to begin on June 18 and polling will take place on Sunday July 5.

The Election Administration Commission is set to make an official decision during a meeting next Wednesday.

Koike has indicated her desire to run for re-election, while the Federation of Tokyo Metropolitan Liberal Democratic Party branches is also deciding on a candidate to support.

While we're piling on the trivia, I might as well add that Cleo's word gubernator came from Greek kybernan, a verb with the same meaning. On a completely different path, this Greek word led to the English word cybernetic. So cybernetic and governor have the same root. Isn't language crazy?

relating to a governor, particularly that of a state in the US.

"a gubernatorial election"

It's from the Latin, gubernator, meaning a helmsman, steersman, ship's captain; one who leads or governs, hence 'governor'.

The US uses words like this as a tribute to its 1000-year history and links with the Roman Empire.

So if both cybernetics and governor come from similar-meaning root words...

Does that mean that Arnold Schwarzenegger was a gubernator kybernan? (Cybernetic governor?)

but cybernetics originates from a Greek word meaning:  ‘steersman’, so a logical connection to governor.... and cybernetics is the science of communications and automatic control systems in both machines and living things.... it all ties up.....

The Governor of a Japanese prefecture is the equivalent of a US State Governor.

Anything and everything pertaining to a Governor is "gubernatorial".

Why refer to it as a 'gubernatorial' election - not all of your readers understand the term since we're not all Americans... I had to Google it for example:

Koike has indicated her desire to run for re-election ? What are her performance basis ?

So sab to say that everyone can run for offices, even people without elementary educations.
