If you look at a map of the South China Seas, Taiwan, Ryukyu Islands, Taiwan and Japan, you'll see why Okinawa is important. Okinawa hosts the closest U.S. military bases. In the event of a military crisis in the South China Seas region, U.S. and allied forces based in Okinawa can reach that region quicker than from bases in Japan or Guam.

It does seem contradictory, but if the Japanese people what to increase and strengthen their military I think they can change their constitution. They are a recognized free and sovereign country and the era of militant territorial expansionism seems to be far behind.

That potential alliance has the numbers, but India, Japan and Australia need to do more in terms of defence spending, particularly the latter two. India is probably doing all it can for a developing country. There needs to be top level collaboration on defence research as well, because China is pouring huge resources into this area. Economically, all need to pull back on Chinese imports dramatically and replace as much as possible with imports from ASEAN, Europe, South America etc etc.

More accurately, Japan is a client state of the US.

I believe that the US would act in defence of any western Pacific nation only if US interests were directly threatened. If US interests and facilities weren't at risk in a conflict between Japan and any other nation, then Japan would be left to its own devices. Most of the multilateral and bilateral military treaties the US have only compel the US to "consult" if its treaty partner is threatened -- i.e. the US is only compelled to "think about" helping defend its ally, not to actually do anything to assist.

Won't matter if it's NK -- regardless of whom they attack; IF they attack, they are done. So it'll be all or nothing. With China, I think we would see the US back down VERY quickly on this rhetoric if it is merely China taking over an uninhabited island or venturing into Japanese territory to claim something. Japan would quickly say it's an attack, and the US, worried about how it would threaten trade, would argue it is not. If China went full out attack and war, as with NK, it would be all or nothing.

Dukeleto - how were the crosshairs placed? They have been there the whole time. Except hostile countries against Japan will think twice before attacking since it will give us a reason to rain freedom on those countries and free their souls from their bodies :)
