@oldman_13:

What difference does it make if one is transgender, gay, or whatever? “

If it didn’t matter, then it should not havebbeen part of his/her platform. By announcing it, it becomes relevant.

"Transgender professor fails to win mayoral erection"

Sound not matter what his gender is, should be based on his policies. Worlds gone nuts.

Akie:

Well, from that point of view ethnicity and nationality are also irrelevant. They can still be labelled as such, though.

This is remarkable because it’s new. As we get used to any situation it becomes less newsworthy.

What difference does it make if one is transgender, gay, or whatever? Not sure the relevance to anything and why people feel a need to broadcast it so publicly.

Maybe someday that will be the case. But, until all people are treated fairly and equally, there will be occasions where it might be necessary to point out someone's gender/race/nationality/etc in a news article.

Why is the fact that he is trans relevant to his candidacy? He didn't campaign on trans issues.

She.

Interesting that the voters where not receptive to protecting children for the most part.

Ithink you can be interested in protecting children workout voting for a candidate who is focused on that topic.

In my country, Britain males are mayors and females mayoress. I don't know what it is in Japan.

I'mI'mnot sure that is the case. According to Wiki:

The designated female consort of a mayor is called the mayoress and accompanies the mayor to civic functions. A female mayor is also called mayor, not, as sometime erroneously called, "Lady Mayoress".

Interesting that the voters where not receptive to protecting children for the most part. Seem they where more worried about their own skin and getting more social security. Just interesting though not uncommon depending on the age of the population.

Same thing with governor, because governess is a different occupation altogether.

I wonder how he would have faired if he didn’t plug his transgender gender.

Now we need such a detailed news for all the local elections that didn't include transgender candidate.

Otherwise it will be unequal !

I think fair point. We first ask for them to be treated equally and then we put them up in whatever news they can fit. They lost because they lost. You win some you lose some. I can understand had they lost from a disadvantage arising out of their identified sex. But nothing of that sort suggested here.

I want my mayor flouncing around in stiletto heels and the party frock of his choice.

Also my guess is he "identified as female" before "sometime in 2013"......

People here assume a lot about this person based on their identity and also take the opportunity to comment on the discourse from trans issues that has nothing to do with the article or even the campaign. There is no "nonsense" mentioned. People with their critiques should have the integrity to recognize where their critiques are irrelevant.

Depends, zichi. What Thatcher, May, Jacinda Ardern, etc all Prime Ministeresses?

Didn't think so. The condescension isn't something I'd expect from you.

I identify as a super rich rock star can I use a different bathroom?

Burning BushToday  05:44 pm JST

I identify as a 10 year-old, can I get a discount when I go into Disneyland.

And don't even think of judging me by the body I was born with, I'm 10 years old and that's final.

Fortunately scientific consensus does not support your hateful attempts to demean other human beings.

Sad that so many posters here have nothing better to do with their time than attack whole classes of people who have done nothing wrong.

I think highlighting the LGBTK thing is good for society so perhaps the professor has already accomplished a lot.
