What a loaded statement!!!! Lol! The things I am tempted to say!
Well, I'll just say this, business as usual for these two!
Ah_so
No substance at all.
PTownsend
Personal ties? The ties his company has made in China? Personal ties helping campaign and Trump legal fund donors like Sheldon Adelson'?
Serrano
Officials, however, say there is no way to prepare for Trump tweeting or speaking of details not intended for disclosure.
That's a foregone conclusion, hehe.

Well when dealing with a dude like Trump, being chummy on a personal level is probably extremely important. He doesn’t strike me as the most mature, or the leadership type lol.
lincolnman
No substance? You forgot to include no intelligence, no dignity, no integrity, no truth, no facts...
Just a lot of "I'm a stable genius" - who forgot where his father was born...
I wonder if he tell Abe; "Why are you picking on my friend Vlad - you really don't need those Northern Isles, do you?"
Prepare for another major embarrassment in front of the whole world...

Personal ties and no substance? Great way to waste tax payer's money. Par for the course for these two. What a let down for the families of the abducted.

Well then.....Enjoy my tax funded dinners Joy Boys.

Anyone who understands business, or politics (to a perhaps lesser degree) would understand the importance that relationships can have. All work and no play would make Mr Abe and Mr Trump dull boys. Looking forward to seeing them both a sumo... one wonders who will win the basho this time around...
Toasted Heretic
I hope he gets a milkshake.
Cricky
Abe sans milkshake brings all the boys to the yard.

Abe's face and Trump's butt- til death do us part.
For a nationalist, Abe sure is a polished butt kisser
Akie
For Abe, the purpose of the summit also is "showing that nobody works better with this president or the United States than Japan," said Michael Green.
Nobody ? What an arbitrary reckless statement !
Akie
Unlike Abe, Trump isn't somebody to waste a summit for a personal relationship.
u_s__reamer
Trump and substance? Only works as an oxymoron!
PTownsend
Tip of the hat for admitting Trump's a runaway gun.
BlackFlagCitizen
With Trump and Abe, substance is not the word most would associate them with anyway
David Varnes
Can't speak for Abe's work ethic, but Trump spends less time 'working' than any President. Ever. For a man who claimed he'd be too busy to go golfing, he spends millions of taxpayer dollars on golf outings to his own resorts, in addition to his West Wing 'Executive Time' that would get any regular worked sacked within a month.
For Donnie Loses Billions, it's all play & rant and no work.
gokai_wo_maneku
Nobody expects Trump to be able to deal with anything of substance. Why is this news?
Laguna
Trump never does anything except personal reasons.
thepersoniamnow
Not a trump fan at all. But its quite funny seeing peeps all over the world assuming he’s some total moron.
He’s laughed his way all the way to the presidency at our expense. To assume he’s a total dimwit is probably quite foolish, as he is not and he is now so powerful he can do a lot of damage if he wanted to.
Serrano

You must have missed this year's State of the Union Address.
Prepare for another major embarrassment in front of the whole world...
Prepare to be bitterly disappointed.
Bintaro
At this point, I'm almost expecting Abe to serve as Trump's chair at the Sumo tournament.
He may as well get on all four literally as well as figuratively.
cleo
No one's assuming anything: just reaching a conclusion based on the evidence.
Not can. He is doing a lot of damage.
lincolnman
Nah, we saw it - it was on the Comedy Channel....
I'm prepared to be majorly embarrassed and bitterly disappointed...as I am with everything Trump does....
hachikoreloaded
If the substance you're looking for is a Big Mac then the orange headed Oni has you covered.
rlperez@hotmail.com.au
There are no personal ties; Japan is still under US occupation and Abe still reports to Washington. This will continue until the Japanese people demand otherwise from their government. Regain your sovereignty and self respect!
Serrano
I'm prepared to be majorly embarrassed and bitterly disappointed...as I am with everything Trump does....
Bitterly disappointed with no new wars, a booming economy and record unemployment, are we? Jeez...
Attilathehungry
I'm amazed that grapes can still taste so sour for some people...
Abe is showing some political skillz in dealing with Trump this way. It's smart and it works.
As for Pres. Trump, it says something that he could rise from TV reality star to President in less than two years. Give the man some credit. He's no dummy, he's a consummate communicator and isn't afraid to play a bit rough sometimes. You don't survive 40 years in real estate in New York City without learning a thing or two.
lincolnman
Well, helps a lot when you have Vladimir Putin on your side. It also says a lot about the people that voted for him...
Just ask Vlad...
Just ask Stormy...
From the Gambino Crime Family...
voiceofokinawa
Funny, I'm looking forward to Trump's visit to Japan, especially to the Kokugikan Sumo Arena in Ryogoku, Tokyo. Certainly, it would be a big, entertaining show you've never seen before.

Trump won? Won what? The ridicule of every thinking person on the planet?
Simon Foston
Sounds like a total waste of time and money, then.

Trump: Look at this! Isn't this a great pet? This is the greatest pet in the world.
Abe: Arf! Arf!

The substance is in the personal ties... (read between the lines)
This article as with much of the so called news reported by Associated Press and the world media already starts with an "opinion". From the title of the article to a simple phrase such as "it appears" or "it seems" or even "it relates to" included in any report already expresses an opinion and a bias of the reporter, editor or whomever involved in getting the article out.
That of course starts people to think and also opine.
If you have any life experience at all... it is "relationships" that are most important in any dealings personal, business or even political. It is in the quality and level of that relationships that respect, trust and reliability are born. And ultimately it ends up in communication, coordination and cooperation that may develop into friendship and teamwork.
Right now, Xi, KIm, Moon, Putin and even Merkel are most probably envious of Abe's relationship with Trump.
One reason why Abe can go to many countries and be properly respected as Japan's representative. Are there any other Japanese political leader that can even come close to Abe..?
u_s__reamer
As long as Abe has something to offer, like trade with a major economic player, people will be eager to lend an ear. "Respect" and all the b*ttkissing is just the icing on the big Yen. Same goes for big$ Trump except he expects to be treated like an emperor (with no clothes).
Arrrgh-Type
"Substance" would imply that Trump needs to do "work" and "preparation" and learn "details" of complex matters. None of these are his strong suit, as we all know by now. Better to keep him distracted at the sumo tournament, he might do less damage that way.
1glenn
Dear Mr. Abe, please keep Trump in Japan. We are truly tired of him.
drlucifer
How and why are they envious.?

Just about all of them, I think.
