You know, as a veteran, when someone says to me 'Happy Memorial Day' or thanks me for my service on Memorial Day, I don't get angry. I know that if they are going to the trouble to say it to me, then it's pretty obvious that they just don't know any better. So I take a moment to explain the meaning of the holiday to them. I've never met anyone who didn't appreciate it.

Last year one of our GMs asked me to make a Memorial Day Facebook post graphic. He sent me a picture of a bunch of people at a barbecue with a message that read something along the lines of 'Have a great Memorial Day weekend!'. I told him I couldn't do that but I'd be happy to make something more appropriate. He came by and appreciated the explanation.

Not everyone really understands until they're told for the first time. Of all the nonsense that Trump says, this doesn't even rate to get me riled up.

I personally don't care if a President served or not as long as they respect the troops, which Trump seems to do for the most part. But people keep saying Obama's excuse was that he was not old enough for the draft. Well, I was born in the 70's and I still joined the Army... I'm just saying not everyone has to serve (although that might fix a lot of problems...) but 'not being old enough for the draft' is a dumb excuse.

What an absolute doofus. Though I have to say it's not nearly as bad as when visits disaster zones and says, "Have a great day!" and crap like that. He is absolutely clueless. It's another reason, too, why what Obama said is getting circulated as what a PROPER president would say, and why Trump will go on a hissy fit of tweets yet again.

You better die in USA army war and be celebrated very happily in a public holiday than survive and be ostracized.

Haters out in force disrespecting our Memorial Day.

nope just Trump , Trump is neither America or memorial day, he wouldnt know what sacrifice. Draft dodger and insulter of captured POWs

Yeah sure it has to be a “solemn day” so you can do your nonsense attack on Trump for saying Happy Memorial Day.

The activities done on this day in the USA tell a different story, that it is actually fine to have a “happy” Memorial Day enjoying the freedom those who died fought for.

I’m sure those BBQs were happy, the game was happy, people got some good deals on furniture and enjoyed the movie. So for one day you could knock off the attacks out of respect. But no.....

Anyway to all my fallen friends, I will never forget you. To all my brothers in arms, Happy Memorial Day.

And no, you don’t get to finally admit all that about Clinton now that he is of no value to your side politically anymore. We don’t trade like that. trump has done nothing wrong like that whereas Clinton did and you ignored it for 20 years when it was convenient to do so.

Linconman, thank you for your service. To which"real president" do you refer? By the way the speech was in a country that cost 161,000 servicem their lives.

Personal: where in the sandbox did you serve?

You too. I retired in 2006 and my certificate was signed by President Bush 2. I'm still OPSEC ingrained so I don't talk about where I served on open forums.

Yeah it’s such a “solemn” occasion that sporting events were held, stores held 50% off sales, people had BBQs and the new Will Smith movie came out. Just another reason to bash Trump over nothing.

Ridiculing Memorial Day - you have a lot in common with your President.

and as far as the troops, it was a work day in Japan when he spoke and they were proud to see him.

Today was a "Family Day" for many - except they didn't get to spend it with their families - they had to listen to the "Appeaser in Chief"...

You do know Obama nor Clinton served, right?

As I have said before, Clinton is a draft-dodging coward also. As was pointed out, Obama wasn't eligible for the draft.

Want to hear something that will upset your black and white tribal world, both Clinton and Trump are draft dodging cowards and perverts - Donnie and Billie - two of a kind....

Hey Blacklable,

In the United States on Memorial Day, we start every event with a solemn service or a moment of silence

Memorial day is the official beginning of summer, we BBQ, we run the Indie 500 and the Coca-Cola 600, we have baseball games.

Freedom, that's what these guys died for.

How many of you that are calling him a coward actually served?

West Point, Class of 2000. And in my opinion, Donald Trump is the largest disgrace to ever sit in the chair of the Oval Office, even greater than Tricky Dick Nixon. He's a coward, a megalomaniac, and a pathetic immature excuse for a human being who shouldn't be elected town dog catcher, let alone President of the United States. For all his false flattery and bullying puffery, he's a cowardly manchild who is psychologically unable to be an actual man.

I am a proud Vietnam vet, also did my part in Tikrit and Balad in Iraq. Lost a lot of friends and saw a lot of caskets loaded onto C-130s. This day is for them and the brave guys who lost their lives defending freedom, not you Trump haters that take any opportunity to slam this president.

How many of you that are calling him a coward actually served? My guess is not many.

27 years, and I spent my time in the sandbox. Thank goodness I have a retirement certificate signed by a real President, and not this draft-dodging Impostor.

He back-slaps Putin and exchanges love letters with Kim, who's regime killed 54K Americans who we celebrated and honored this past weekend.

I've never seen a President who is such an weak appeaser to our enemies...

Techall - no doubt you served your country with honour. Many of your fellow citizens would have appreciated that and the sacrifice of others.

And that is why rememberance days are solemn occasions. Loving or Hating or couldn't care less about Trump doesn't enter it. If there's one day of the year when a leaders words need to be above foolery, then these days would be it.

As I noted above, giving a "Happy Memorial Day" just suggests to me he's not writing on the line. He creates most of these situations by his own doing - mouth running ahead of his thoughts - giving ammunition for those willing to make a joke at his expense.

And while I have never called him a coward - I think - whether one has served or not has nought to do with it. All citizens can make informed comments about a leader based on facts. The factual details of his bonespur disability enabling him to avoid duty are well recorded, not some street rumour hearsay.

And funnily enough it's 3 years to the day when he sarcastically knocked Obama - who was in Japan for memorial day - saying to the effect "Did you bring up the Pearl Harbor sneak attack where 1,000s died when you met Abe?"

And yet this time around, the boots on the other foot, and not only doesn't he mention what he condemned Obama for not mentioning, he praises one of the world's psycho murdering tyrannts in Kim, knowing how much he is hated here in Japan.

No - Trump attracts derision like flies to carrion - all of his own doing.

At first I thought that it was just journalistic license when I read Happy Memorial Day.

But no - he did say that. Oh sure - he added on prayers etc, but I've never heard anyone - let alone the country's leader - address citizens with a "Happy................." on their day of remembrance.

Imagine the prime ministers of Aust/NZ saying "Happy Anzac Day" or the British PM saying "Happy Poppy Day" or in Japan the PM saying "Happy Hiroshima Day".

It's occasions like this when the Real Trump comes out - total blather.

@BeerGuy--that's the best theory. For all I know, there could be naval vessels named USS Dokken, Night Ranger, Damn Yankees and Cinderella on the high seas.

Haters out in force disrespecting our Memorial Day.

Our troops deserve better on Memorial Day than to have to "hurry up and wait", then listen to this draft-dodging coward, and appeaser of America's enemies...

Trump is a walking, mumbling, glowing orange sign of disrespect to our brave men and women in uniform...

If he thinks Putin is so great, and is "in love" with Kim, he can go live in their countries...and we can end this nightmare now...

USS Wasp is an interesting name for a ship. I could google it but I'll just assume it's named after the non-amphibious insect and not a person or old racial acronym.

It’s named after the 80’s hair metal band...

So says the draft dogger! What does he know about honor and service to a country?

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Definitely proud he is the President of the U. S. and glad he received a great welcome from our troops who are such a long way from home.

Thank you, Dear Leader.

Our republic endures because of brave men and women who are willing to lay down their lives to defend us all

Does that include those who were captured or do you still spit on them?

10 ( +11 / -1 )

A draft-dodging coward who shirked his duty to serve - he doesn't belong on the same stage as our brave men and women in uniform.

He cozies up to America's enemies - licking Putin's boots, siding with Kim the Killer who criticizes a fellow American...

A disgrace and an embarrassment...

Trump's presidency is based on the script of a movie rejected by Mel Brooks as being too implausibly goofy to be filmed.

5 ( +8 / -3 )

That's like saying "Happy anniversary of your father's death! Hope you enjoy it!" Numbnuts. He is a psychopath, with corresponding zero empathy or understanding.

8 ( +11 / -3 )

"Our republic endures because of brave men and women who are willing to lay down their lives to defend us all,"

which has helped make parasites like Trump and his family who've NEVER given anything to the country, only taken (think Trump bragging about not paying much in taxes, think about the Trump 'foundation', about his bonespurs preventing him from serving, having taxpayers finance his golf trips while his golf clubs profit, etc.) members rich.
