Of course he Will and there are good reasons for that. us steel is of strategic importance and for sure Nippon steel “ management” would just run it in the ground

I agree America needs to own its own steel manufacturing, Just as many in Japan would be against the sale of Nippon steel should a foreign company try to take it over. It is a national security issue especially with the world about get even more unstable than it already is.

What terrible M&A timing for Biden/Harris, almost like it was coordinated by team Trump!
Fighto!
The only way forward US Steel - which is on life-support - can survive, is to be essentially nationalised by the US government. Clearly US investors have not been interested in US Steel for many years, or they would have bought it.
The US government will have to tip in $ Billions and Billions to prop it up. They may well regret this decision.
HopeSpringsEternal
The deal makes financial sense if one can FULLY trust supply chains and partners, which is not so easy these days. Why Japan does not want to depend on others for their entire food supply, paying rice farmers huge $ etc.

Economists across USA America shake their heads collectively in confusion.
HopeSpringsEternal
If Nippon Steel had truly wanted this to go thru, would have pursued after the election under the Harris Admin. PA was the KEY state after all, and most voters didn't like it.
Issue damaged Biden/Harris to be sure, Trump WON the union vote, after losing it 70 to 30 to Biden in 2020, costing d's dearly. They lost a PA Senate seat to boot.

The next 4 years will be like this when trump is not golfing of course. It will be fun to see from Japan.

US Steel can not survive against the Chinese steel companies that dominate the market. Without a viable solution domestcally, allowing ownership by Nippon Steel is the only feasible solution on the table. If security is truly the only concern then US Steel should be owned and run by the US government itself.
At present some 2400 Japanese companies operate manufacturing facilities, with the auto makers alone having invested USD 57 Billion in the U.S..Over 931,900 Americans are directly employed by Japanese firms across all sectors, with more than half of these positions in manufacturing. Including indirect employment, such as jobs created through supply chains and subcontracting, Japanese companies support approximately 1.9 million jobs in the U.S. economy.
The Biden administration was against the US Steel/Nippon Steel deal as they wanted the Pennsylvania votes. Trump will remain against it until it becomes clear to him "what's in it for Trump?".
It is extremely unlikely that Nippon Steel Management will "run US Steel into the ground". There are only a few failures of Japanese investment in the U.S. market and the notable ones are tied directly to the failure of a U.S. business that they acquired. Such as Toshiba and Westinghouse, Sharp Corp and Recurrent Energy, and Nomura Holdings and Lehman Brothers. If anything, the risk for Nippon Steel is that US Steel will be a cause of failure.
US Steel should by all means be saved, but one should not be short-sighted or politically influenced in making such a crucial decision.
wallace
US Steel will go bankrupt with a total loss of jobs.
In 2021, 533,100 Americans were employed by Japanese manufacturers in the United States, which was the highest number ever recorded.

Trump is an insane lunatic. But he usually does what he says, which is why they say "when someone tells you who they are, listen". If they don't close the deal before the new year it's dead.
Some dude
I like how he had to write "Nippon steel of Japan", knowing very well that the morons who read Truth Social would have no idea what "Nippon" means.
HopeSpringsEternal
Trump's bringing back jobs and manufacturing to the US via tariffs and tax incentives. Tons of re-shoring in auto etc. Thus, US Steel business is set to take off like a SpaceX Starship!!!
HopeSpringsEternal
Note, Trump's a multi-billionaire for a reason, voters trust him to 'steward the economy' just like his first term, until the China virus hit and blew up the global economy.
JJE
Trump is right here. In an overcrowded market, someone's national producer has to go bust.
NS is buying out US steel to break its promises, asset strip them, ruthlessly sack their workers, pilfer their pensions and savings and ultimately get USS's market share, which is exactly what NS needs and nothing more. It'll be the economic equivalent of a death march for those poor workers.
The question is: should this be allowed to happen...

Trump uses humor and threats together to make his points clear. He is an experienced negotiator. The left doesn’t get it. Tariffs are a tool for negotiation. The problem for those he negotiates with is that he is unpredictable and they fear him.
Some dude
He is an experienced negotiator.
That photo of Putin and him in Helsinki tells a totally different story. Whatever went on in that room, and we may never know, Putin came out grinning like a cheshire cat.
Putin is an evil SOB and the sooner he dies the better, but one thing you can't call him is stupid. And when faced with an intellectual vacuum like Trump, he must have thought that Christmas had come early.

Much as it pains me to knock my own country, I'd bet that at least half of the people on Truth Social couldn't find Japan on a map.

Markets went up MUCH more under Trump Admin than Biden Admin and cumulative inflation approx. 3x times lower, so Biden's market returns should be discounted!
US Steel M&A issue has no real stock market impact, but a hugely adverse impact on Biden/Harris/d's!
HopeSpringsEternal
Elon Musk feels pretty good about his Trump support, campaigning in PA against this merger and I believe his gene pool to be quite above average!

The business of America is…. Business . That’s how you talk and DICTATE to a smaller vendor / partner who has been taking advantage of a prior corporations CEO. New Sheriff in town. Fix the issues Trump has laid out, and you’ll be his BFF. Fail or ignore them, tariffs are coming.
HopeSpringsEternal
NS has no leverage here and no real merit when taking into consideration national security. Suspect Trump Admin will strongly encourage them to set up a JV with USS if they truly wish to invest in the US.

Trump says he will block Nippon Steel takeover of US Steel. This is why we should all be glad Trump won, another 4 years of democrats and the entire country would be owned by foreign governments.
HopeSpringsEternal
Yrral, you believe everything you read? The markets are up because TRUMP won. In exist polling about 75% of Americans believed US was going in a bad direction.
This merger was one small reason Trump won and voters felt a new direction was badly needed, deal with it!
HopeSpringsEternal
The NYC scam hush money case will collapse soon on appeal, exactly like this NS failed merger, nuff said!

US Steel is dead then.
Peter Neil
it isn’t as if there aren’t steel companies in the u.s.
u.s. steel is small potatoes and has a market cap of $8 billion.
the top 3 steel companies above u.s. steel in the u.s. have a market cap of over $75 billion.
us production capacity doesn’t meet demand. 21% of steel consumption is from imports. anyone want to guess where the bulk of that comes from?
the new enemies and tariff targets, canada then mexico.
as car prices rise from tariffs, sales will fall even more than now, so steel demand will go down. steelworkers better get ready for layoffs.
another win for trumpenomics.

In his first term campaign, Trump promised to protect the West Virginia coal miners if they voted for him. They did. He didn't.
1glenn
And what if the deal is concluded before the Big Orange is inaugurated?
As for tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports, the US's two largest trading partners, one should notice that the US exports more to those two countries than it imports, so the loser in a tariff war will be the US.
N. Knight
They all pale into insignificance when compared to Nippon Steel.

that's the crazy part. you better sit down for this.
if the deal is closed then canceled by government edict, nippon steel still has to pay u.s. steel $440 million.
i'm not smart enough to understand the logic. maybe someone else can explain it?
Peter Neil
sorry, $400 million.
Jim
Sit back and watch the downfall of the American economy and American companies collapsing as soon as Trump starts to implement his irrational and irresponsible policies. The same independent voters who thought that Trump will help them with lowering the cost of living will be the ones who will start complaining and whining soon! Americans fail to realize that the prices of everything will never return to what they were a few years ago and are just imbeciles for thinking Trump will bring back those old prices. It’s never going to happen! The rich will keep getting richer, the middle class and low income earners will suffer hardship like never before and all the while Trump will make billions by accommodating all foreign delegations who visit The US for official purposes at his properties.
ZENJI
Obviously trump cannot make any $$$$ for himself from this deal.

Crazy how anything Trump decides on is instantly hated on by the leftists out there. He was in office before. Overall things were relatively positive and strong before the pandemic. One might think that maybe just maybe he can do something a little better than what we had during the last 4 years. Time to drop the tribalism and say “let’s just see what he can do” After all, there will be another election in 4 years if things go bad. Hard to think how it could be worse than Biden regime.
GBR48
Nationalist economics don't have to make economic sense and don't have to work. They are political. As per Brexit. It is all tribal now.
Nippon Steel politicised the deal with their timing. If they wanted market access they should have just bought shares in it to influence the board.
Maybe Japan buying a shedload more F35s will swing it. Who knows.
TaiwanIsNotChina

That's how it can be worse. He's considered it before and that was with him needing to win reelection and advisors who weren't completely bat guano.
Peter Neil
i think he will stop the steel deal, but will chicken out on the other sanctions, except china. he’ll call it a win and sell more merch.
he and his band of merry men can’t possibly be that stupid, can they?

Worse than the strongest economy of all time? Oh cause egg prices went up due to bird flu? He lowered gas prices to levels unseen since the 2000s? He actually invested in infrastructure? He helped struggling people make ends meet when corporations were bleeding them dry? Yeah, awful. I bet you hate feeding starving kids of poor people too.

US Steel is as important to the US as 7/11 is to Japan. Neither want a foreign takeover!
voiceofokinawa
US Steel symbolizes America's strength and power in everything American -- in matters concerned with military, economy, and you know what. So that it must be heart-breaking for the American to see the company be taken over by a foreign company.
It's quite understandable then for Trump to act as he does. The catch is whether or not his action will save the company and the labor.
Peter Neil
u.s. steel is more symbolic of how failure to invest in upgrading decades old technology and practices in a changing world creates industrial rot.
deanzaZZR
Code for higher profits for the company, management and stock holders and higher prices for USA consumers.

Nobody can save US steel. Within a few years that company will be bankrupted. How can America making weapons without steel ?
China is the world's strongest producer of high quality steel. I am very confident China can producing huge tonnage of steel for military purposes. We are winning as times go by !

Note, trump even bankrupt some casino, there are reason that he is a convicted felon.

Little Duce with his arrogance and narcissism is going to end up sinking the moribund steel industry in the US..
He will turn US into one more of his bankrupt companies

West Virgina voted 70% for Trump, apparently didn't do too bad by them, naturally US coal consumption and power generation dropping with nat. gas, but exports were SOLID under Trump. Voters trust Trump on economy, tariffs, re-shoring and block bad deals like NS!
Japan and Germany are busy adding coal fired power plants THIS YEAR, West Virginia is LOVING IT, but the global air quality, not so much!!!!

I can’t believe all the comments how many bust has TRump owned Sri the world????
How many countries dhas he had his hands financially in!??
From news media and his own plenty, and no one has complained about that.
Hes. is a hypocrite and the most unethical individual

The US voters like and trust Trump BECAUSE he's rich.
Truly dangerous politicians are ones that need money, like Biden or Clinton to name a few recent examples.
Scale of Biden family $influence peddling over decades is astonishing, dating back to 1970s, Hunter was a bit player, real power broker was Joe's younger brother.
Trump has no 'angle' with USS, as he can easily 'afford' to do the right thing by the US workers and economy etc.
