"The Izumo/Kaga classes were designed to carry in principle to ship the Bell-Boeing V-22 Osprey and the Boeing CH-47 Chinook. "

Oh yeah?

Explain the followung then, please.

Thank you.

"Japan’s new class of “helicopter destroyer” vessels have secretly been designed for fixed-wing aircraft takeoff and landing (STOVL) operations, allowing them to serve as aircraft carriers toting around fifth-generation F-35B aircraft, a retired Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force recently told Asahi Shimbun."

https://sputniknews.com/asia/201802271062052939-japan-secretly-designed-destroyer-f-35/

"a study conducted by the Izumo’s builder, Marine United Corporation (MUC), earlier this year concluded that warship, along with its sister ship, JS Kaga, can be turned into aircraft carriers. The carrier has reportedly been designed to operate STOVL fighter jets all along and requires only minor modifications to accommodate the F-35B. "

I still find it strange that the Izumo & Kaga are called destroyers when it is obvious they are Aircraft Capable Carriers - with the curent crop of Helicopters, Ospreys etc being carried are namely that - aircraft.

The Izumo/Kaga classes were designed to carry in principle to ship the Bell-Boeing V-22 Osprey and the Boeing CH-47 Chinook. That's why they're so big. Those ships were designed between 1997 and 2004. And at that time Japan was still not planning to have the F-35B. Simply because I didn't need them at that time.

Other terms are also used such as Flat Top Destroyer (flat top being a synonym for aircraft carrier) or simply Helicopter Carrier.

For legal reasons. Article 9 is a very difficult bureaucratic burden to change. That is why they change the name of the ships to friendlier names.

Modifications have also been carried out to allow their use by the F35B jets making them true aircraft carriers in every sense.

The maximum operational capability of an F-35B combat aircraft from these ships is 5 to 7 combat fighters. If you compare it with the Russian Admiral Kuznetsov it is 17 combat fighters. The Chinese Liaoning 37 combat fighters. And the U.S. are among 90 or more than 100 combat fighters. Calling it a real aircraft carrier is a bad joke. It will only be a small carrier. Nothing more.

In addition the Kaga has been named after the original WW2 Kaga - an Aircraft Carrier.

Japan can name its ships by whatever name it wants. In this case following the name of old historical jurisdictional provinces.

So why not call them what they are?

There can only be one reason - Article 9 bans the use of offensive weapons and there is global consensus that aircraft carriers are offensive weapons, so just call it something else.

Bit like the Aircraft Carrier you're having, when you're not having an Aircraft Carrier.

You have to be aware that article 9 of his constitution is too obsolete. Written in 1947 and with the technological and geo-political parameters of that time. Nothing to do with the present time. And changing that article is very difficult because there is strong opposition in the Chamber of the National Diet. Many opposition parties to the government have not yet accepted the obsolescence of that article. And until they realize it. There will be no possible change to make that article more flexible that would allow Japan to have greater military autonomy.

One more note. Article 9 prohibits Japan from having any type of weapon. Not just offensives. JSDF should not exist. Literally. And as I said above. A small aircraft carrier of 5 to 7 combat fighters. There is nothing offensive about it. And it fits perfectly within the exclusively defensive capabilities. Like the Italian Cavour (C 550) or the Spanish Juan Carlos I (L-61).

The Kaga, a fast ship going in harms way. Soon, very soon, Japan will ships that make the Kaga look like boats.

Interesting to note that Trump and the US Navy have no problem with the Rising Sun flag unlike the Koreans.

Mr President, as a fellow American, I have some small advice and suggestions for your upcoming visit, just so it goes smoothly....

1) Don't grab the Empress by the ___

2) Don't say that the Emperor's father was born in Germany...

3) Don't say the capitol of Japan is Beijing...

4) Don't suggest to Abe to build "a Wall" to keep the North Koreans from invading...

5) Don't say how proud you are of losing $1 Billion...

6) Don't say you're "in love" with Kim Jong Un - even if it's true...

7) And never, never utter the phrase; "Mark my words, mark my words"...

The "Art of Losing $1 Billion" author is visiting - I'm sure the Japanese are thrilled.

It was The Art of the Comeback. He recovered from his losses and against all odds got elected president, lincolnman. Tee hee!

Or as many believe he was funded directly by overseas meagalithic banks such as Deutsche Bank ( to the tune of $Billions) or Russian Inc corporations.

Quote : Eric Trump 2014 (well before Eyes Too Big for the Head Prez days) -

"We have all the funding we need out of Russia................. "We've got some guys that really, really love golf, and they're really invested in our programs. We just go there all the time."

So recovering from losses is not such an uphill battle if the Global Monetary Swamp is your playground.

BeerDeliveryGuy,

Of course, the Air Force One has been and will always remain so named in the future. There's little possibility it might be called the Enola Gay.

But that's not a moot point here. The point at issue is how people may feel when they come across remnants of the old enmity of the past

Business losses back during the Reagan admin and he wrote about it. It was the talk of the news 30 years ago and now it's news? How about this, Hillary lost upwards of $768 million (from Washington Post) in one year and lost, so a billion over a decade is still a better rate.

How about you get your facts straight - the $1 Billion was lost during the period 1985 to 94 - Reagan was President during only three of those. He's as incompetent as a businessman as he is a President - what a loser...

Don't embarrass the US Donnie!

As we have discussed here before, the classification of these ships is clumsy, but they are destroyers in the sense of helicopter/Osprey-based ‘submarine destroyers’.

Their secondary, or longer-term and even possibly primary function, is with a subsequently strengthened deck to host vertical/short take-off and landing F-35Bs.

A pun conjured up by Yubaru's take on this story: "Eek, 'Kaga' desu ka?"

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Goodluck, there are two separate orders here. 100 of the more capable F-35A version for longer-runway land-based operations.

The F-35B version is a separate order STOL for less-capable operations from shorter flight decks at sea.

Fun fact. There is a difference between an aircraft being given a name and its actual call sign. Air Force One is the call sign given to any fixed wing aircraft that the US president is fly on at the time, regardless of that aircraft's name, ie "Enola Gay" or "maidens delight" etc etc. If the US president was flying in a Cessna light plane its call sign would be "Air force One" for the duration.

The same "tour" could have been held on the Kaga's sister ship, the Izumo. Seeing as how neither Trump nor Abe care much for protocol or political niceties, it doesnt matter.

The name is part of JMSDF and Japan's history and we have to deal with it.  There are many US warships named for victories and defeats that have made similar visits.  What about the USS BATAAN, named after the defeat in the Philippines and the forced march of US and Filipino troops to prison camps, or the USS CHOSIN, and I could go on and on.

The fact that he is visiting a JMSDF ship is a good thing and should be seen as that.

We need helicopters not planes.

Actually Osprey, not helicopters!

Interesting how another article here said our military will purchase the cheaper F-35A, now it is the more expensive F-35B in this article. We need helicopters not planes.

Warship names are generally recycled to new warships of the same or similar class.

The irony is in the name of the ship, whose forefather was a part of the destruction of Pearl Harbor.

Is that before or after the election? Ah, just before. OK.

Air Force One is, always has, and always will be named “Air Force One.”

9 ( +10 / -1 )

BeefDelivery Guy,

What you say may be right -- warships' names are usually recycled, but suppose the Air Force One that will carry Trump to Tokyo was named the Enola Gay, what would the Japanese people feel about it?

Many Naval ships have geographical names, as US battleships did. The JMSDF Kaga is named after the province of Kaga 加賀, now Ishikara Prefecture) as was the IJNS Kaga of WWII. Really don't see anything "ironic" about it.

Ironic that Trump will tour a Japanese carrier named the "Kaga", the namesake of an aircraft carrier of the same name, that participated in the Pearl Harbor bombing and other actions as well, during WWII.

It also was sunk at the Battle of Midway!
