And the Emperor can give him a tour of the big walls and moat surrounding his palace.

Nothing like selling out the thing held most sacred in your culture.

...try to remove him from office just because you don’t like him.

I thought there were plenty of other reasons for people to be talking about impeachment, criminal proceedings and possible jail time.

13 ( +15 / -2 )

I can just imagine the headlines:

Emperor with no clothes meets the new Japanese emperor.

PS Will Abe be rolling down more bunkers this time?!

13 ( +14 / -1 )

this has to be killing Trump hating anti-USA liberals on this site to hear this

Not killing me at all. I simply feel pity for the Japanese, being held hostage to the whims of their brown-nosing Trumpophile for a PM. I don't blame DT for this. It's all on Abe and his fellow right wingers.

And BTW, hating Trump doesn't make us any more anti-US than does the hatred you and yours felt for Obama or Clinton et al. It's called democracy. We owe no one fealty.

“The United States is the most important country for Japan. Mr Trump is the most suitable (foreign guest) to meet the new emperor first," one of the sources said.”

this has to be killing Trump hating anti-USA liberals on this site to hear this.

Why would you think that, when the source is probably one of the mouthpieces of a prime minister who has shown himself to be brazenly sycophantic towards Donald Trump? Right-wing Japanese politicians grovelling towards right-wing US governments is just to be expected.

Not at all, but like others said, its unfortunate for the Japanese.

...try to remove him from office just because you don’t like him.

Democrats want to remove him from office if he is found guilty of a number of crimes, including treason. Not simply because he's unpopular.

At least most Asian countries are respectful to our President

Lol, you kidding? You mean Japan, only, right? NK and China are playing games with him and south east Asia has been knocking him since before he was elected.

Melania looks loke she's dressed for a funeral......Does she know something about Trump's future as POTUS that we don't?

10 ( +12 / -2 )

Abe and Trump, both of whom are avid golfers, may also head on to the fairways again, as they did on the sidelines of bilateral summits held in the United States and Japan.

This should be the headline.

Like Trump cares about the Emperor ! He's barely able to pronounce "Kim Jong Un", so "Emperor Naruhito" is mission impossible for him.

10 ( +10 / -0 )

Abe just can't get enough of kissing Trump's butt, can he?

10 ( +12 / -2 )

And I would not worry about protocol issues. Imperial Household (and PM Abe ) will advise Trump exactly what to do.

I'm sure he was told what to do regarding protocol when he went to the UK too, didn't stop him turning up late to meet the Queen and then prancing around in front of her like an out-of-control corgi.

I pity poor Naruhito, he's taking on a lousy job that involves having to be nice to all kinds of riff-raff.

10 ( +10 / -0 )

"this has to be killing Trump hating anti-USA liberals on this site to hear this."

Actually I'm looking forward to seeing Abe invent new ways of making his nose get even more brown.

Melania looks loke she's dressed for a funeral...she's just grieving for herself. Another new American doing a job nobody wants to do.

How will he bow to the Emperor?

He needs to learn that first or probably need some extensive training.

7 ( +12 / -5 )

Trump's briefing on his talks with Kim will be a litany of what Trump gave up forbthd photo op. Trump is completely ineffective on this issue.

How will he bow to the Emperor?

He needs to learn that first or probably need some extensive training.

Political etiquette says world leaders do not bow. If he does bow, he screwed up.

The emperor is not a "world leader." He holds no political position in Japan. The heads of government of other nations can choose to bow to him observing Japanese custom or not.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

A nominated Nobel being first to meet the Emperor, Abe just Looooves his hamburger, golf buddy. Hardly a cracking start for the new Emperor, hope he feels poorly and avoids what his handlers have forced on him. Perhaps step down as there is a precedent and live an uncontrolled life?

6 ( +10 / -4 )

While I can not see Trump bowing to the Emperor I can see him putting his foot into his mouth and saying something appropriately stupid!

Oh and to those who have obviously forgotten, Obama did an almost 90 degree bow to the current Emperor!

Nothing like selling out the thing held most sacred in your culture.

Hell, he's sold the whole country to his cronies, what does he care about the emperor? in Abe's mind, Nippon Kaigi is the thing held most sacred in his culture.

How will he bow to the Emperor?

Probably spit in his hand and extend it with a "put er there Emp!"

A nominated Nobel being first to meet the Emperor, Abe just Looooves his hamburger, golf buddy.

I'm sure Trump's butt has been permanently imprinted with Abe's face. Jeez- not even dogs roll over and faun over their masters as much as this PM has over this president.

Hardly a cracking start for the new Emperor, hope he feels poorly and avoids what his handlers have forced on him. Perhaps step down as there is a precedent and live an uncontrolled life?

I wish that for him. He is a political prisoner of the establishment that seeks to advance their own agenda with his legitimacy. This has been going on since the Edo period with the Tokugawa shogunate.

I will be waiting for the motorcade with my quick-release belt on, so that I can salute this preposterous clown with a full-blooded, double-cheeked Saxon Salute.

Truly curious... what is so special about the incoming Emperor that he should be held in such high regard? Can anybody tell me?

Nothing, but he's not held in particularly high regard. He will probably be shown the respect and deference generally due to a head of state, and one day he might be held in high regard if he carries on like his father has.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Golf, thanks abe for the peace prize, thanks for sending jP troops to Venezuela (but you still have to pay for the oil), and a quick handshake photo of the emperor outside his departing helicopter.

"this has to be killing Trump hating anti-USA liberals on this site"

No, just people with taste and manners

Liberals hating Trump, jeez, he's blown the deficit out, turned our farmers into welfare princes and emboldened Russia, the guy is a liberal.

3 ( +7 / -4 )

How about saying no?

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Truly curious... what is so special about the incoming Emperor that he should be held in such high regard?

Maybe because he's the Emperor? I mean, what more do you want?

2 ( +4 / -2 )

He has the monecome Emperor, but King is more appropriate. An emperor controls many and vast lands a King his own. The Japanese version controls nothing can't even retire so the designated Emperor status might be a to soften the blow.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

How will he bow to the Emperor?

I think that Prince Phillip had the right idea at Hirohito's funeral.

He did not actually bow, but give a respect full nod.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

@Derek Grebe, here in Canada we call that a 'full moon', and with several participants, a 'lunar cluster'. If I was in Japan during his visit, I'd join you. But I'll be in Russia, doing it to Putin.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

i expected someone like a King/Queen, like Felipe of Spain, Karl Gustav of Sweden, Rama X (King of Thailand), Philippe of Belgium, King Of Netherlands... but Trump _

1 ( +1 / -0 )

"The United States is the most important country for Japan. Mr Trump is the most suitable (foreign guest) to meet the new emperor first."

What an honor!

It's eat your heart out and gnash your teeth time for bitterness of what could have been, eh.

He will already be in JAIL by then.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

@Bintaro

Like Trump cares about the Emperor ! He's barely able to pronounce "Kim Jong Un", so "Emperor Naruhito" is mission impossible for him.

I didn’t know people address an emperor by using his given name.

Cricky:

He is sovereign over not just the yamato, but the ainu and the ryuukyuu. That's why I think its called emperor. Either way, its an English rendition of tennou. Just like we could say sultan, kung or king for another ruler, although sultan Gustav (Swedish king) gives it a different feel than king or kung.

What Simon says! (Foston)...ha!

Reagan's 5 successors are pale imitations.

Japan should send out the apple pen guy. Trump won't know the difference.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

So sad in so many ways. Unless you buy into it. What sould I do? Follow a leader down the path of destruction or wander off and be ridiculed for not being a follower? World leaders are a pathetic source of the worlds problems.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

So Mr. T. will be golfing rather than talking security, royalty flattering aside?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

This brown nose poodle who calls himself the Japanese PM will nominate Trump as Japanese Emperor. The Japanese people need to start exerting their people power before Abe makes Japan the 52nd State of the US ( Australia is already the 51st State}.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Considering what happened the last time Trump visited the Queen of Great Britain, this has all the ingredients of a major mess in the making. That president has no respect whatsoever towards the protocols in place, and he thinks he's better than anyone else.

If the new emperor wants to be serious about his early days on the job, he should order to shut the entrance gate to the Imperial Palace if Trump is late once again.

Brilliant idea! In case anyone has forgotten

Nippon Kaigi is the thing held most sacred in his culture.

Indeed, and the Nippon Kaigi is full of ancient treasures. Its head is 86. I'm 72. If I joined, I could only qualify for their youth brigade.

A foreign national in Kyoto told has written about being a member. He said they welcome foreigners. Based on the Nippon Kaigi members I've met including the Big Cheese himself, I'd describe them as the Japanese version of Reagan Republicans with Phillis Schlafly on the female side.

Start as you mean to go on I guess, poor bloke. Really is being passed a heavy Barton from his father but his dad sure as hell deserves to retire. Really hope he enjoys the rest of his days.

Just a note of advancement , will it not better for the New Emperor to have the visit of the China's President instead of Trump from a human point of view and politics of Asia ???. Looking at Trump law suits in America and on Trump attitude towards Asian countries ???.

Wel-come

I'm excited Pope Francis is coming in November and will make the long trek to Nagasaki to see him! I'm excited president Trump is coming to Japan in May! My wife will be so disgusted that all the Japanese channels are showing this clown, I'll get to watch NCIS on Fox Japan all day!

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Ronald Reagan could do it with style and grace...

I didn't forget, but I didn't want to be the one who turned this into a 'Trump vs Obama' moment... ;-)

But if Trump does it too, I'll give him as much criticism as I did Obama. A screw up is a screw up.

-8 ( +2 / -10 )

The emperor is not a "world leader." He holds no political position in Japan. The heads of government of other nations can choose to bow to him observing Japanese custom or not.

Symbolic or not, he is still considered the 'head of state'.

Regardless of that, Trump is a world leader and should not bow. He can choose to, but he would be choosing wrong.

-8 ( +1 / -9 )

Gawd, what a bunch of whiners in the comments here, lol

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's government is apparently seeking to demonstrate the strong Japan-U.S. alliance by offering Trump its highest-ranking visit following Japan's imperial accession on May 1.

So is Abe going to have Trump meet with AKB48?

-8 ( +0 / -8 )

How will he bow to the Emperor?

He needs to learn that first or probably need some extensive training.

Political etiquette says world leaders do not bow. If he does bow, he screwed up.

Sorry I was brought up that you don’t hate your elected president and try to remove him from office just because you don’t like him.

-12 ( +3 / -15 )

At least most Asian countries are respectful to our President. Look forward to seeing the president on his trip here.

-12 ( +2 / -14 )

Its an Honor for the American people. The Friendship between the two nations is great. But remember, the President of the United States bows to no man, but Jesus the Christ.

-13 ( +1 / -14 )

Really wise choice by the Abe Cabinet. As USA is Japan's number one ally, partner and friend, it is right Trump has the honor of being first to meet the New Emperor. And I would not worry about protocol issues. Imperial Household (and PM Abe ) will advise Trump exactly what to do. I am excited about May and all the parties coming up!!
