Who is the US tell other countries what to do? Oh, I forgot, they are ones with the biggest guns and will always use them, everywhere, when comes to protecting freedom and democracy....

Under the law, banks in countries that buy oil from Iran can be cut off from the U.S. financial system unless their purchases decline.

It's probably a stupid question, but why don't they buy oil in other currencies?

I think it's not totally the currency issue, it's the US banks that have control over the world financial system. Russia and China are trying to fix all that.

Not a stupid question at all. Gaddafi was planning on trading oil in a gold-backed currency. You see where that got him. Iran was planning to trade in a currency other than the USD and we see that it is now in the gun sights of the US. American foreign policy is based on the petro dollar and the US military. Challenge that at your own risk, although China is probably buying oil from Iran with the Yuan.

The whole World is laughing at them........They fight desert tribes of ME in a proportion 100 : 1 backed by their NATO servants.

This is a US face saving measure. These countries (including Japan, US's great friend) already said they would not obey the US in its squabble with Iran, so to save face, the US granted "waivers" or "exemptions". Yeah, like the US is going to tell China what to do! That is a big HA, HA, HA!!! US is digging its own grave. Why is it that the only thing the US knows now is the stick? What happened to the carrot?

Guess what? Time to scrap USD....a currency which is not good enough even for its own citizen nowadays!! US has spilled more voilence in these hundred years than any other country on this whole planet. I do everything but u guys are not allowed....gimme a break

It is so pathetic... yes, yes, we want sanctions on Iran, but uhhh.... we´d like to buy oil from the mullahs.

Now you come to mention it, I seem to remember reading that Hussein committed the cardinal sin of going over to Euro to sell his oil, Bush, or rather the guys who pulled Bush's strings didn't like this and the Iraq "war" started.

Of course, it would be too much to expect good-boy-sit-lie-down-beg Japan to do something like this.

The US knows very well that it is financially totally finished once it allows, that oil can be paid for in any other currency than the $$$. For this they are of course willing to do whatever is necessary. Most certainly another war has never been, nor will it ever be a problem. Messrs Saddam, Gaddafi and soon Ahmedijad are ample proof of that.

What's the point of having these sanctions if everyone is waived from them?

Sanctions are imposed by those powerful enough to so. They are used against countries like Iran, when the danger they pose for the ECONOMIC reality of the US, becomes too great.

Ahmedinejad threatens to stop selling Oil against $$$$. A mistake that Saddam and Gaddafi have made before him. If sanctions do not work, usually a war follows.

If some nations want exceptions from the sanctions, then the US needs calculate the essential, which is financial support in the coming war, as the US is going bancrupt. No one wants sanctions to succeed. Israel will not accept anything else than a war.

It is that simple....
